Easter is early this year which means Ash Wednesday falls in mid February. Lent comes from an old English word meaning lengthening (of days). With the increasing amount of daylight, more is visible that needs to be cleaned hence that necessary chore spring cleaning! But does it have to be a chore? In the well known hymn by George Herbert with the first line “ Teach me my God and King”, he writes “nothing can be so mean which with this tincture, For thy sake, will not grow bright and clean. A servant with this clause makes drudgery divine; who sweeps a room as for thy laws makes that and the action fine.” It is certainly a challenge to get into the frame of mind where drudgery is done for God’s sake rather than as just a necessary chore. Parables of Jesus may help here. Luke’s gospel chapter 15 has parables concerning the lost coin, the lost sheep and the lost, prodigal, son. The woman who sweeps the room is so overjoyed to find the silver coin that she had lost that she throws a party, thus spending the money she had recovered on others and not on herself. The woman’s willingness to sweep the house led to the recovery of a day’s wages. Lent should be a time of spiritual renewal. Very often the things we take on or give up during Lent may seem onerous or boring. The hope is that through what we give up or take on we may become more open to God’s Holy Spirit working in our lives. The recovery of the coin by the woman 4 in the story clearly meant a lot to her. It had probably been something she prayed about. It was clearly God’s will that she found it. But it was only through sweeping the room that she found it. I hope that you will be able to make a Lenten resolution this year and remain committed to it. I hope that it will lead to new and deeper insights into the strength of God’s love for you, not only recovering what is lost but also taking you into new fields of opportunity to serve God in the community we live in and seek to support. Wishing you a productive Lent, David Miller, Rector of Helston and Wendron ********* Flag days for February/March February nd 2 ……..Presentation of Christ in the Temple March st 1 ……….St David th 5 ………St Piran th 25 ……..Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary 5 Kimbilio News Happy New Year & thank you for all your support in 2017. (This month’s magazine cover shows the children of Kimbilio sending their personal thanks to you too!!) Our Lent Soup Lunch was a successful event both financially & socially as was our Advent Soup Lunch, however we do appreciate that Christmas is a busy time & maybe this year we will hold it earlier in the year. St Michael’s is committed to CMS & thanks to your giving we have met our targets without drawing on Church Accounts: we all realise the difficulty in meeting our church upkeep & expenditure, A cheque for £500 has been sent to CMS to support John Bosco, a resident in the area, who is a “Timothy Partner” working for CMS in Kimbilio. This fund raising was made possible through soup lunches, our “unwanted gift” stall at the Christmas Fayre, after church coffee, the car boot stall – thanks to John Dower , & donations. We are in regular communication with Kimbilio & you will find our book at the back of the church with photos & updates of life in the Congo. We had a visit in 2017 from Ann Plested (CMS) who took the “sermon slot” at the 9.30 service & gave a very interesting talk on Israel. Unfortunately John Bosco was unable to get a visitors visa this year- we hope this will be possible in the future. Again thank you for your support- from the Kimbilio team- Mary Charnock, Kate & Nigel Bolland, Vicky & John Dower, Mandy Boxer & Susan Summers 6 Services at St Michael’s 1st Sunday 8.00 Holy Communion (BCP) 9.30 All-age Worship with Holy Communion 2nd-5th Sunday 8.00 Holy Communion (BCP) 9.30 Parish Communion(CW) Monday to Thursday 9.00 Morning Prayer Thursday 9.30 Holy Communion Evening & other Services:-as advertised in the Pew- slip Special Services & Groups for Lent & Holy Week see below- Services at Wendron 1st Sunday 10.30 a.m. Holy Communion (CW) 2nd Sunday 10.30a.m Morning Worship rd th 3 - 5 Sunday 10.30a.m Holy Communion (CW) Other Services:-as announced in the Sunday Pew-slip Ash Wednesday Feb 14th. 7 30 pm Holy Communion and Address Ecumenical Lent Discussion Group at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church Thursdays from Feb 15th to March 22nd at 7 00pm The Holy Week services have not yet been arranged but are likely to follow a similar pattern to last year namely: Mon-Wed of Holy Week, March 26-28 7 30 pm Holy Communion and Address Maundy Thursday March 29th 9 30 am Holy Communion. 7 30 pm Agape Meal, Stripping of the Altars and Gethsemane Watch Good Friday 2 pm Hour devotion at the foot of the cross 6 30 pm Compline Easter Eve 10 am Walk of Witness through Helston Easter Sunday: 8 am Holy Communion at Helston 9 30 Parish Communion and Blessing of the Easter Garden at Helston 10 30 Parish Communion and Blessing of the Easter Garden at Wendron 7 In Memoriam- WW1 victims - 100 years ago Charles Noel Walker Tyacke died 28/3/1918 Aged 34 Captain, 5th Battalion (Territorial)Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry ------------ Samuel James Symons died 30/3/1918 Private Gun Corp (Infantry) ----------- Greater love hath no man than these That a men lay down their lives for their friends. I spoke to you so softly as you brushed away a tear “It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea, You were thinking of the many times your hand reached out to me I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore, I longed to take your parcels, I wished I could do more I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care, But I want to reassure you, that I’m not lying there I walked with you towards the house, you fumbled for your key I gently put my hand on you, and smiled and said “it’s me” You looked so very tired and sank into a chair, I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there It’s possible for me to be, so near you every day To say to you with certainty, “ I never went away” You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew… In the stillness of the evening, I was very close to you The day is over…I smile and watch you yawning, I say “Goodnight, God bless you, I’ll see you in the morning” So when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide, I’ll rush across to greet you, and we’ll stand there side by side. I’ve so many things to show you, there’s much for you to see… Be patient, live your journey out, then come home to be with me. 9 Crossword Answers Page 16 Across 5 Regal, like the bride in Psalm 45 (5) 8 ..not ________, but in secret (John 7.10) (8) 9 The two in Isaiah ch. 7 are described as smouldering (5) 10 As cruel as the bible without its eighth book?
