For the third year in a row, the team went undefeated, won the outdoor track championship in the ODAC, and had its coach, "Doc" Jopson, named Coach of the Year. Duane Harrison set a school record in rhe long jump and high hurdles, and Joe Freeland set a record in the shot put. Other setting records were "Pee Wee" Stevenson in the discus and Corey Bunting in the high JUffip. This year's team totaled 100 points or more in meets several times and its undefeated record of 8-0 never really was threatened. Duane Harrison qualified for the NCAA Division 111 national meet in the triple )Ump. Track / 65 TENNIS Tony "Jam" Vincenc shows that mtal concentration is the name of rhe game. The team finished with a 5-5-1 record including its first victory ever against Hampden-Sydney. The year's top golfers were Keith Marshall, Tom Martin, Dick Emery, and Greg Curtice. All of che players were sophomores and freshmen who will be returning co che cerun next year. This has been the best team effort I've been associated with," commented Coach John Spencer about his 1980 ODAC Football Champions. The Eagles demonstrated great team effort as they used numerous big plays in claiming a 4-1 conference record and the first championship in the history of BC football. The Eagles began their season with a 13-6 victory over St. Pauls, followed by 24-0 walloping of Maryville. The next three games were not so pleasant, losing all three. After the third loss, the Eagles were able to curn the season around. Washington & Lee provided the next vicrory as the Eagles survived the Generals' 20 point fourth quarter, and Charlie Gunter stopped the Generals' two-point conversion just shy of the goal line with 27 seconds left in the game. To clinch the ODAC title, the Eagles defeated defending champion Randolph· Macon 27-25. The Eagles finished their season with a 34-31 win over Catholic University.
