    Words by Dan Keeling Noble Rot Photographs by meets ecstatic synth- SHOOT FROM THE CHIP SHOOT Benjamin McMahon poppers Hot Chip “Gordon Ramsay used to cook here a long time ago,” says Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, reading the menu at Chez Bruce in Wandsworth. “When I last ate here, a friend from uni was working in the kitchen and I absolutely loved it.” To Joe’s left, fellow band member Al Doyle is enjoying his first drink of the evening – Vouette & Sorbée ‘Saignée de Sorbée’ Champagne – after a day rehearsing in a nearby studio for the band’s imminent support headline slot at Hackney’s All Points East festival. With their new album heralding a high point in their long career (it’s their seventh), the aptly titled A Bath Full of Ecstasy has a blend Dan Keeling: Do you cook at home? Joe Goddard: I cook all the time. I’ve got a Green of synth melodies, bouncing house basslines Egg barbecue and cook a lot of seafood, as well as buying a lot of nice wines from Bottle Apostle to try and soulful vocals that makes it one of our to pair with it. I’m interested in the weirder side of wine. This Vouette & Sorbée reminds me of a records of the year at Rotter Towers. Imagine delicious sparkling red from near Barcelona that I’ve been drinking recently called La Rosita by Pamela Geddes. It’s dry and fruity: it tastes like sparkling Erasure jamming with Daft Punk, Laid Back and Ribena to me, and I’m into that! Frankie Knuckles in a lift, and you might be Al Doyle: It’s delicious and quite unusual – it almost tastes like Pét-Nat rather than Champagne.

The Lions also added a healthy dose of American-style soul, jazz, and funk to create an album that’s both a nod to the funky exploits of reggae acts like Byron 05 Hot No Ho Lee and the Dragonaires and Boris Gardner, and a mash of contemporary sound stylings. 06 Cumbia Del Leon The Lions are an example of the ever-growing musical family found in Los Angeles. Bartsch, Halle (Saale), 2017 LIVERILLEN No. 03 Bluesrock vom Feinsten 00 Jingle + Begrüßung: 03:00 ➢ Und damit herzlich Willkommen zur dritten Sendung der LIVERILLEN hier auf Radio CORAX auf UKW 95,9 und weltweit im Netz – einen guten Tag wünscht Paul Bartsch! ➢ Wie stets gibt’s ausschließlich Konzertmitschnitte direkt von Vinyl, mit Knistern und Knacken > analoger Hörgenuss im digitalen Zeitalter! ➢ Heute lautet das Motto: Bluesrock vom Feinsten / ein Musikstil also, der ganz gegensätzliche Reaktionen hervorruft: Die Einen fühlen sich gelangweilt vom angeblich immer gleichen 12-Takt- Blues-Schema, und die anderen sind gerade von dieser zeitlosen Kraft und Urwüchsigkeit fasziniert! ➢ Ich persönlich gestehe, zu Letzteren zu gehören, zumal schon durch die jeweilige Spielweise der Protagonisten eine große Vielfalt entsteht, was auch die heutige Sendung mit ihren ausgewählten Liveaufnahmen sicher zeigen wird. ➢ Und da geht’s zunächst ganz tief in die Mottenkiste der populären Musik, ohne dass ich nun die Bluesgeschichte in Gänze aufrollen werde. Aber dieser schwarze Musiker ist nicht wegzudenken für das, was seit den 1960er Jahren dann als Bluesrock firmierte. Musiker wie Keith Richards, John Mayall oder auch Eric Clapton sind vor dieser Gitarre ehrfürchtig niedergekniet, auch wenn die wenigen erhaltenen Aufnahmen Jahrzehnte zuvor entstanden waren – die Rede ist von Robert Johnson, dem 1911 im US-Staat Mississippi geborenen Gitarristen, Sänger und Komponisten, der nach nur 27 Jahren verstarb – Giftmord? Syphilis? Todesursache offen – die Legenden ranken. Dazu gleich mehr – hier ist Robert Johnson, der King des schwarzen Delta-Blues, mit seiner Komposition „Love In Vain“ – ein ziemlich bitteres Liebeslied, live eingespielt bei einer Aufnahmesession im Jahr 1937: 01 Robert Johnson: Love In vain 05:00 ➢ Robert Johnson – an ihm ist wohl keiner der später und bis heute dem Blues verfallenen Musiker vorbeigekommen.

This is our 3rd anniversary issue, Natty Mark founding the magazine in June 2016, launching it at the 1st Mikey Dread Festival near Witney (an event that is also 3 years old this year). This summer sees a major upsurge in events involving members of The Dub family – Natty HiFi, Jah Lambs & Lions, Makepeace Promotions, Zion Roots, Swindon Dub Club, Field Frequency Sound System, High Grade and more – hence the launch of the new Dub Diary Newsletter at sessions. The aim is to spread the word about forthcoming gigs and sessions across the region, pulling different promoters’ efforts together. Give thanks to the photographers who have allowed us to use their pictures of events this month.
