For four days the O2 Academy in Islington Cabrians (8) was the only place to be to for those who love off- beat rhythms and Carlos Dingo (2) know how to skank. Caroloregians The (5) Back for its second year, the festival kicked off on Thursday with a headline show from Jamaican trio The Pioneers, and by all Cherry Boop The Soundmakers accounts seemed to be a good start to the festival. Friday night, (3) however, was a different story. Chris Murray (1) The O2 was close to capacity for the much- hyped return of Dandy Cimarons The (1) Livingston, famous for hits Suzanne Beware Of The Devil and Rudy A Message To You, who has not performed in 40 years. First the crowd Clancy Eccles (1) was treated to a warm- up set from Dave Barker, Rico Rodriguez Contratempo (3) and The Pheonix City All- Stars. Each act was given a frustratingly Dandy Fever (1) short set length. It felt more like a showcase than a festival but with only a few songs each but they still managed to captivate the crowd Dandy Livingston (1) and have them singing along. Dave Barker (7) Rico Rodriguez appeared to be a man well past his prime, barely David Hillyard y The Rock even playing the instrument he is known for – the trombone – and Steady 7 (3) spent most of his time alongside the brass section. Ska legend Dave Barker put on an enthusiastic performance that must go down Deal's Gone Bad (1) as the best for the night, playing his hits Shocks Of A Mighty and Delegators The (16) PDFmyURL.com Spinning Wheel to a rapt crowd. Also on show were songs from the Dennis Brown (1) upcoming Phoenix City All- Stars album on which Barker Features heavily. AJ Franklin put on a solid performance too and no doubt left Derrick Harriott (2) everyone in the mood for a set from one of Ska’s original founding Derrick Morgan (9) members, Dandy Livingston. Deskarats (3) As the scheduled time for Dandy Livingston came and went, the crowd became agitated but did their best to remain in high spirits. Desmond Dekker (6) After half an hour of inactivity on stage the evening’s earlier Dinamo (1) performers came back and played an improvised set. It was only Dirty Soul Riders (4) after they left the stage that we learnt Livingston had fallen ill with food poisoning and would not be performing. Dj. Cello (1) It was a huge anti- climax to what had been a heavily hyped Don Drummond (2) performance, indeed the headlining show of the festival. Poor Doreen Shaffer (3) handling of the situation by the organisers made the experience all the more sour and there was much unhappy grumbling as the crowd Dr. Calypso (4) quickly filed out of the venue. Dragonaires The (1) The Festival got back on track with a huge Saturday Night show that Earthquakes The (1) saw The Dualers launch their album supported by Ska Cubano and Freddie Notes. Sunday night was closed with a set by The Specials Eastern Standard Time (1) lead singer Neville Staple Eli Paperboy Reed (4) After each evening’s main performance, festivalgoers were herded Emeterians (1) on the Islington Metalworks where DJs kept the true believers skanking until the sun came up. • CHASE Annual Report 2006 V5.Indd
1 MESSAGE FROM THE HON. MINISTER OF FINANCE & PLANNING Dr. Omar Davies It is with pleasure that I send this message to be part of the annual report for the CHASE Fund for the year 2005/2006. In its short period of existence the Fund has made a significant contribution in the vari- ous sectors for which it has provided support. CHASE is indeed a unique institution in that it is guided by a Board of highly competent individuals, specialists in their own fields, but united around the objective of fostering development in the sectors of society which are needed in the continued process of “civilizing” our beloved country. Futhermore, the activities supported by CHASE also benefit greatly from voluntary contributions especially in terms of professional expertise. The operations of the CHASE Fund provide a concrete example of the possibilities of our country when we unite around attaining common objectives. As Minister with responsibility for the Fund, I place on record appreciation for the work of the Board, the management and the staff, not only over the past year but during the life of the institution.

Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. If you would like to add to, or alter, an entry please send an email to [email protected] 3 4 4 HERO An influential group made up of Dego and Mark Mac, who act as the creative force; Gus Lawrence and Ian Bardouille take care of business.

Afrikan History Season swings into full gear this month in Oxfordshire, with the opening of the Windrush Years exhibition at the Museum of Oxford and the conference on the legacies of Emperor Haile Selassie I. A huge thank you to the organisers of the One Love Festival and all the artists and performers for making us feel truly welcome. I hope the reviews do the event justice. As for local events, Reggae On Tap goes from strength to strength and new venture Enjoy Yourself starts this month at The Swan in Eynsham on a regular basis thanks to long time The Dub contributor Richie Roots. Finally a big thank you to Prince Jamo and Messenger Douglas for a pair of fantastic interviews, tune in next month for the first in our Tales From Birmingham. Welcome to The Dub Editor – Dan-I [email protected] The Dub is available to download for free every month at reggaediscography.blogspot.co.uk and rastaites.com The Dub magazine is not funded and has no sponsors. While this allows for artistic freedom, it also means that money for printing is very limited.
