Maidstone January 2020 17 News downsmail.co.uk Lighting up for Christmas MAIDSTONE showed its passion for Christmas by turning out in their thousands to Jubilee Square to see the lights go on in the town. Organised for the first time by the town’s business representative One Maidstone, the event attracted nearly 5,000 people and led to a 17% increase in footfall at nearby Fremlin Walk. The red and white display was or- ganised by Maidstone company Gala Lights, and was turned on in phases across the town centre by the Mayor of Maidstone, Marion Ring, the cast of the Hazlitt’s panto Beauty and Beast and with the help of Neave and Nya Elliott – the winners of a competition at The Mall. While Santa mixed with those in the crowd, former X-Factor star Jake Quickenden (Danon in Beauty and the Beast) wowed everyone with a couple of songs, along with the Molehill Academy and Military Wives choirs and the Powerhouse Gospel singers. One Maidstone’s Sarah-Jane Adams said: “We were really pleased with the turnout for our first lights show. It stayed dry, with a small shower right at the end, but everyone seemed to have a great time.” Jake Quickenden (left) joins panto stars and Maidstone Mayor Marion Ring to turn on the lights

30 Maidstone January 2020 downsmail.co.uk Remembrance Day | News We will remember them THOUSANDS of Maidstone residents from across the borough turned out for Remembrance Sunday at the War Memorial in the town centre on November 10.
