Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. • “Doghouse Bass” Is the Eagerly Anticipated Third Studio Album by Traditional Ska / Reggae / Rocksteady Band INTENSIFIED, out on Grover Records
“Doghouse Bass” is the eagerly anticipated third studio album by traditional ska / reggae / rocksteady band INTENSIFIED, out on Grover Records. INTENSIFIED are guaranteed to get people dancing and raise the spirits of all around them. Playing authentic 60s style ska, rocksteady and reggae, the band’s good- time feel, obvious love of this music and confidence in its wide appeal has led to near legendary status. The quality of their songs and joy in playing them live has gained the band a large following and a reputation as one of the world’s finest of this genre. Three studio albums, an early compilation album and a live album, plus several 7” singles have received much critical acclaim in the music press, fanzine world, on the web and on radio stations across the globe. This in turn has meant a steady flow of gigging throughout Europe, with the band now a firm headline act. INTENSIFIED have been fortunate enough to share a stage with dozens of bands and singers, from Jools Holland to an authentic Zulu choir, including most of the contemporary ska favourites around the globe: Hepcat, The Slackers, The Toasters, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra … 2 Tone stars such as The Selecter and Bad Manners … and original ska and reggae legends from the past and present including Prince Buster, Jimmy Cliff, Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker, Alton Ellis, Dennis Brown, Phylis Dillon, Morgan Heritage and the originators, Skatalites. The band has also had the pleasure of working on stage with Jamaican greats Rico, Dennis Alcapone and Dave Barker. The band remains standing defiant against a sea of pop, punk and other modern interpretations of original Jamaican sounds, not against progress or to put up musical limitations, but to continue sharing the pure, untampered and uplifting styles with the world.

  • Lee “Scratch” Perry

  • Newsletter 4 Rincipal’S Report
Newsletter 4 rincipal’s Report Spring is here and creative learning is happening from 9am – 5.15pm for all years at Rye Studio School as summer hour’s return. Beyond the busy classroom experience further enrichment has inspired new skills and developed additional team building opportunities. Year 10 worked with industry P partners, Same Sky and Under 1 Sun using performing arts skills to develop and deepen understanding of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Quotations and descriptive passages were brought to life in the creation of a 15ft articulated street theatre puppet. Theatre make-up, documentary photography and carnival drumming extended the theme. Students working diligently with visiting professionals and then took their skills to the streets of France to meet our partner school, College Jean Moulin and parade with them in Parade Des Geants. Year 10 were phenomenal ambassadors, entertaining thousands that lined the streets of Berck and performing for an incredible three hours. What a celebration! Our relationship with the Creative Industries broadened further this term as we welcomed numerous artists, practitioners and business chief executives into Studio School. Artist Ian Penney, showed paper cutting techniques, Dave Barker brought reggae to life with the music students and Beth Butterwick shared top tips on business management. Diverse talent and experience is being shared with our students to create a vibrant, inspiring learning environment. These opportunities are rare and valuable and students share their skills and talents through leadership as seen this term in the Get Set Programme in over ten local schools to gain Arts Awards. As a school we aim to share our opportunities with others and Alex Quisi, Learning Coach for Photography will be setting off to Rwanda this Easter to represent Rye Studio School and support street children by introducing photography skills to them for employment opportunities.

King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 by John Jason Collins Wilson A dissertation Presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © John Jason Collins Wilson, May 2013 ABSTRACT King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 John Jason Collins Wilson Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Doctor Catharine Wilson Reggae music facilitated a cultural dialogue between Jamaican migrant and Canadian host in Toronto during the 1970s and 1980s. Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.
