    The Account of Roderick Macrae The Account of Roderick Macrae I am writing this at the behest of my advocate, Mr Andrew Sinclair, who since my incarceration here in Inverness has treated me with a degree of civility I in no way deserve. My life has been short and of little consequence, and I have no wish to absolve myself of respon- sibility for the deeds which I have lately committed. It is thus for no other reason than to repay my advocate’s kindness towards me that I commit these words to paper. Mr Sinclair has instructed me to set out, with as much clarity as possible, the circumstances surrounding the murder of Lachlan Mackenzie and the others, and this I will do to the best of my ability, apologising in advance for the poverty of my vocabulary and rudeness of style. I shall begin by saying that I carried out these acts with the sole purpose of delivering my father from the tribulations he has lately suffered. The cause of these tribulations was our neighbour, Lachlan Mackenzie, and it was for the betterment of my family’s lot that I have removed him from this world. I should further state that since my own entry into the world, I have been nothing but a blight to my father and my departure from his household can only be a blessing to him. My name is Roderick John Macrae. I was born in 1852 and have lived all my days in the village of Culduie in Ross-shire. My father, John Macrae, is a crofter of good standing in the parish, who does not deserve to be tarnished with the ignominy of the actions for which I alone am responsible.

The Strathcarron Project is a Scottish registered charity. The charity was set up to create, and then run, the Howard Doris Centre. The concept of the Howard Doris Centre was unique and seen as an ambitious idea in its day. After 21 years, it still remains a “one-off”! We’re governed by a board of directors, all of whom live locally and give their time freely. Our directors represent everyone in our local communities - Lochcarron, Kishorn, Shieldaig, Torridon, Applecross and further afield. The Howard Doris Centre is an impressive partnership effort between the Strathcarron Project, NHS, Highland Council and Albyn Housing Association. What do we do? Since opening in August 1996, the charity has provided permanent accommodation for six local people, a respite suite and two medical beds. On Mondays to Fridays, we provide a wholesome, freshly cooked two-course lunch, with morning coffee and delicious home-baking for up to forty guests. Free transport to and from the Centre is provided. And we organise a wide variety of activities each week. Our respite suite provides a sanctuary for a week or more. It allows relatives and carers to have a well-deserved break. Often regarded as a wee holiday (all inclusive!), many respite clients book regularly. Our capable and friendly team of nurses and healthcare assistants look after patients in our two medical beds.

Background; West Highland Dairy is run by Kathy and David Biss, and is located around 10 miles from LCDC’s main base. They produce a variety of cheeses and other dairy products for sale via their farm shop and local outlets. Cheese and Dairy product workshops are offered throughout the year. WHD also produce a variety of hard cheeses and mould ripened cheese which take 9 months to mature. Their premises are small and located within the curtilage of their own home. WHD regularly attended our market days. In 2014, they approached us explaining that they wished to retire within the next few years. They had worked hard to establish their well-known brand over 30 years, and wished to pass on their business and knowledge to a local organisation with an agricultural background. West Highland Dairy currently produce a variety of cheeses, ice-cream, yoghurt, crème fraiche, preserves, butter, and cheese based desserts. The fact that their premises are small limits the range of products they can produce. After much discussion, it was agreed to further investigate the idea – would it be feasible? Could we pull it off? Could we arrange the finance for a new build at Strathcarron – many ifs, buts and maybes? HIE provided us with a small grant to allow for further investigation Transferring the Business; LCDC has land available for a new build. West Highland Dairy are willing to donate their business, customers, and brand name, as well as much of their equipment, stock at cost, and remain on board as consultants for two years after the build is complete.

How time flies. We opened the old butcher's shop as an art gallery on 25th March 2016. We were excited – running such a venture was a new experience for all of us but we were clear from the start about the kind of gallery we wanted it to be. Working together in a partnership was also new, but Mairi, Cindie and I (and latterly Steven) quickly discovered that we each had something different to contribute. We also had good contacts with local artists and the wider artistic community - this enabled us to offer a mix of high-quality products. And when one customer said, “What a haven of originality and creativity!” that was music to our ears. The joys There have been lots of high points. The visit of BBC Alba to our book event with Graeme Macrae Burnet was a wonderful fun-filled afternoon. Doing a printmaking workshop for the Howard Doris ladies was another great experience. Watching how people have responded to Steven's watercolour workshops and Sarah Longley's drawing sessions has been intriguing. Just being in the gallery on a sunny day and looking out across the sparkling sea has also been a joy. Lochcarron Main Street is a beautiful location.
