Their commitment to their local area is huge. In term time they turn out every week day from Monday to Friday in all weathers. They may be sweltering in high temperatures under those incredible cagoule overgarments. They may be freezing in icy conditions during the winter. No matter what, they turn up morning and mid afternoon. No time to go out for the day midweek. Instead they are committed to providing a service to their local community. September is the month when they begin their important work again. As a new academic year begins this is a good time to give fresh thanks for the people who make our lives easier for us. I have mentioned one important group who help School age children and their families. Whatever age you are there will be people who are helping you, sometimes when you do not realise they are doing so. As I work with churchwardens, PCC members including secretaries and treasurers, retired clergy alongside authorised lay readers and other lay people doing a wide range of things, such as editing this magazine, I am constantly amazed by how much they are doing-to make things work in these parishes. We must say thank you and help them whenever we can. For Church community to thrive there must be and there is a team effort. As a billboard outside a Yorkshire church once said “Carpenter needs joiners”. Thanks to everyone who participates in our church life. Your work, seen or unseen, is much appreciated. And also new joiners are always welcome! This year we were fortunate to welcome Sheila Wareing our newly appointed Diocesan President as our guest; The event began with coffee at 10-30am; Sheila then went on to talk to us about MULOA-the global initiative which is taking place throughout Mothers Union worldwide; MULOA stands for MOTHERS UNION, LISTENING, OBSERVING, and ACTING, and is the name used to explore the essence of what it is to be Mothers Union Who are we as Mothers union? Whose lives could/should we be touching? What differences could/should we be making in people’s lives? How do we most effectively make that difference? We then studied three bible passages and related them to Mother’s Union today; We ended our morning session with Communion before sharing a lovely lunch; Our Bring and Buy Stall raised over £100 for KERNOW YOUNG CARERS Our Diocesan project and we took the opportunity to stock up on MU items from the MU Enterprise stall; Before she left Sheila was presented with a bunch of sweet peas; It is always a pleasure to meet with members from other branches; The event was a great success and a time for reflection in a very pleasant, spiritual place ; Rev Dorothy 10 CROSSWORD Answers Page 32 Across 1 Animal ridden by Rebekah in Genesis ch. 24 (5) 4 The idol in Exodus ch. 32 was shaped like this animal (4) 8 Like the account written for Theophilus in Luke ch. 1 (7) 9 Parish priest (5) 10 I will send fire upon the _____ of Hazael (Am 1.4) (5) 11 Playhouse (American spelling) (7) 13 British persons (N Am slang) (6) 15 Parson (6) 17 Contravenes the sixth commandment (7) 20 Person in charge of an abbey (5) 22 ..the measuring line of _____ (Isa 34.11) (5) 23 Person in 1 Sam ch. 25 who sounds like a large beer (7) 24 Ten-stringed instrument in Psalm 33 (4) 25 Slang word for medals (5) Down 1 Hazael took a thick one in 2 Kings ch. 8 (5) 2 June 24th (9,3) 3 Crime contrary to the eighth commandment (7) 4 Underground chapel (5) 5 Morning reception of visitors (5) 6 Person incapable of sustained attention (12) 7 Resting place of Noah's ark (6) 12 Jacob's was wrenched in Genesis ch. 32 (3) 13 Father of Noah in Luke ch. 3 (6) 14 Word of respect prefixed to the name of a knight (3) 16 ..devote yourself to the public _______ of Scripture (1 Ti 4.13) (7) 18 Written composition (5) 19 Moses made a bronze one in Numbers ch. 21 (5) 21 Stories told by old wives in 1 Timothy ch. 4 (5) 11 Helston & Wendron Bell Ringers Standing: Mandy Basher, Roger Nott (Tower Keeper), Kate & Nigel Bolland , Bob Woods (Captain), Stanley Pryor, Philip Woods(Vice Captain), Simon Roach, Ray Spencer, Seated: Philip Booker, Nicola Boase, Margaret Pryor (Secretary) Not Present when photo taken: Jean Williams & Amanda Boxer 12 Cornish Connection with Trafalgar Trafalgar Day is on 21st October but you are probably wondering what connection that could possibly have with this part of the world. After Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar in 1805, a Lt Lapenotiere, the commander of a schooner called “Pickle” was ordered to proceed to Falmouth & from there to take the news of the victory to the King in London. It is said that local fishermen off Penzance heard the news from the “Pickle” & were the first to bring the news ashore. As a result the church bells at St Maddern’s church at Madron, which was then the mother church for Penzance, were the first to ring to announce the victory. Apparently the Penzance dignitaries processed to the church with the hastily prepared banner which bore the inscription “Mourn for the Brave the immortal NELSON’S gone. His last sea fight is fought, his work of Glory done” A commemoration service is still held at Madron on the Sunday nearest to 21st October when the ancient banner is paraded. ---------------- Christianity at Madron goes back to very early times & it was a centre of worship for the Celtic Church. There is a Holy Well in the village said to have great healing powers. Also just 2 miles away is Lanyon Quoit & a little further on Men-an-Tol (holed stone) through which children used to be passed to cure them of rickets. Older folk used to scramble through to cure their rheumatism. It is an area worth exploring if you have time to spare- but don’t bank on the rheumatism cure! 13 St Michael’s Rota It would be a great help if anyone unable to attend on a Sunday would attempt to find a replacement for their duty October 6th Trinity 16 October 13th Trinity 17 Lay Asst, M G-Kane K Murphy Epistle M Searle S Bayes Prayers Clergy M Searle Sidespeople J Eddy S Chambers Offertory Junior Church S & M Prior Server N Boase M Searle Crucifer M Boxer S Bayes Coffee M & H Thorn Mothers Union Cleaning T Browne Flowers All N Boase October 20th Trinity 18 October 27th Trinity 19 Lay Asst, M Searle N Boase Epistle M G-Kane E Goodfellow Prayers A Holyer M G-Kane Sidespeople J Lawrence/A Hearne Offertory
