49 years ago, our father Frits Janssen laid the foundation of what has now become a global company, ICE International. Our family business is deeply rooted in our hearts.

Our father involved us in the company since we were children, not just by taking us with him on business trips, but by actually explaining to us what we were doing and why. It was never a one-man show - it was always us, as a family, growing the company. It was a collaboration between all of us, which is still so important to this firm today. Our collaboration as brothers, the collaboration with our teams, with interior designers, and with the production facilities in Nepal, and . At the dinner table so many years ago, our father explained to us just how special this business is, working with families, designers and unique people. It may come as no surprise that, after laying our own foundations, we joined the company to continue our father’s legacy.

Marc took over as leader in 1999 and founded ICE International in 2006. His big dream was for the company to spread its wings and grow internationally. And it did: in 2008 we delivered our first bespoke rugs for the New York Plaza ’s Royal Suite. The demand for bespoke rugs in luxury turned out to be enormous, and ICE International’s designs caught on. In 2010, Rogier joined the company and our growth in the high-end residential and hospitality market continued. Today, we have locations in Dubai, New York and Paris. However, the heart of the company still lies in our headquarters in Waardenburg, the Netherlands, where the design team works its magic.

Why go back in time? It’s important to remember where you came from. The groundwork of this company was laid by our father and, to this day, his standards and values still live on in ICE International. A personal approach, high-quality service, passion and top-of-the-line products are still our core values. If we don’t value what was there yesterday, what we create today is worth nothing tomorrow. That’s why this year, our design team developed ten designs for our new collection, inspired by works of art in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, home of de Nachtwacht (the Night Watch) by Rembrandt van Rijn. A contemporary take on works of the past. Allow our designs to inspire you for your projects, and rest assured you can count on us for handmade carpets of the highest quality in all sizes, materials and shapes. It’s thanks to you, the people we collaborate with, that we can work on what we love every day. So, thank you to all the designers we work with on wonderful projects, and to our friends who were so kind as to write a testimonial in this design book, and a special thank you to Her Royal Highness Princess Margarita de Bourbon de Parme for the wonderful teamwork that we will reveal on page 152.

Yours sincerely, Marc & Rogier Janssen

14 Where we supply to Where we supply to 15 Care & Fair

As a company we find it important to give back to . Since 2018 we support cancer research at KWF and since it’s initiation in 1994 we have been involved in the foundation Care & Fair. In fact, the founder of ICE International, Frits Janssen, was one of the initiators. Care & Fair offers free education and primary medical care to children in India and .

“Wherever the social situation has improved and children have had a school they could attend, child labour has disappeared.” – Terre des Hommes

The main objectives of Care & Fair include: • Abolition of child labour in India and Pakistan • The creation of better living conditions for carpet knotting families • Socially acceptable production – Care & Fair members only accept goods produced at socially acceptable conditions • Setting an example, doing its bit in trying to make the world a better place on a localised level

ICE International’s founder, Frits Janssen, was a strong believer in the empowerment of education. This led him to co-initiate Care & Fair in 1994. He remained active as a dedicated board member and major sponsor for 22 years, and was joined by his son Marc Janssen, who proudly carries on the Care & Fair torch.

Marc Janssen: “When I was ten years old, my father took me on my first ‘business’ trip to Nepal. Besides witnessing the fine craftsmanship of carpet knotting for the first time, we visited a school, which gave me an early but pronounced understanding of the importance of education. I am adamant to enable this empowerment for the children in the communities we work with.”

Care & Fair today: • 9 schools in India and 1 in Pakistan: 3448 children receive free education • 6 adult education centres in India: 231 Women receive free education via the Women Empowerment Program • 3 day care clinics in India and Pakistan 60.248 patients receive free first line medical health care

Marc and Rogier Janssen regularly visit and monitor the Care & Fair projects, often offering extra financial support for the schools and clinics in Nepal and India, and always coming away with the feeling of wanting to do more. Both brothers regard Care & Fair as one of the most rewarding elements of their business.

‘This is the story of an encounter with a group of passionate people and of the immediate affinity we felt with the Janssen brothers. Whether for the Hotel Plaza Athénée in Paris, the Four Seasons Hotel at Ten Trinity Square in London, Anne- Sophie Pic’s restaurant in Valence, or Monte-Carlo apartments in Monaco, ICE has been working by our side as an enthusiastic partner, always pushing the boundaries and allowing us to welcome challenges with confidence and responsiveness.

We undertake projects all around the world that are very different in nature. The carpet is always part of the project. It is more than an accessory, it is an integral part of the storytelling. Initially, there is a drawing, a collage or a watercolor painting that we create ourselves. We share the inspiration and the spirit of the project with the ICE Design team and they are able to work their magic. Beyond the designs, they decode and propose techniques and textures that raise the creation to the next level.

What is most valuable to us with ICE, beyond their incredible level of know-how, is that they care. Their attention to detail, like ours, is extremely high. When projects force us to step out of a certain comfort zone, to explore unexpected aspects, we know that they will be there, ready to answer, precisely, helpfully, and carefully.’

This is an haute couture hotel, where the service is tailored specially to every guest’s needs, and it requires an interior design that is unique. Located on the prestigious fashion boulevard Avenue Montaigne, interior designer Bruno Moinard has created some couture of his own: he painted the designs for the rugs and carpets he wanted to see on the floor of the iconic Parisian Hotel Plaza Athénée. He turned to ICE to see these rugs and carpets turned into reality with a mesmerizing outcome as the result. We supplied the hand-tufted loose rugs and wall-to-wall carpets for the public areas, lobby, reception, ballroom, restaurant, gallery, stairs and salons.

It’s always a haven of luxury, warmth and glamour at the Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square. We are excited to be part of the Four Seasons Hotel collection of contemporary art and design. Our hand-tufted 100% wool rugs are designed by 4BI & ASSOCIÉS, from Paris. To create the eye-catching rug design, interior designer Bruno Moinard supplied the ICE Design team with a watercolor painting done by him personally. Using a special technique, the designers were able to achieve the same fluent, dreamy watercolor effect in the final rug design.

Entry to the restaurant Akira Back is a vortex that brings you into a complete adventure. Upon entering, you’ll notice the detail in abstract design. We collaborated with Keane Brands to recreate Chef Akiras mothers painting, beautiful soft blends of rich colours appear in the carpet and are reflected in the ceiling above to create an atmosphere that surrounds you with warmth. The private dining area features carpet that reflects a distressed and worn environment with moss growth which also is featured in the wall for this space. It’s a really vibrant visual experience. Rooftop bar SoBe transports you to a playground of art as soon as you step foot in to it. The dark forest passage with snakes and peacock feathers that plays on a dark fairytale feeling leads you to the bar and roof terrace. Our rugs contribute a very playful and fun element to this space which is screaming with colours and textures. A unique space in Dubai that marries art and culture in a very striking way.

With the art as inspiration for the interior design, ICE had the privilege of working with Avenue Interior Design on custom-designed rugs. The design firm supplied art and funky patterns as a source of inspiration, ICE turned these into rugs with modern elements, bright accents and a touch of edge that can be seen at all the Penthouse Suites. There is so much respect towards the designer, the final client and the people involved in the process. And then there is the attention to detail. As a rule, I develop my own design which we provide as a visual. We choose the colors from the ICE International palette. The palette is actually extremely nuanced, which makes the details of the carpet so lovely. All of my clients adored the result, because it not only met their expectations but went really far beyond. And just as important: delivery is always on time.’

156 Welcome 157 Design

It could be your mood board, your scenery, your work of art or your scribble on a napkin: inspiration is everywhere. Our design team is very skilled in translating a piece of inspiration into a rug design. Our years of experience with different materials and techniques is one of our tools to create the best possible results. Join us behind the scenes of the design process and allow yourself to be inspired by the designs we showcase in our design index.

How do you design something that never goes out of style? Who better to teach us than the masters of the past, whose works are still relevant today. We have dived into the archives of the Rijksmuseum and translated some beautiful art pieces into rug designs.

Monique Carevic-van Rhee, Design Manager

158 Design Design 159 Art piece: Hat (‘Tonkinoise’) of rips silk; the edge is decorated with ibis feathers.

Tonkin Eline van Wijngaarden | ICE designteam

The way the hat is photographed immediately caught my eye; the mysterious lighting and the coloured background in contrast with all the textures in the hat is just so inspiring. Another interesting element in the picture are the curves on the iron hat stand and the movement it adds to the overall piece. I combined this movement with the texture of the hat to a beautiful and perfectly balanced rug design. The gradational aspect of the rug is a translation of the lighting in the pictures, combining all these elements results in a texturized rug with an interesting movement.

Quality: hand-tufted RC74 | content: Semi Worsted wool & Delicate silk | techniques: striae gradation, pile height variations, loop pile & cut pile.

162 Design Design 163 Art piece: Swan crockery.

Fidelio Jellena Virt | ICE designteam

This piece belongs to one of the most popular sets of tableware from the Meissen porcelain factory. Inspired by the shell shaped tableware with scalloped edges I have created an unusual-shaped rug with a shell-like appearance. The texture of the design is inspired by the sculpted surface of the porcelain which looks like flared waves. I mimicked the texture by using an organic pattern in different techniques such as loop and cut pile. The combination of wool and silk in different soft tones gives the rug design an elegant and luxurious appearance.

164 Design Design 165 Rug interpretation Quality: hand-knotted TN100 | content: wool & silk | techniques: cut pile variations & hidden loop

166 Design Design 167 Art piece: Cape with small studs and rosettes.

Lunéville Jolinde Verbaandert | ICE designteam

‘My love for French lace and hand embroidery immediately drew my attention to this velvet cape from the 1900s with lots of detailing and fine handicraft. The overall look is elegant and sophisticated, but there is so much more to see because of all the techniques used to create this masterpiece. The draping of the velvet and the large puffed sleeves inspired me to use the gradation in the background and to create a unique shaped rug. The overall dot pattern in the cape is created with an embroidery technique which is the inspiration of the ice flowers and icicles in the rug design. To give the design the same richness as the cape I used a deep red color, a royal blue color and a touch of sparkling Lurex in the border.’

168 Design Design 169 Rug interpretation Quality: hand-tufted RC54 | content: New Zealand wool & Lurex | Techniques: gradation, loop pile, cut pile, sculpting & pile height variations.

170 Design Design 171 Art piece: Teacup with a cream-coloured glaze.

Ocha Lindsay van der Kuijl | ICE designteam

This Japanese teacup was the perfect muse as it feeds into my fascination for Asian cultures. The combination of the shape and texture gives the teacup a fragile yet powerful look. I painted the background by hand to capture the same handcrafted and delicate feel going from dark to light creating a gradational effect. The cracked pattern is tufted in a lower loop pile to give the pattern a more abstract disruption. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, to embrace imperfection. I translated this technique in the rug by spraying speckles of gold.

174 Design Design 175 Art piece: Ashwood armchair, used by president Paul Kruger.

Warp Josine Heuts | ICE designteam

How do you translate a partly woven, partly solid wooden chair into a balanced rug design? I played with the composition and contrasts in texture. The Ashwood armchair, used by president Paul Kruger, has a woven backrest with an open and refined character. The seat is woven more densely while the armrests and seat legs have a more solid and smooth surface. I translated the changes in density and texture into rather strong and graphic shapes. Applying different techniques highlights the handmade aspect of our product, just like the armchair.

176 Design Design 177 Rug interpretation Quality: hand-tufted RC44 | content: 100% New Zealand wool | techniques: pile height variations, loop pile variations, mottle combinations, cut pile & fringes

178 Design Design 179 Art piece: Blauwe Ara.

The statue of the blue macaw is quite exotic, the royal blue feathers combined with the white color and the porcelain material immediately made me think of our Dutch traditional Delftware. In the rug design the handmade painterly feeling which is also a characteristic of Delftware is translated into an exotic flower pattern. Using pile height variations and carving gives the rug the same 3D effect as in the feathers of the blue macaw.

Tallado Linda Senden | ICE designteam

The inspiration for this rug is a marbled faience plate from the Rijksmuseum’s private collection. The scalloped edge of the ceramics makes this piece of art very special. Inspired by this element I developed a design that provides a sensation of movement. The marbled effect of the plate is translated in the rug design by using a watercolour texture. By using this technique, we can establish the same fluid effect that is characteristic for this plate. The greenish- blue colours in the piece of art are so catchy and modern that I chose to make them the main colors while combining some grey and beige tones.

Sitz ICE designteam

This 1750’s lady’s jacket is made from Chintz translated as ‘Sits’ in Dutch. Sits fabrics is a hand-painted cotton fabric with a shiny layer. This gorgeous fabric was extremely popular in the 17th century. For the design of this rug, we took the inspiration from the illustration on the jacket and from the material. The rug shows a bold red illustration drawn by hand, executed in loop pile. This represents both the original Sits hand-painted illustrations and the typical red stitching in this specific jacket. This rug is a modern version of this beautiful and innovative fabric and this jacket in particular.

Crepa Sanne van den Hoogen | ICE designteam

‘“De Menagerie” is a painting of an exotic collection of animals, set in an Italian landscape. You may think you capture everything from first glance, but the closer you get to it the more you see. The variety of different textures created by the paint and used brushstrokes inspired me the most. I created a modern and abstract translation of the painting and used different techniques to have the rug design mimic the textured surface shown in the painting. Contrasting colours are subtly blended together and the use of a lower loop pile creates the illusion of a crackled surface.

Adam Nicole Kanters | ICE designteam

A hidden treasure is not easy to find, especially when it is only the size of a walnut. Back in the 16th century, there was a Dutchman called Adam Dircksz who created walnut-sized Prayer Beads, carved out of boxwood. When opening these Prayer Nuts, a divine and intricate hidden interior showing a miniature scene was revealed to the religious eyes of only the happy few. It is not just opening these small wonders that gets you carried away, the complexity and level of detail of the gothic architectural exterior is also stunning. The neutral- coloured pattern consists of different pile height levels to simulate the carving of the boxwood. Who wouldn’t love to walk on a revealed treasure?’
