NAN N Ü Keith McMahonNan Nü 15-2/ Nan (2013) Nü 15 179-218(2013) 179-218 www.brill.com/nanu179 ISSN 1387-6805 (print version) ISSN 1568-5268 (online version) NANU Women Rulers in Imperial China Keith McMahon (University of Kansas) [email protected] Abstract “Women Rulers in Imperial China”is about the history and characteristics of rule by women in China from the Han dynasty to the Qing, especially focusing on the Tang dynasty ruler Wu Zetian (625-705) and the Song dynasty Empress Liu. The usual reason that allowed a woman to rule was the illness, incapacity, or death of her emperor-husband and the extreme youth of his son the successor. In such situations, the precedent was for a woman to govern temporarily as regent and, when the heir apparent became old enough, hand power to him. But many women ruled without being recognized as regent, and many did not hand power to the son once he was old enough, or even if they did, still continued to exert power. In the most extreme case, Wu Zetian declared herself emperor of her own dynasty. She was the climax of the long history of women rulers. Women after her avoided being compared to her but retained many of her methods of legitimization, such as the patronage of art and religion, the use of cosmic titles and vocabulary, and occasional gestures of impersonating a male emperor. When women ruled, it was an in-between time when notions and language about something that was not supposed to be nevertheless took shape and tested the limits of what could be made acceptable.

  • The Role of Japan in Modern Chinese Art Edited by Joshua A
The Role of Japan in Modern Chinese Art Edited by Joshua A. Fogel Published in association with the University of California Press “This ambitious, very important project defines no less than a new field of inquiry, one that scarcely could have been attempted in the past. The essays in this volume add enor- mously to the documentation of what late-period Chinese art learned from Japan, and begin to formulate conclu- sions that will enrich future accounts of both Japanese and Chinese art.” JAMES CAHILL, University of California, Berkeley The modern histories of China and Japan are inexorably intertwined. Their relationship is perhaps most obvious in the fields of political, economic, and military history, but it is no less true in cultural and art history. Yet the traffic in artistic practices and practitioners between China and Japan remains an understudied field. In this volume, an international group of scholars investigates Japan’s impact on Chinese art from the mid-nineteenth cen- tury through the 1930s. Individual essays address a range of perspectives, including the work of individual Chinese and Japanese painters, calligraphers, and sculptors, as well as artistic associations, international exhibitions, the collotype production or artwork, and the emergence of a modern canon. JOSHUA A. FOGEL is Canada Research Chair and a professor of history at York University, Toron - to, and a specialist in the history of cultural and political ties between China and Japan in the mod - ern era. Painting the Formless and Strumming the Soundless: Yang Xiong’s Taixuan jing as Expression of the Absolute Jennifer Liu A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2019 Reading Committee: David R. Knechtges, Chair Ping Wang Olga Levaniouk Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Asian Languages and Literature © Copyright 2019 Jennifer Liu University of Washington ABSTRACT Painting the Formless and Strumming the Soundless: Yang Xiong’s Taixuan jing as Expression of the Absolute Jennifer Liu Chair of the Supervisory Committee: David R. Knechtges Department of Asian Languages and Literature This dissertation is a study of Yang Xiong’s (53 BCE–18 CE) Taixuan jing that attempts to incorporate philological methods with philosophical insights by situating the text within the intellectual and historical context of the late Eastern Han. Secondarily, it is a response to the modern suggestion that the Taixuan jing paved the way for Wei-Jin xuanxue movement, and thus seeks to probe the limits of the extent of this claim with an investigation into Yang Xiong’s mentor Zhuang Zun (83 BCE–ca. 6 CE) and the Jingzhou school established under the auspices of Liu Biao (144-208). While most studies have taken the Taixuan jing as an imitation of the Zhou yi, I have argued that if we are to truly understand Yang Xiong’s project we must break free of this preconception and look at it in its own right. That is, the Taixuan is not merely an imitation i of the Zhou yi, but that of a higher, transcendental truth which I have called the “absolute” that is expressed through image, parallel prose, and verse.

  • Chapter One Wang Bi
WANG BI: A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH 9 hapter ne C O Wang Bi A Biographical Sketch Wang Bi’s Life Martin Heidegger is said to have reacted to a request by students to provide some introduction to Aristotle’s life by starting his next lecture with the words: “Aristotle was born, worked, and died.” He then continued to hold forth on the philosopher’s philosophy. Heidegger’s attitude talks back to a fashion of reducing intellec- tual to social history and philosophical pursuits to high-register articulations of particular economic, political, or personal interests. This fashion corresponds to some commonly held assumptions about the nature of man, but it still has to prove the particular ways in which social interests might translate into particular philosophical or religious constructs; and it also has to account for the fact that often these constructs survive the demise of the social group whose interests they once seemed to advocate, and exert a profound influ- ence on later generations with a completely different “social inter- est” and agenda. In some of my previously published studies on Wang Bi I was less disturbed by such reductionism. But in the end the link could neither be verified nor falsified, while the fact re- mained that Wang Bi remained a valid intellectual force for many 9 CRA1 9 11/3/99, 2:20 PM 10 THE CRAFT OF A CHINESE COMMENTATOR centuries to come, and this under substantially changed circum- stances. Heidegger’s implied argument that in a philosopher only his philosophy counts has a point. It counters an old and widespread tendency to evade the challenge of a philosopher’s thought by reduc- ing it to “school” tenets, political affiliation, or legitimation of the socioeconomic interests of the class or segment to which he is thought to belong.
