Tuition jumps 5.9 percent By ETHAN HAYWARD Assistant News Editor Tuition and Fees 1991-95 Notre Dame’s Board of Trustees has approved a 5.9 room and board percent increase in tuition and room and board, raising com t u i t i o n bined costs for the 1995-96 academic year to $22,340. The cost of tuition now stands at a record $17,830 while room 17,830 and board costs up to $4,510. • Film Music: History and Function from 1930 to Present
Film Music: History and Function from 1930 to Present Units: 4 Term—Day—Time: Fall 2020—Tuesdays and Thursdays—4:00–5:50pm (Pacific Time) Location: ONLINE Instructor: Tim Greiving Office: Virtual Office Hours: Virtually anytime Contact Info: [email protected] Course Description Music is the soul of film. Film scores can animate, enhance, pump blood into, subvert, and often transcend their movie. This underlooked, underappreciated art form is almost 100 years old—still an infant compared to its predecessors like opera, ballet, and theatre music, but old enough to have a rich, fascinating history worth exploring. In this course we’ll take a trip through that history, at times skimming along the surface, at times diving deep. With the aid of film clips, live watch parties, and the occasional special guest, you’ll gain a solid knowledge of and appreciation for the most-heard, least-noticed art form of the past century. (Because we’re cramming one hundred years of history into a single—shortened!—semester, we’ll primarily focus on Hollywood film music, although a few classes will be devoted to international films and composers. We’ll also limit our study to feature films, without spending time on television or videogame music.) Recommended Reading • King Kong chapter from Music by Max Steiner, by Steven. C. Smith (Blackboard / Content) • “The sound of movie music,” New York Times, March 28, 1976 • “Underscoring Richard Wagner's influence on film music,” L.A. • Rap Vs. Hip Hop
Chris L. Terry’s debut novel Zero Fade was on Best of 2013 lists by Kirkus Reviews and Slate.com, and shortlisted for the American Library Association’s Best Fiction for Young Adults. He lives in Los Angeles, and has contributed to Razorcake since 2006. Born in East L.A., like every good Mexican boy, Art was raised in the Imperial Valley of California, where he was bathed in cartoon and monster movie glory from both sides of the border. He began scribbling at a young age and later found out he could get paid meager wages to do artwork and illustration. He currently lives in Orange County CA and spends his time spilling ink on his drawing board and trying to sell his paintings. One Punk’s Guide is a series of articles where Razorcake contributors share their love for a topic that is not traditionally considered punk. Previous Guides have explored everything from pinball, to African politics, to outlaw country music. Razorcake is a bi-monthly, Los Angeles-based fanzine that provides consistent coverage of do-it-yourself punk culture. We believe in positive, progressive, community-friendly DIY punk, and are the only bona fide 501(c)(3) non-profit music magazine in America. We do our part. One Punk’s Guide to Rap Music originally appeared in Razorcake #96, February/March 2017. Original article layout by Todd Taylor. Adapted to zine by Matthew Hart. Printing courtesy of Razoracake Press, Razorcake.org This zine is made possible in part by grants from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, is supported by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles Arts Commission, and funded by the California Arts Council, a state agency.

All rights reserved. Getting Hip to the Hop: A Rap Bibliography/Discography Leta Hendricks ABSTRACT. This bibliographic/discographic essay examines works which may be used to develop a core collection on Rap music. A selected bibliography and discography is also provided. INTRODUCTION Research interest has recently emerged in the popular African-American musical idiom known as Rap and continues to grow as social and cultural scholars have embarked on a serious study of Rap music and culture. Therefore, the student, scholar, and general library patron may seek information on Rap and its relationship with the African-American community. During the 1970's, libraries rushed to include in their holdings culturally diverse materials, especially materials on African-American history, literature, and culture. Today, emphasis is placed on cultural diversity, Rap is sometimes deemed to be low art and may be overlooked in the collecting of diverse materials. However, Rap has already celebrated its sixteenth anniversary and, like Rock and Roll, Rap is here to stay. Rap music research is difficult because (1) the librarian or information provider generally lacks knowledge of the category,' and (2) primary/ephemeral materials are not widely accessible.2 This selective bibliographic and discographic essay examines a variety of Rap resources and materials including biographies, criticisms, discographies, histories, recordings, and serials to help fill the Rap knowledge and culture gap and assist in the development of a core collection on Rap music.
