PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I am pleased to report to you that the league has enjoyed another successful season.

Singleton was added as a new club this year and although their committee’s initial intention was the submission of an Under 18 grade their reserve grade turned out to each game to finish in fourth position.

At a meeting with the Board, Singleton player and convenor, Corey Oldham informed them that he had placed an advertisement in the Singleton Argus Newspaper regarding a team and received 65 replies. This in itself is a good indication of a healthy interest in the Hunter Valley club and with this in mind the board had thoughts of Singleton entering the first grade sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, this does not appear to be the case.

Whilst we gained Singleton we lost Woy Woy’s Under 18 team which was suspended when they forfeited their fourth game for the season in round 8. The Woy Woy Club needs to give their future a frank evaluation.

The season progressed relatively well with few problems. Clubs were geared into upgrading the results etc. on Sporting Pulse, our representative programme was set in place and the rules and by-laws had been amended with new provisions added for the league and clubs each to supply a child protection officer. Our codes of conduct were upgraded, we adopted an infection diseases policy and a racial and religious vilification policy was introduced. Our rules are increasing in an attempt to negate any possible litigation, insurance issues and social pressures which might result from events occurring in and around our games.

Some perennial matters still plague the league. These include the severe inconvenience caused when three team clubs have to split their number when playing clubs with two teams. This is a major concern in the league with the two team clubs almost completely unaffected. Of course the root of problem is catering for the different number of teams in each grade and providing a draw to suit.

Umpiring is probably always going to be a concern for the league and this situation is probably consistent with similar competitions throughout Australia. This year we applied more pressure to clubs to supply club umpires to control certainly first division and at times under 18 games.

This concept is generally regarded as foreign and an intrusion into the playing ranks. It was not well received but is one which we have to persist with if we are going to continue to field the number of teams in the competition we do.

The winners of the Black Diamond Cup, Cardiff, had an outstanding team and sensational season. They were worthy of their premiership and their place in the history of the BDAFL – three successive premierships and figured in each grand final since the league’s inception.

Again Garry Burkinshaw as General Manager played a pivotal role in the league’s activities. He is the engine room of the competition and carries out league policy under the direction of the board without fear or favour. I again commend Garry for his work.

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

Again, I worked very closely with the General Manager. Phone calls and emails passed between us very often, sometimes several times a day. I have established a good rapport with him and this relationship has been very fruitful for the league.

With the seniors we have settled into an 18 h & a season and four finals. It works well. Again we have had suggestions of expanding the finals to five teams, but the Board can see little credence in the proposal.

This year we were able to encourage the involvement Panthers Newcastle, Fosters Australia with the league and in preparation for 2007 and beyond, Prime Television.

Our Business Group proved not as successful as it has been in previous seasons and this year did not deliver the funds the league considered it would. It was offset by the involvement of Panthers Newcastle who approached us midseason with a view of establishing a commercial relationship. This was achieved and launched at a President’s Meeting in May.

We have found the association rewarding and we happily transferred the league’s medal night in September to the downtown venue. A function was also held at the club in March when Carlton FC visited Newcastle as part of the AFL’s Community Camps and again in August when Panthers hosted a Barassi Club function.

It is so important that the league continues to generate sufficient funds to augment it’s operations. Club affiliation fees still comprise the major income stream with the introduction of certain initiatives we have been able to curb any increase in this area for a number of years. To maintain this situation the league must be forever vigilant in sourcing as many areas of alternative and legitimate income as possible.

A new concept this year was to place surplus funds the league was holding into a short term investment account. At times the league, and not necessarily by design, has a surplus of funds in it’s accounts whilst it awaits payment for a particular expense, ie insurance etc. The idea was to invest this money to derive interest from it rather than let it wallow in the cheque account for a month or so. Pleasingly this has generated in excess of $1,500 this year and we will be looking to maintain this strategy in the future.

It is these types of ideas we need to pursue.

Without doubt our biggest achievement this year was the performance in the Cougar Sportswear Country Championships at Wagga Wagga in May.

Upon winning the three lead-up games had the league play the RFL in the decider and at half time in that match had not kicked a goal to the opposition’s five. We managed one in the third term but were still 30 points down at the last change.

To be in that position then come out and win the game was an outstanding effort and those who were there, I dare say, will never again witness a match of this capacity xxx in their lifetime.

The win is a benchmark for the league evidence of the competition’s improvement and standing within the community.

The other representative game was the Under 18 team which travelled to Canberra to play an ACT representative team.

29 October, 2006 4

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

We had a number of officials withdraw before the trip which left it bare of supervisors so hours before the bus left I decided to travel with the team.

We were provided with apartment style accommodation which was spread over a large area. The night before the game and after the boys had been fed and returned to their billet, I and another official left the area for a short period and boys being boys, a number of them found the temptation of alcohol too much resulting in officials having to nurse some players throughout the night. A large damage bill was paid to the facility owners in the morning. One player was suspended from participating in the game.

I acknowledge my absence was a mistake but this alone could not have prevented what happened.

Having said that, it was not all the players who acted inappropriately.

The team was undermanned but performed as best they could. They were easily defeated.

Throughout the season the board was confronted with the belief in some quarters that the Under 18 competition was not as effective as it should be.

There were suggestions of changing the age group, lack of numbers and poorly skilled players.

As a result a study of the competition was carried out by myself. It found that numbers were very healthy. 259 players were registered in the Under 18 grade, (excluding the suspended Woy Woy team) and one third of them aged under 16. This was expected when clubs failed to sustain sufficient aged group for their team on a weekly basis and supplemented numbers from players their junior (Under 16) grade.

The study also revealed that the suggestion of altering the age group was unfounded. There was nothing to support this view.

What it did find though was a general poor skill level across the board and that clubs should look to better coaching methods in this and junior grades.

It also found also that teams and clubs were poorly managed and as a result offered a suggestion that playing some games of a Friday Night could help the all round fixture configuration and the freeing up of players to allow them more leisure time on their weekends.

Finally it suggested that the league should introduce a system of club coaches. A person to assist and instruct coaches in each club with possibility of funding for these positions from the league. The amalgamation of this with the AFL’s coach mentoring system should be considered.

The league’s website which has played such an important role in communication with players, club personnel and supporters received an unbelievable amount of hits. By the end of September this year the site had achieved over 400,000 page hits in the period since it’s launch in January 2005. This is truly remarkable.

Throughout this year several changes have been made to the site. On the home page a panel was inserted which provided a ready look at results from the previous week’s games. The Carlton Draught Logo was installed with a link to a list of the players who had been awarded Fosters Australia products.

29 October, 2006 5

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

There were also changes to the representative player screen and other minor enhancements.

Unfortunately the website designer relinquished his position with the league and a search is currently underway for a replacement. Because of the popularity of the site the league will fund an upgrade which will provide a new ‘look and feel’ as well the introduction of some minor changes.

The BDAFL website has been an outstanding success and a vehicle though which the league has been able to convey and provide information about the competition without hinder or prejudice of other interests.

The medal night this year was taken to Panthers Newcastle. This was in response to their sponsorship of the competition but also because of the facilities the club offered in their auditorium.

Two hundred people attended a night which because of the audio visual resulted in another success for the league.

2006 was Regional Development Manager, Allan Waud’s, last season. He had worked for the AFL since 1995 and witnessed many changes in the AFL’s development of the game within the region. A farewell luncheon was held for Allan at Swansea RSL late in September to recognize his contribution to the sport.

Few realise what a battle it was to have Allan or his position acknowledged and funded by the AFL. Initially both the Central Coast and Newcastle Football Leagues had to contribute funds to sustain the position. This occurred in 1994-5- 6 with each providing $7,500 in the final year before the AFL fully totally took over the responsibility for the development manager’s employment.

For the second successive season the Board made an active attempt in monitoring the activities of the clubs and went through an interview process at the end of 2005 where their performance for the previous season was scrutinised. The subjects discussed included players, coaching, management and finance. They were also quizzed about their proposed activities for 2006.

The General Manager has suggested that in the future the Board undertake two reviews. One at the season’s end and the other either before or immediately after Christmas. This to be done in order to ensure clubs are conscious of the Board’s awareness of club’s situations and to monitor what progress they are making for improvement in the impending season.

It is important that clubs understand the importance of having appropriate and qualified people on the Board of the league. Most come from a club background and some are still involved with clubs which provides an integral understanding of club opinion. Regardless, it takes a special person to accept the role, grab it with both hands and provide the league with a quality performance. We need Board members to demonstrate leadership, attend meetings and provide sound advice and counsel when and where it is needed.

And what of the future for the league?

The BDAFL has a strategic plan. It appears on the website but otherwise is not particularly well promulgated. Whilst it is punctuated with buzz words and contemporary phrases it nevertheless is in essence is a sound document and I see the goals enumerated in it being slowly achieved.

29 October, 2006 6

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

I have no hesitation in saying that the Black Diamond FL is a strong, well managed and financially secure organisation. Additionally I offer the opinion that it is the best league in the state and if it’s positive and solid management style continues, the prospects are unlimited.

The ultimate in this league is for all clubs to field three competitive teams. This is a utopian view of the future and perhaps with some of the present affiliates I don’t know if that is achievable but a goal nonetheless. Twelve clubs in this league would probably pull it up so the only real way we can grow the code is by looking outside the square and one way then is the addition of another open age grade: a fourth grade and my position on this issue is well known.

We need more umpires. I believe they are on the way but a slow and understanding process.

We need an improved ethos in clubs. I think the attitude of the people administering most clubs is changing - for the better. There appears to be a realisation we are past a perception that we are all just here for a kick of the footy. Those days are long gone and now with the way the league is administered and the presentation of the game here in 2006 it’s overall image within the community appears to be improving. We are no longer those also-rans from the AFL.

The Board has for the most part maintained it’s standards and in some cases raised the bar. I hear than people asking why they should do things which amount to an extra effort or is above and beyond what is called for. The answer is that that is what success is built on because when you act and perform professionally and have a good understanding on what you are doing, you make an impression. And those we need to impress are potential sponsors, the media, local government and most of all new players to our ranks.

Never lose sight of the fact that the BDAFL is the flagship for the game in the area and we need to do it right. It’s not easy and mistakes are bound to happen but for the most part I think we are getting there and are being recognized for our effort and position. But we all have to play our part.

People enjoy a challenge. I am very much of the opinion that we, as a Board have to introduce new ideas and at times vary the ways we do things in the league. These changes become a challenge. When people conquer those challenges they look for the next one. We must be in the position to answer that call.

It is these challenges which generate success.

I have found that so many in the football world take the foot off the accelerator with their football activities because it is a pastime and not a vocation. Success will come to those who try regardless of what they are involved in. For example, some people don’t mark their ground as well as they could because it’s only a game and anyhow, who cares’ – just get it done. We all care and it does count.

Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven't planted.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

2006 season has come and gone and it is now time to review the year and prepare for 2007.

I congratulate the 2006 Premiers, Cardiff Hawks in the Black Diamond Cup, for the third consecutive season, and Newcastle City in 1st Division and Under 18’s on their success. Unfortunately Grand Final day was marred by the wet weather which turned No 1 Sportsground into a lake by the time the Black Diamond Cup game commenced. It was a case of “damned if you do and damned if you don’t” in relation to playing the game but full credit to both the Cardiff and Newcastle City players for the way in which the final was played in the conditions. Also full credit to the supporters who turned up in such appalling conditions to support their teams.

Congratulations also to Newcastle City on winning the Club Championship award.

Planning for the 2006 season commenced immediately following last year’s October AGM. This was the final stage of the Towards 2006 process which saw clubs submit ideas on ways to improve the BDAFL. These ideas were then passed onto all the clubs for their comment and then subsequently the more important of these were raised at the planing day. Several recommendations were then put to the Board for their consideration with a good proportion implemented. This process has been repeated for 2007.

The BDAFL held reviews with all clubs in the off season to discuss the clubs performance both on and off the field in 2005 as well as their position heading into the 2006 season.

Eight teams were accepted into the Black Diamond Cup competition with eleven in 1st Division and ten in the Under 18s. This year Terrigal Avoca fielded a side in the Under 18 competition after withdrawing in 2005 however their inclusion was offset by Nelson Bay who were unable to field a team.

The completion of the draw was no easy task given the uneven team numbers in the three grades. The result of this is that all clubs would be split on at least two occasions during the season. This is an area of discontent amongst those clubs affected as it severely stretches their resources on match day. Unfortunately with the variation in team numbers there appears little can be done but this has a high priority.

The Under 18 draw was further disrupted when Woy Woy Peninsula were suspended from the competition after Round 8 following their fourth forfeit. The competition By-Laws state that if a club forfeits on four occasions they are automatically withdrawn from the competition. This scenario meant that some teams, although isolated, were without a game for up to three weeks which is not a satisfactory arrangement.

2006 saw the minimum number of players for the Under 18 competition increase from a minimum nine per side to twelve. Whilst some clubs struggled at times it was satisfying to note that most were able to fulfil all their commitments.

This year’s competition was conducted over twenty four weeks with the home and away season consisting of 20 weeks plus four for the finals series.

29 October, 2006 8

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

The Black Diamond Cup had 18 scheduled matches plus two general byes. This meant that each team played each other twice on a home and away basis as well as an additional four random matches. Each club played nine home and nine away matches during the season.

The Under 18 representative fixture was played on Saturday of the June long weekend with all competition matches re-scheduled to the Monday.

Wet weather played a big part in the season with a number of games having to be transferred to alternative venues. Two of these locations, Hawkins Oval and the ground at Mt Penang, Kariong are excellent wet weather grounds and more importantly are not controlled by councils which allow more flexability when club grounds are closed. The Board has taken steps to secure these two fields as permanent AFL venues from next season.

Unfortunately the wet weather together with the tight scheduling claimed some fixtures with two Black Diamond Cup, four 1st Division and two Under 18 games unable to be played or rescheduled. These matches were cancelled and for the purposes of the competition ladders, declared a draw.

The continual wet weather during the season highlighted the inadequacies of the BDAFL’s wet weather policy. The Board has resolved to review this with a more thorough by-law to be implemented prior to the commencement of the 2007 season.

As strange as it may seem and given the amount of wet weather experienced during the season and particularly in the finals, the Central Coast have recently moved to Level 4 Water Restrictions. This will have a dramatic impact on the BDAFL with now no outdoor watering permitted. This includes irrigating the grounds and also preventing showers for players after training and matches.

Both Wyong and Gosford Councils have held meetings with sporting bodies to discuss ways to maintain sporting fields in a satisfactory condition. They have declared that no pre-season training will be permitted on their ovals and clubs able to train on one night a week during the season. Given this, the onus will be on the Central Coast clubs to find alternative training venues which is where Mt Penang Oval might play a part. They should be doing this now.

The councils have also suggested that all codes should look to shorten their seasons to allow a greater break between seasons to enable any renovation work to be completed.

The growth of the Black Diamond Australian Football League and it’s increased image throughout the region has prompted the Board to register the name and the logo as trademarks. This is currently underway and means that no other person, group or organisation can use the league’s name or identifier without first obtaining permission.

Coaching Accreditation was again compulsory for all appointed coaches. A course was held over two weekends in March where a total of 39 gained accreditation. An additional one day course was held in July where a further 12 underwent instruction.

AFL Regional Manager Andrew Larkin conducted the inaugural Coaches Forum also in July with 35 attendees and it is anticipated that this will lead to the formation of a local Coaches Association.

29 October, 2006 9

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

Insurance for clubs, players and public liability was again taken out through JLT Sport as part of the National AFL Program. AFL NSW/ACT paid the premium on our league’s behalf then invoiced the BDAFL who in turn invoiced the clubs over two equal instalments. The NCCUA was also covered under this policy with additional cover taken out through the NSW (Government’s) Sporting Injuries Insurance Scheme. A number of people within the league have remarked that the cover provided players is inadequate however I suggest those who feel this way need to consider the options which are available to upgrade their insurance.

There are three levels of cover available and by default all clubs throughout Australia receive are provided with the lowest or minimal protection.

The league continued to use the Sporting Pulse Competition Management System which enabled player registrations and match information to be input directly and edited by club personnel.

Home clubs were also required to update match details by 11:00pm on the night of the game/s and SMS the results to me within 10 minutes of the finish of the senior game. I commend those who undertook this duty for their dedication in the way they got the job done.

The BDAFL continued with the Yellow & Red Card (Send-Off) System as well the Prescribed Penalty option for reported players.

When a reportable incident was encountered the field umpire had the authority to send the player from the ground using a yellow card for minor offences for 15 minutes of elapsed playing time and a red card for more serious offences which encompassed the remainder of the match. In both cases the player was not permitted to be replaced.

Only 20 yellow cards were issued across the three competitions for the season.

The prescribed penalty meant that players who were reported were given the option of taking a set penalty rather than appearing before the tribunal (the option wass subject to the discretion of the reporting umpire and the General Manager). This year of the 23 reports, 16 opted to take the Prescribed Penalty.

The league’s Investigative Officer was only called upon to examine one incident during the year following a citing by the Newcastle City FC against a Singleton player. This resulted from an alleged incident in their 1st Division clash in round 7. Following the investigation the Singleton player was cited to appear before the tribunal where a guilty verdict resulted in a suspension.

The Investigation Officer is a lawyer and has suggested a number of changes to the league’s by-laws to simplify any such or similar process.

This year the Newcastle Central Coast Umpires Association (NCCUA) became affiliated with the BDAFL for the first time, which the Board considered a very positive step. The Board also approved a three year agreement with the NCCUA for the supply of umpires. There was no increase in umpires’ fees for the 2006 season however small increments have been agreed to for the 2007 & 2008 seasons.

This year also saw the appointment of Grant Godfrey as the Umpires Coach, now a BDAFL paid position. Also introduced was the implementation of an Umpires Appointment Panel consisting of a BDAFL Nominee, a NCCUA Nominee as well as Grant. Whilst only in their infancy I believe that both initiatives worked quite well and Grant and the two John’s are to be commended on their job.

29 October, 2006 10

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

Umpire numbers again were of a concern and to someway counter this situation the BDAFL softened its stance to allow umpires to officiate in Under 18 and 1st Division matches on the same day. The BDAFL did however insist on two umpires for each game with Club Umpires recruited to assist the NCCUA if required. For one reason or another this did not work as well as intended and a review will be completed as part of the planning process.

With NCCUA numbers not showing any significant signs of growth, Club Umpires will continue to play a greater role in our football. Most clubs have accepted this position and have taken steps to ensure they are able to meet this requirement however there are still some who have not reacted as positively as others. Ironically it is these clubs who are also the most critical about the performances of NCCUA officials.

The BDAFL Board has reiterated on numerous occasions that the days of one umpire officiating in any BDAFL matches are long gone.

This year the league also introduced a new payment system for umpires which required the home club to pay the umpires in cash at the conclusion of their match. The benefits of this were seen as:

o Elimination of umpires waiting sometimes up to two months to be paid. o Immediate payment which could help attract additional umpires. o Clubs no longer subject to the GST component on payments.

There was a mixed reaction to this change, the main issue from clubs it being an impedence in their cash flow. It also required a completely independent attitude from home clubs with a need for the ground manager to be at and with the umpires after each game with their money, win or lose.

The whole concept will again be discussed on the planning day.

Also this year the league provided identifiable Ground Manager’s vests which were to be worn by responsible home club personnel as a means of identification to the opposition, umpires and supporters. This new system worked very well and has been adopted by other leagues within the state.

Whilst the 2006 season was a great success it would be remiss of me not to mention an unfortunate incident which occurred during the season.

In a 1st Division match at No 1 Sportsground Newcastle City player Edward “Groover” Cross was severely injured. He suffered a severe head injury which is likely to have a significant long term affect on his life and it appears as though he will not make a full recovery. A number of benefit days were held for Groover and I am certain that everyone in the BDAFL joins with me in wishing him all the very best in his recovery.

In closing I would like to thank all those people who have assisted me in my role this year, in particular to Ian and his Board, the Club Presidents, Secretaries and Grant Godfrey in his role as NCCUA Liaison Officer.

See you in 2007.

UMPIRES COACH REPORT This year we had a total of 52 umpires join the umpires association. This compares to 42 members in 2005. The increase was due to some extra recruits from the junior groups and some sourced from outside organisations. This season we recruited 9 people who had not umpired before. This represents almost 1/5th of all umpiring numbers.

This season we formed a strong link with the Central Coast junior umpiring group. This provided to be a fruitful union and one that will continue to grow in the future. A number of these umpires took part in the finals this season, with Marc Trialonas going on to umpire the first grade grand final on the boundary. As displayed by this there is a pathway for umpires from the Central Coast if they wish to be part of the group.

Training was conducted at Hawkins Oval on a Monday and Wednesday night. Training was well attended as a general rule. Roger Crowhurst was appointed Fitness Coach for the group. Training was varied and as a result many umpires were fitter than in the past. Regular fitness tests were conducted with some very good results being displayed. One of the main issues to confront the group will be an ageing population. Measures will need to be undertaken to ensure the large percentage of the group are managed to keep them in football.

This season saw the introduction of a Selection Panel comprised of Grant Godfrey, John Sullivan and John Mc Mahon. The selection panel met on several occasion to discuss appointments and in particular during the finals. I would like to take the opportunity to thank John Mc Mahon for his input and positive manner he brought to this job.

The finals of the BDAFL demonstrated the quality of the umpiring group we have assembled. The manner in which the umpires conducted themselves was first class with no major controversies. Out of 21 umpires officiating in the Grand Final, 4 were from the Central Coast. This was part of our development plan and it is pleasing to see a greater input from the southern region.

Another notable achievement was the first female field umpire ever to officiate in the field in a grand final. Kim Harding umpired extremely well throughout the finals and is a credit to the umpiring group. Her and other females add another dimension to the umpiring ranks, and more should be encouraged to take up the job.

This year we had 18 people officially gain their accreditation across a number of disciplines. To add to this we had 13 people re accredit across a number of disciplines. The umpiring group as a whole worked hard to update their skills and knowledge and should be commended.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank Garry Burkinshaw and Ian Granland for their guidance and professional manner in which they have dealt with the umpiring group.

SPONSORSHIP As mentioned previously in this document their was a decline in the league’s Business Group this year however this was made up with the association created with Panthers Newcastle sponsoring the Black Diamond Cup.

This club is a central, steady part of the entertainment scene in Newcastle and one very worthy of your patronage.

Foster’s Group played a big part in the league for the first time and in doing so enabled their product and in particular, Carlton Draught, to be put before the players and supporters in a positive and supporting manner.

There were other businesses who were involved with the league and all were regularly highlighted on our website on a rotating basis and weekly in the league’s Football Record.

A big disappointment is the lack of/nil coverage the competition receives from NBN TV in Newcastle. The exact reason for this is unsure as NBN Central Coast provided excellent coverage and we understand had spoken to the Newcastle station on our behalf, without luck.

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

The league are grateful for the coverage that the game received and will continue to pursue a greater exposure in 2007 especially given our new relationship with Prime TV.

ELLIOTT DAVEY MEDAL NIGHT This year the Night was held at Panthers Newcastle, a condition of the sponsorship deal which had been signed with the club.

The only drawback to this was the travel involved for the Central Coast club people. Nevertheless, there were few grumbles.

Panthers provided a very professional atmosphere. The main auditorium is big and easily catered for the 240 in attendance. This was 50 more last year.

One of the league’s goals is to grow this night into a glamour event in the leagues calendar, and it will happen.

Initially tickets were struck at $55 which included a three course meal and drinks.

Following some implied complaints, the alcohol component was removed which bought the cost down to $35. Clubs were still required to take 20 tickets at $30 each, the total cost of which was contained in their annual payments to the league.

Life members were invited free of charge. The league’s policy on this is to invite a specific number of life members and their partners each year on a rotational basis. Those who attended were acknowledged and an attempt was made to seat them with each other for the evening.

Also invited were representatives of local government, sponsors and members of the media.

The MC was former player and well known media personality on the Central Coast and in sporting circles, Steve Allan. His performance very much contributed to a successful night.

During the evening a framed, signed Jumper was raffled with a portion of the proceeds going towards payment for certain activities on the night.

One of the major benefits of holding the night at Panthers was the audio visual facilities. There are three co-joined screens each measuring approx. 3m x 3m which dropped down at the rear of the stage. It was possible to show a different visual presentation on each should we have needed and this option plus the sound was outstanding.

Vision from BDAFL matches was supplied by NBN Central Coast and was shown during the evening. Besides the count, vision from Almost Footy Legends was also displayed. These proved very popular with the audience.

This year the awards themselves were restricted to plaques which was considered a much better reward than the plastic trophies so often presented these days.

As an adjunct to Foster’s Australia input for the season and on the night, the Carlton Draught Big Ad was shown on the screen.

A condition of entry asked for males to wear a collar and tie and women suitably attired. It was pleasing to see the result, particularly from Under 18 players.

A photographer was arranged for the night which was very much appreciated and he took some very significant photographs.

The night was considered an outstanding success.

TRIBUNAL

Firstly congratulations to Cardiff on winning their third consecutive Premiership and to all those players, officials and volunteers who participated in making the 2006 BADFL season the success that it was and deserved to be. As far as the Tribunal is concerned the clubs, and players are to be congratulated on the manner in which the games were played this year as the Tribunal only had the need to meet on seven (7) occasions to adjudicate on the following offences:

ƒ Charging - 1 charge ƒ Striking – 3 charges ƒ Abusive and insulting language towards an umpire – 3 charges.

16 other players took the prescribed penalty options.

Compared to last season this is a marked improvement on the players’ attitude to the rules and the manner in which it should be played. It is however disappointing that some are still being reported for not respecting the Umpires.

The system of Red and Yellow cards and the Prescribed Penalty system have contributed to the low number of occasions on which the Tribunal was required to meet and in the view of the Tribunal should be continued.

In conclusion I would like to thank the following people who freely gave of their time to participate in essential and sometime difficult duties of the Tribunal: George Simpson, Paul Deaves, Tim Osborne, Rob Starke, Adam Mooney.

Wes Lasscock Chairman.

REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL The league was invited to participate in the NSW Cougar Sportswear Country Championships which were held in Wagga on Saturday, May 20.

Board Member Rob Dixon was appointed chairman of selectors with Dean Wall again the coach. Peter Harvey from the Killarney Vale Club was assistant coach.

The team trained twice at Newcastle No 1 Sportsground, once on the Central Coast at Adcock Park and a final session at Newcastle No. 1 Sportsground followed by a team dinner and presentation at Panthers Newcastle.

Our 2005 best player, Cardiff’s Shawn Simpson was injured and unavailable and his 198cm ruckman team mate, Ben McMahon had been suspended three days before the game. Despite this we had a good side but were not overly confident. After all, the opposition was very good.

We took three umpires: Central: Roger Crowhurst, Boundary: Shane Lambourn and Goal: Joe Wenta.

The trip to Wagga was by bus supplied by Port Stephens Coaches. Dean Wall kept the players busy on the trip which engendered a firm sense of comradeship amongst them.

Accommodation was at the Palm and Pawn Motor Inn at North Wagga. This was the same as last year and was a pleasant venue.

A training session was held at the nearby McPherson Oval, home of North Wagga FC.

Unfortunately the one through whom the booking was made had not conveyed the information onto their coach and the team found themselves unwanted guests and were eventually requested to leave but not before the session had achieved its aim.

A team dinner was held on the Friday Night with a few speeches and afterwards the players were permitted free reign, so long as they remained within the precincts of the hotel. Only one or two continued at the bar before team staff had to step in and suggest bed. This incident was not viewed as a major issue.

The series was played at two venues, the major one, Maher Oval adjacent to the Rules Club and the other at the nearby Anderson Oval. Thankfully our three preliminary games were all played at Anderson Oval so we didn’t have to up stumps and move between games whilst each of our opposition did.

At first we thought playing all the games at Anderson Oval befitted our perceived position in the competition but afterwards felt it worked in our favour.

The ground was not manned when we arrived and we had to wait for someone to open the change sheds etc. The warm-up was good and very positive. A team photograph was taken.

The series was played between four leagues on one day. There were three preliminary games, each of two 15 minute halves with the two top teams paired to compete in a final of four 15 minute quarters.

Glen Page’s father Ted, agreed to undertake the interchange job whilst we paid two local women who were club trainers in the FFL to assist us at Friday Night’s training and on the day. This proved a beneficial move.

Cardiff player, Dean Crotty who was in Wagga for the weekend volunteered to run water as did the General Manager.

We defeated the Riverina FL, Farrer FL and Hume FL consecutively so were unbeaten going into the final.

The side was well primed for the last game with an average but poor crowd in attendance at Maher Oval. Coach Wall brought Rawnsley into the game. Because of injury he had not played in the early games so he was fresh.

The local opinion was that our wins in the first three matches were a fluke appeared to be justified when we failed to kick a goal by half time whilst the opposition had five on the board. Some spectators left the ground expecting a white-wash.

Our president was with other league officials at half time when Graham Buchanan, the president of the RFL approached him and said “You had us worried Ian. Your boys have played well.” He had little to respond with. Graham Buchanan’s after match speech was very humble.

During the third term our side fared little better. Most just wanted to score a goal before the end of the game.

Then in the last term a remarkable feeling enveloped the side. Killarney Vale’s Clint Austerberry had told Luke Orton from the Cardiff Club that they (the team) could win the game. And that was it. The following is from notes taken by the League President during the game:

Second quarter: o Injuries didn’t help o Kicking poor o Umpiring decisions against us o The opposition were better in the air o Grimmond and Wold were defending well. Third Quarter: o Maurie turned on his left in play to score a behind o Gordon playing well o Ryan strong at CHF Fourth Quarter: o Umpiring decision go against us again. o Opposition missed from in front whilst attempting to play on o We had more of the play o Maurie used his body to out manoeuvre his opponent to goal o Orton kicked to Ryan who chipped to Austerberry who marked and goaled. o Hard work by Clarke to get the ball to Gibson who missed from a set shot. o A fresh Luke Rawnsley was very effective. o Monk marked on the forward flank. He kicked to Maurie who marked and goaled. o Page put a big hit on an opponent to allow his team mate to put the ball into attack. o Handball from Hillman to Monk then on to Maurie who marked and goaled o Krake out of the centre to Ryan who has marked on the fifty. He slots it through. We are a point in front.

There were major celebrations after the game and into the night. In a passionate address to the players after the match the president told the players to keep their jumpers! The trip home was probably over the top and a whip around was taken up to placate the bus driver.

The BDAFL named Clint Austerberry as their best for the carnival whilst the coach's trophy went to Cardiff’s Adam Clarke. Both had an outstanding carnival.

Final Match Details:

An after match function in the Rules Club was well celebrated with players and officials completely and justifiably immodest in their responses.

A local official said “Ian Granland has been coming down here for 30 years just waiting for this moment.” How true.

This win was very significant in helping to establish the league and football in general in our region to a higher place within the football world.

Our unexpected win saw six players selected in the training squad for the NSW Country Team which competed in a national carnival on the Gold Coast in July.

Their funding did not provide for players from our area to travel to training or, if selected, the eventual match.

We were able to source money from the Barassi Club and AFL(NSW/ACT) to assist with the these players expenses. Together with the BDAFL contribution the end cost to the league was minimal.

Clint Austerberry and Angus Darling were eventually selected in the NSW and both performed creditably during the series. Each being named as best in matches they were involved in.

We congratulate all six and particularly Clint and Angus for their achievements.

Senior Representative Coach’s Report I would like to thank and congratulate all those involved with the senior BDAFL rep team success in 2006.

The local newspapers certainly didn’t rate our chances with everyone expecting the BDAFL to run a distant fourth. No one can deny the result however they want to look at it, it was an outstanding effort.

Other teams were missing players, however they also play with some distinct advantages like home ground surroundings, support and all players being on paid contracts. We went into the game without key players as well – Bird, Kemp, McMahon, Simpson, McGrath, Kolb, to name a few, plus we lost our captain Dave Flynn in the first 5 minutes of the day.

The 2006 side had 13 new players come into the side from the previous year, and it was this large turnover that gave us an edge in enthusiasm and team spirit. 29 October, 2006 20

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

In the end we were without doubt, regardless of scoreboard results the best TEAM throughout the whole carnival, by a long way. This was no more evident than in each of the early games when we physically outplayed all three teams. We didn’t lose one game, had more scoring shots in all games and defeated the much fancied Riverina FL, twice!! The attack and intensity throughout the whole carnival was unsurpassed.

A key component to our success was the support throughout the whole day from assistant coaches Adam Dugan and Peter Harvey, Chairman of Selectors Rob Dixon and the thorough organisation from Garry Burkinshaw.

You couldn’t ask any more from a group of men who were asked to come together under these circumstances. As a coach you want your team to play to the plan and the players to give their best effort, well, like last year, we reached another level and then gave that little bit extra (ie: the 1% efforts) that only comes from a genuine TEAM.

As Ian Granland has said, “the result under these circumstances was a little piece of history and an experience that comes along very rarely”.

A special congratulations to the players asked to attend the combined NSW Country rep training in Wagga, and to Angus Darling and Clint Austerberry for making the team and performing so well on the Gold Coast.

The BDAFL as a league is certainly going from strength to strength each year. I encourage all clubs and players to continue to support rep footy in 2007. Congratulations again to all involved.

UNDER 18 REPRESENTATIVE GAME Under 18 Representative Match Weather – Raining BDAFL vs ACT @ Manuka Oval Sat 10 June 2006 BDAFL 2.1 3.1 3.4 4.7 (31) ACT 2.2 5.4 7.6 10.8 (68) Goals: BDAFL – Ian Baker 2, Nathan O’Donoghue 1, Elliott Lukes Best: Nathan O’Donoghue, Chris Gordon, Ben Burroughs, Ian Baker, Kris Wozniak, Tyrone Orford-Glapa Umpires: Phil Stone (Field) - NCCUA

The league decided to again play the ACT in an Under 18 representative match in Canberra.

Clubs were asked to nominate players from their number and the positions of coach, manager, trainer and runner were advertised throughout the league.

Some clubs approached the concept with gusto whilst others were rather ambivalent. We missed several good players because of some club’s lack of encouragement.

Training was held at Maneela Oval on two Sundays before the match.

The response to officials for the team was particularly poor and officials had to ask Michael Gray from the Cardiff Club to coach. The team manager and others were nominated but dropped out at the last minute leaving a very scant group of young officials to travel with the bus and chaperone the side on the Friday Night.

The league president decided on the morning of the trip to travel with the team to provide some additional supervision.

29 October, 2006 22

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

Accommodation was at the Forest Inn which comprised motel and apartment styled living. The league’s group was quartered in the apartments but spread over a large area with officials located a fair distance from the majority of the team.

Upon arrival the side had a light training run on the park opposite the accommodation. Following this they were taken to the adjacent Italian Club for dinner. Officials cautioned those players under 18 not to drink and those of age keep within the boundaries.

A very difficult situation arose where part of the group who could legally drink whilst others of a slightly younger age were not permitted. This appeared to create an atmosphere “I am 18 I can do what I want” by some of the boys, but not overly so and it is not the intention to over emphasise this point.

Following their meal the side walked the short distance back to the apartments ostensibly to watch television before bed. Those officials who remained with the team remained with some players in their rooms. Others in the rest of the rooms went unchecked.

Unbeknown to the officials some players had secreted alcohol in their luggage and others had left the accommodation in search of more alcohol.

This was all discovered 2 hours later when some players were found well affected by alcohol with bottles of spirits and beer in some, but not all rooms. All players were sent to their respective rooms and an attempt made to reconcile one player who was particularly affected. Quite a number had been drinking.

The players had been allocated to six or seven rooms spread across a fair distance so it was virtually impossible to monitor all their activities at one time. There were simply too many players in too many rooms and not enough adequate scope for supervision.

In any case and considering the nature of the trip it was considered that the players would not be so immature to act in the manner in which some did before the night of the game. How wrong this belief was but again, it was not all who of the group who acted in this way.

If there was going to be a problem it was considered it would be on the return bus trip and Vice President John McMahon had travelled by separate transport to Canberra on the Saturday morning to help in the supervision on the bus.

On the Friday Night, some players did not get to sleep until 3 or 4:00am.

In the morning it was found there had been damage to furniture in one of the rooms. After questioning two players admitted to this and upon inspection by the owners the league paid an additional $300 for repairs which was later recouped from those involved.

One player who was the worst affected was dropped from the team and ran water.

To the game and the facilities at Manuka were absolutely magnificent however the match was played in light rain and there was a poor crowd.

The game was a lead-up to the senior ACT v Qld match.

The Black Diamond side scored the first two goals through Nelson Bay's Ian Baker and were only a point down at the first change.

But from there is was all ACT. They handled the slippery conditions far better than the BDAFL side and held their marks whilst the locals for the most part fumbled and made numerous skill errors.

They failed to pick up their opponents when the ACT were in attack and were not hard enough at the ball. Compared to the opposition, their skill level was very ordinary although they did have their scoring opportunities, particularly in the last quarter.

Best for the league were Warners Bay pair, Nathan O'Donoghue when roving and captain, Chris Gordon.

A presentation was made in the rooms after the game and a drink and sandwiches were made available to the players in the pavilion.

The return bus trip was uneventful.

FINALS Again a four match final series was played. There have been suggestions of returning to a five week roster but the Board saw no value in it.

Additionally it was put that the first and second semi final be played on the one weekend but with the variation in weather it was decided to play the games over four weekends with the option of using the date for the first semi for any washed out games then doubling up the fist and second semi on the second weekend of the series. Thankfully this did not occur.

A decision was made very early in the year that the first and second semi finals and the grand final would be played at No. 1 Sportsground. The Preliminary Final would be played at Adelaide Street on the Central Coast.

This decision was taken for a number of reasons: The AFLGSJ – Newcastle wished to use No. 1 Sportsground on our preliminary final date for their grand final; The Board recognized the fact that the competition covers two geographical areas and because of that some finals should be played on the Central Coast. Lastly the league has few alternatives when it comes to using a ground where an admission charge can be levied.

The canteen, beer booth and gate were opened to clubs who wished to tender. It was very much considered that BDAFL clubs should be given the opportunity to operate this functions which can raise much needed funds. A levy of 12.5% was applied for canteen and booth sales whilst a commission of 20% was paid to the club/s which operated the gate.

Newcastle City FC catered for the first and second semi whilst the Lake Macquarie club operated the gate at the three No. 1 Sportsground games as well as operating the booth and canteen at the grand final. This venture made Lake Macquarie FC some very serious funds with their commission for just the gate at $2046.21.

On the Central Coast the Killarney Vale Club conducted the canteen and bar at the preliminary final whilst Gosford FC operated the gate. It was fortunate for the league that the games in this particular final had six different clubs participating which probably answers why a record gate was taken.

Admission charges for the final series were increased to $8 for adults, $3 for children and aged pensioners over 16 and cars $3. The Football Records were given away free.

The weather for the first two games was good although rain early in the week of the preliminary final saw officials thinking about a different venue. The weather held off and the sun and wind dried out the ground to produce a firm surface.

Rain on grand final day was incredible. Newcastle recorded the biggest downpour in a single September day for 100 years.

Rain in the under 18 match wasn’t too bad, it kept up at a steady pace in the first division game and was almost continuous in the Black Diamond Cup match.

29 October, 2006 25

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

League officials sought advice from the groundsman who informed them that if high tide occurred during the afternoon and the rain continued at the level it had reached then the water would not get away because the canal behind the grandstand was tidal.

The groundsman who was known to be very protective of the ground though made no suggestion of the game being stopped.

Water backed up onto the ground from the canal and at one stage covered an area on the oval from the point post at one end to the point post at the other end and across approximately one third of the surface. On the grandstand side boundary the water was ankle deep as officials witnessed water bubbling up through the drains on the spectator side of the fence. And yet at games end when the tide was receding the water flowed off the ground very quickly.

Few realised that once a game commences the decision to call it off rests with the umpires under the laws of the game. Remarkably there was no suggestion from them, the teams or club officials that the game should be terminated.

In reality though the conditions were so bad that should the umpires had reached a decision to call the game off, they would have been justified in doing so.

I doubt if we will ever see those conditions again. Ironically enough, before this match a meeting had been scheduled to consider the upgrading of drainage from the ground.

Despite all of this the crowd was reasonable. Cardiff’s Mick Ryan kicked his 100th goal for the season in the game.

We had invited all of the life members and sponsors and put on a generous function at half time and for the rest of the game in the Newcastle City Clubrooms. The Lord Mayor was in attendance and presented the Black Diamond Cup and premiership medals.

Frank Wozniak was organised as photographer for the day and he took a number of excellent photographs which will live as a memento of the day.

The BDAFL pays for a mobile phone, rental for home phone/fax, and Broadband Internet connection for the General Manager whilst a Mobile phone is provided for the President and also the Umpires Coach.

During the year the following equipment was purchased to improve the BDAFL operations:

- Laptop Computer for General Manager - Laser Printer - Scanner - Flash drive (small portable computer hard drive)

The BDAFL have an agreement with the Killarney Vale FC to store all the league’s gear and equipment in a room in their clubrooms, dedicated for our sole use, at $10 rent per week.

All the league’s meetings, workshops and Tribunal hearings were held at Swansea RSL and we are grateful to the club for their assistance.

SPORTING PULSE We had some alterations to the Sporting Pulse System this year on our request. Changes are difficult to apply because our understanding is that if a change is made for our league then this becomes common to the entire system and maybe a feature not wanted by some association say, in Western Australia, who is also using the programme. We need to follow up changes more succinctly in order that our needs are met.

The Sporting Pulse Competition Management System is an outstanding programme for our needs. It provides us with an excellent and open view of how the results and playing within out competition is evolving. The cost to the league for this is $1600 per annum.

The league still remains a benchmark in the football world in the manner in the way we conduct our business. The Board is dedicated to keeping pace with technology which provide our competition, clubs and players the best and most accurate reporting system available.

In the football season from April to September (incl.) our Sporting Pulse System had 295,873 hits. This averaged 49,312 hits per month with the highest in April of 59,086 with the lowest in September of 29,073.

This year the league had 829 players participate in the league.

A uniform Competition Management System should be top of the shopping list for the AFL and if we have to pay, so be it. We are paying Sporting Pulse.

CLUB WORKSHOPS At the beginning of the year the BDAFL again ran a number of courses.

The workshops were conducted by the President and General Manager and were conducted by way of Powerpoint Presentation.

A timekeeper’s course was scheduled for both Newcastle and Central Coast. Unfortunately lack of numbers resulted in the Newcastle course being cancelled with nine people completing the course on the Central Coast.

At the completion of the presentation all participants were required to complete an examination. It was pleasing to note that all participants passed and received their Graduation Certificates on the presentation night. A majority of those who completed the course were actively involved in timekeeping duties during the year.

The BDAFL also conducted workshops for club secretaries as well as club coaches.

The content of the secretary’s workshop was to explain in detail what was expected by clubs both on and off the field including by-law changes, match day presentation, match day paperwork requirements as well as general club requirements. Club Secretaries were also provided with an Operational Manual which outlined the administration requirements of the club.

A coaches induction was also held although the attendance was not as good as expected. Those who did attend were provided with an outline of what was required of a coach in the BDAFL both on and off the field. Umpires Coach Grant Godfrey attended and showed a DVD outlining the new rules and interpretations, which were introduced into the 2006 season.

All in attendance at these two gatherings found apparently them beneficial although as expected complaints were received regarding procedural requirements by those who were absent.

It is intended that these workshops will again be held in 2007.

A survey of the clubs revealed a lack of off-field support and the ability to raise funds were two of the main obstacles for clubs. With this in the mind the BDAFL organised a seminar on “Recruiting Volunteers and Fund Raising”. The seminar was conducted by the Dept of Sport & Rec with Ian Robilliard (CEO of Central Coast Academy of Sport & former National Basketballer) as the facilitator.

Unfortunately this seminar was very poorly patronised with only eight people in attendance representing four clubs. This was despite the 20 or more people from 10 clubs indicating that they thought the subjects important and would have some one in attendance.

Those who did attend found the seminar to be of particular value although the lack of personnel detracted from the seminar mainly because it was based on audience participation and workshops. The lack of patronage also reflected poorly on the league with the facilitator regularly commenting about the poor attendance.

ADMINISTRATION AWARD This year the BDAFL expanded the Administration Award to reward more clubs who complete their required tasks well rather than penalise financially those who failed. In the past only one club was rewarded.

29 October, 2006 31

Black Diamond AFL Inc 2006 Annual Report

A points system was introduced for tasks in the categories of Administration, Meetings, Football Record, Paperwork, Match Day Requirements, Umpiring and Representative Football.

Each club commenced the year with 400 points, with points added during the season for tasks where they exceeded expectations, whilst points were deducted for those where the clubs failed to meet the requirements.

All points accrued at the end of the season were converted into dollars (1 point = $1) with the equivalent payments forwarded to clubs who were in credit. Any club which exhausted in excess of 500 points was issued with a fine equivalent of $1 for each point in excess of 500.

The club with the most points was the awarded the Club of the Year and a cheque for $500. This club was not paid any bonus figure.

Most clubs embraced the new system and many administrators grizzled about losing points, some quite intensely so. Little did they realise that in the long scheme of things they were not being fined (as in previous seasons) but rather were losing notional points. Notwithstanding that, the know-how of administering games etc. climbed enormously and by season’s end few were repeating their mistakes and in fact match errors and associated infringements became negligible.

This year the BDAFL distributed $1,748.00 to 8 clubs as part of the Administration Award whilst it was pleasing to note that no fines, apart from those relating to unregistered players were issued.

Final Points Table is as follows:

CLUB POINTS 1 Cardiff 509 2 Killarney Vale 299 3 Newcastle City 288 4 Gosford 283 5 Lake Macquarie 168 6 Warners Bay 147 7 Singleton 61 8 Wyong Lakes 2 9 Woy Woy Peninsula -71 10 Nelson Bay -35 11 Terrigal Avoca 0

MERCHANDISING Cougar Sportswear were again awarded the contract to supply the garments for all BDAFL Gear and in exchange the BDAFL would receive $1,000 Sponsorship together with one free set of representative gear, an arrangement worth approximately $1,500.00 to the league. In addition to this the clubs also received a 5% discount.

The pricing of the gear was very competitive with jumpers costing the clubs $39.90, shorts $13.75 and socks $4.40, after the 5% discount. These prices were unchanged from 2005.

In 2005 the BDAFL took out a two year agreement with Burley Sekem to provide footballs to the league. In addition to the attractive price to clubs of $68.00 (plus GST) per red football they also provided two panels on the balls to use for advertising together with a rebate of 10% of our sales. This resulted in the league receiving 15 free footballs for the year which were used in the finals. The advertising panels included the BDAFL Logo as well as the Panthers Newcastle Logo.

This year the BDAFL turned over $38,918 in retail sales (merchandising) with a return to the league of $4,068 plus 15 free footballs.

Both of the agreements mentioned above are now expired and the BDAFL will actively seek suppliers to provide the best deal for both the clubs and the league in terms of quality, price, product suitability, delivery times and sponsorship.

BENCHMARKING 2006 saw clubs complete a Benchmarking survey on how they performed off the field. The survey included such things as income, expenditure, player registration, sponsorship etc. The information received was collated and then summarised. The summarised result was then returned to the clubs to enable them to compare their results to the rest of the league. It is intended that this survey will be completed in future years.

Summarised results for 2005 survey were as follows:

CARLTON DRAUGHT Earlier in the year the president and general manager held talks with the key figures at the Foster’s Group Offices, Newcastle.

As a result the company agreed to supply one carton of Carlton Draught to each Player of the Match in each round. This was very well accepted by players.

Also, product was made available for the representative team, a Barassi Club Function, the Medal Night and Grand Final Luncheon. In addition, Foster’s Australia Regional Business Development Manager, Ron Oeser made available a VB tagged Can Fridge and product for the players judged as the Carlton Draught Player of the Year together with 10 cartons of Carlton Draught each to the Black Diamond Cup Grand Finalists and product to two of the clubs which conducted liquor booths during the final series.

This commitment was an outstanding gesture and one which I speculate has endeared the people involved with the league to Carlton Draught and Foster’s Australia product in general.

The league’s thanks and appreciation are extended to Ron Oeser and Michael Ritoli.

THE FOOTBALL RECORD Again the league produced a weekly Football Record.

The coloured cover was pre-printed with a space for the round, date and match which the General Manager printed on a laser printer.

Clubs were again asked to contribute notes which were placed adjacent to their team list.

A cost of $1 was printed on the front however with each club paying a levy of $450 clubs had the option of selling or giving them away. Most gave them away.

The publication was edited by Erin Cotter who would email a .pdf file of the edition to the General Manager each Tuesday Night. In turn he would lodged a copy with Officeworks, Gosford on Wednesday Morning which, once printed and collated was collected that afternoon, sorted and boxed by the General Manager into home club lots and couried to the house of a home club official on the Friday.

At times there were hick-ups with the delivery or the club official not realising the delivery had been made but it worked in 95% of the cases. Home clubs were issued 50 copies each.

Officeworks provided a 5% discount for the inclusion of an advertisement in the Record.

The league now binds two copies of the total season’s issues as a record of the league’s and club’s activities through the respective season. It also sends another lot of copies to the NSW State Library which become available to the general public.

Whilst there is a reasonable effort in publishing the Football Record the end result is a tremendous vehicle for the league and clubs to push their cause and a wonderful effort to those concerned in it’s publication.

Thanks goes to Erin for the many hours spent in preparing the Record for publication each week.

HISTORY OF THE GAME WITHIN THE REGION

The league president is attempting to piece together a history of the game in the area and particularly in Newcastle.

With the game on the Central Coast only 34 years old, it is relatively easy to document the progress of the game there but in Newcastle where history of the game which started in the late nineteenth century and more permanently since 1948, it’s place in history has been neglected is a little more difficult to recollect.

Many of those pioneers who kick started the game after the war have passed and so we are left to gather the pieces.

It is not all lost. There are still a number of stalwarts who have an intense interest in the game and have vital material concerning it’s origins. We hope to collect that information and document it for the sake of history.

It is so easy to let the memories fade and so difficult to re-ignite the flame.

NORTHERN HEAT – 2006 REVIEW

The inaugural year of the TPP structure was a significant and challenging one for many reasons. Significant because it heralded a massive change in how young AFL talent was promoted. Never before had the AFL invested such resources in a true talent pathway of this magnitude whereby reaching every corner of this vast state, through the philosophies and age groups as shown below.

PHILOSOPHY and AIMS

To provide an effective structured and organized player pathway in the transition from junior to senior football and in doing so provide the opportunity for identified players to maximize their potential and play at the highest level possible.

To provide the opportunity for players to nominate for the AFL National Draft and have players drafted and competing successfully at AFL senior level.

To provide senior clubs across NSW and the ACT with better prepared players and in so doing improve the standard profile of local senior levels of football

To promote AFL throughout the regions and in doing assist the development of our game.

To provide an environment that balances each player’s football development with his or her educational, social and family responsibilities. To provide welfare structure that caters for the development of personal, social and life skills.

To integrate the AFL NSW/ACT TPP with the rest of the football community and to complement development programs.

2006 Local Initiatives & Business Concept

• Divide NSW/ACT into 6 regionsZones for for TPP TPP Purposes Purposes • Common Structure, Function, Resourcing, Program & Delivery FRANCHISE ZONES REGIONS • Parallel Programming for Age groupings • Systemised Delivery and pathways into State and AFL Programs

• 300 Talented Players competing Regionally for State Selection • Psychological & Physical Profiling Initiatives • Extensive use of technology & outside resources (AFL Recr/CHISM) 15/16’S/18’S16’S & 18’S LIVE IN • Player Education & Individual Programming • Coach/Umpire Education • Media & Sponsorship Opportunities • DIRECT Alignment with Apprenticeship Program

• Direct Link with school programs & competitions both AFL/ non AFL TALENT ID • Measures to draw talent from other sports • Incentives and structures for talented athletes from other sports to choose and embrace AFL

Challenging because NSW/ACT was sliced into six zones, with each zone bringing talented AFL players together from within geographic boundaries to compete in State Championships from Under 13 through to Under 18. Zones were Riverina/MIA Rebels, Southern Stingrays, ACT Cats, Sydney South Pigeons, Sydney North Starz and the Northern Heat.

Each age group has higher stakes when the carnivals are complete. Below is the Talented Player Pathway program and outcomes from Under 13 to Under 18 through to Senior football and AFL Draft opportunities.

CLUB/SCHOOL FOOTBALL FUTURE STARS

As the name suggests, the Northern Heat combined talent from Central Coast, Newcastle, Hunter Valley, , Far North Coast and the Central West. Geographically, half the state and logistically, very challenging.

Not to be deterred the Heat were hungry to show the rest of the State, and especially our city cousins, that we can play the game north of the Hawkesbury. Although the scorecards at the end of each series showed few wins, the Northern Heat fought each battle tenaciously and commanded respect from every other zone.

Some of the Heat representatives were chosen for higher duties but all fostered lifelong friendships and an unforgettable experience. I am certain that all players who wore the Heat guernsey, returned to their club a better and more developed player and were able to pass on their learnings and experiences to their family, peers and clubmen.

Obviously, without the generous support of the BDAFL, Central Coast Juniors, Newcastle Juniors, CWAFL, AFL North Coast and AFL Mid North Coast, the Northern Heat could not operate and a huge word of thanks to these organisations. To the many wonderful volunteers who helped organise and participate in training and trial games, ran canteens, ran water, cooked BBQ’s, opened dressing sheds, sent letters, filled databases…..the list goes on and on……….the biggest thank you of all.

To the parents, grandparents, busdrivers and friends who ensured the players got to training and games, thank you so much for the giving of your valuable time. It can be a major imposte on the parents to give their sons these opportunites. To the coaching staff whose insight into the game and wish to help and guide the players was at times, extroadinary and I thank you for all your input into the development of the players.

And lastly, to all the players across the zone in all age groups who participated in the program and whose courageous deeds have started a culture within the Northern Heat , a big, big thanks. Your work ethic was tremendous and willingness to learn was outstanding. I wish you all the best in your football endeavours.

NCC UMPIRES’ ASSN This year the Umpires’ Association was accepted into the league as a special group.

They are now voting members and are considered in most terms in the same context as a club. They are well run and have a firm and steady membership. We encourage the soul and integrity of the Association to continue since it’s humble beginnings in 1951.

THOSE TO REPRESENT This year the league had three of it’s number chosen to represent and one to go on to be selected in an All Australian Side:

Craig Bird Clint Austerberry Angus Darling

BDAFL Young Footballer of the Year, Craig Bird was selected in the NSW Under 18 Team and subsequently in the All Australian Under 18 Side. In addition to that Craig also was named NSW Best Player of the carnival. Craig also represented Australia in the Internaional Rules series against Ireland and also played a number of games with the Sydney Swans Reserves Grade side.

Both Clint Austerberry and Angus Darling were chosen in the Australian Football Country Championships which were played on the Gold Coast in July.

All three are very worthy competitors and their selections justified by the outstanding performances they displayed whilst playing in the Black Diamond AFL.
