Douro Countryside Hike - Vineyards Hiking across the Douro Valley Hike The Douro River (Duero) is a river that rises on the peaks of the Serra de Urbión, in the Spanish province of Soria, at 2160 meters, and crosses northern Portugal until its mouth near the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. It is the third longest river in the Iberian peninsula. It has 897 km in length, 572 km in Spanish soil, 213 km navigable in Portuguese territory and 112 km of international character, because its course is borderline. This last section, in which the river squeezes and its bed deepens, is known as the cliffs. Its banks were protected with the creation of the Douro Internacional natural parks in Portugal and Arribas do Douro in Spain. On 14 December 2001, UNESCO included the Alto Douro Wine Region in the list of World Heritage Sites in the cultural landscape category. Our Guide will pick you up at Porto town. Make yourself comfortable in the car while driving to the one of the oldest wine denomination area's of the world, the amazing Upper Douro Valley. On the way you have the opportunity to see the beautiful Marão and Mon- temuro Mountain Range that act as barriers of wet currents coming from the Atlantic Ocean being responsible for the cold winters and hot and dry summer days at the Douro Valley. Peso da Régua. Until the last century Peso da Régua city was where barrels would be loaded onto wooden boats known as Rabelos and shipped down to Vila Nova de Gaia at the mouth of the Douro river. And this is also the base of the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the Douro DOC, regulated since 1756. On this beautiful place we started our hike through the countryside across the vineyards. The itinerary At the beginning of the hike you will pass the river through the old railway bridge built in 1934 that would link the pas- sage to the city of Lamego but was not completed being turned into a pedestrian bridge. On the way you have the chance to see the city of Régua, its walkways along the Douro River and touristic and traditional Rabelo boats go- ing upper river. After passing the bridge we follow the path along the river Varosa (that flows into the Douro River) where you can extend its banks until you reach the dam with the same name. Along the way you will have the opportunity to see wild blackberries, vegetable gardens, beautiful flowers, olive and almond trees that beautify our passage. At the end of the trail you will walk through the vineyards where you will find small clusters of country houses that give you access to the private grounds of Quinta da Pacheca where you will have a chance to visit and taste their magnificent wines accompanied by a stunning picnic with traditional local food.
