Vice-Chancellor‟s Report Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi founded by the philanthropist, industrialist Late Shri B.M. Birla in 1955, attained the status of a Deemed to be University in the year 1986. The rich legacy of the founder has been carried forward by his son Padma Bhushan Late Shri. G. P. Birla and his grandson, the present Chairman of our Board of Governors, Shri C. K. Birla through continued emphasis on academic excellence and contribution to nation building. BIT Mesra, by virtue of the quality of its academic programmes, has consistently been ranked amongst the leading technical Institutes of the country. The Institute offers academic programmes in 17 disciplines in the main Mesra campus and has 626 faculty members and over 12,000 students spread across various campuses The Institute has taken many initiatives to strengthen and expand the Teaching – Learning environment and to generate career opportunities for the students in reputed organizations. Some of these initiatives are the G P Birla Scholarship Scheme, Best Student‘s Project Award, Inter Hostel Indoor Sports Award and a strong campus placement programme. A brief report on salient activities of the Institute, undertaken during the year 2018-19 follows. 1. Board of Governors: Key decisions regarding development of the institute which were taken by the BOG are listed below. Revised UG and PG curricula conforming to Outcome-Based Education (OBE)/Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and revised Ph.D. Ordinance have been made operational in the AY 18-19. 9 UG students participated in Immersive Summer Research Experience (ISRE) at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago and 3 at Carnegie Melon University (CMU) with equal sharing of expenses by BIT, BIT Mesra Alumni Association-North America (BITMAA-NA) and the participants The 7th CPC stands fully implemented. Arrears of 7th CPC stand fully paid. 7 distinguished academics/researchers have been inducted as Adjunct Professor/Adjunct Fellow. Institute Research Fellowship (IRF) provision matching those from CSIR, UGC, etc. has been implemented w.e.f. SP-2018 session. Additional solar power capacity of 700 KW is deployed to bring up the installed solar power capacity in the campus to 1 MW. Upgradation of existing 11KVA electrical sub-station to 33 KVA sub-station is under implementation 2.0 Student Placements The Campus Recruitment Programme for students demonstrates the confidence of the Industry in the quality of graduates of BIT Mesra. In Academic Year 2018-19, as many as 108 recruiters visited the campus and generated a total of 614 offers including 190 offers for internship made by different companies. Numbers of Internship offers across different sectors of the industry. Major recruiters ranging from Investment Banks to Analytics & Consulting, Automobile to Heavy Engineering and Infrastructure, IT Product to IT Services visited the campus for placement. 24 companies have visited BIT Mesra for the first time this year and the recruiters who visited last year for the first time have continued this year, and the process yielded satisfactory results. Several meritorious students have received multiple offers. The BE students of Mesra Campus with a total batch strength of 666 and a total of 554 eligible students, received a total of 398 offers and 380 students have been placed this year. Considering the percentage placement of eligible students, 88% students from BE Computer Science, 73% from BE Electronics & Communication & 94% from BE Information Technology, 56% of the BE Mechanical Engineering, 63% of BE Production Engineering and 62% of BE Electrical Engineering students got offers from different sectors. Likewise, 65%, 52%, 44% and 38% of students from Chemical, Chemical & Polymer, Civil and Bio-Engineering respectively have got placed. Major Recruiters were Adobe, Microsoft, Salesforce, Amazon, Amazon Development Center, Intuit, Goldman Sachs, Walmart Labs, Vm Ware, Visa, SocieteGenerale, HP, Samsung R&D, Accenture, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Vedanta, HCL Technologies. The Average Salary for various programmes is B.E - INR 10.56 L, M.E - INR 5.8 L, M.B.A - INR 4.3 L, M.C.A - INR 5.28 L, B. Pharm - INR 3.9 L, M. Pharm - INR 4.37 L & IMSc – INR 6.2 L. GP BIRLA SCHOLARSHIP AND OTHER INITIATIVES • It is my pleasure to mention that during the period GP Birla Scholarships worth INR 2.25 Crore were awarded, and INR 37.16 Lakhs have been provided to fund the best BE & ME Projects. 4. ACADEMIC & RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: • CBCS Course Structure has been implemented for all UG and PG courses at BIT Mesra and its extension centers. • Dr. Deepak Kumar has successfully completed his Post-Doctoral Research from Aalto University, Finland from July-December 2018. • Mr. Subrat Kumar Swain has been selected for Ph.D. Programme with a scholarship at Kyungpook National University, South Korea and will be joining in Feb. 2019 • More than 75% of the Programmes being offered by the Institute are accredited by NBA. • Dr. D. K. Mohanta has been named as Program Committee Member for INTELLI 2017, The Sixth International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Applications, 2018, Nice, France and 31st Canadian Conference on Computer and Electrical Engineering (CCCE18), Quebec City, Canada, 2018 • Industrial Visit to Jindal Steel & Power Limited, Patratu was organized for ME Students of Department of EEE on 12th Dec.2018 • Ms. Varsha Singh joined as DST Woman Scientist, under the mentorship of Dr. Padmini Padmanabhan • Dr. D. M. Pandey- Organizing Committee Member in 3rd International Conference on Molecular Biology & Nucleic Acids-2018 scheduled at Toronto, Ontario, Canada from August 27-28, 2018 5. R&D ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE The Institute is committed to high-end R & D activities and supports it through Seed Money, Institute Fellowships and Travel Grants for National & International seminars, symposia, and conferences. During the period of March 2018 to Feb 2019, 308 faculty members were supported by the Institute to attend National Seminars, and many faculty members were supported financially to attend International Conferences. 44 Ph.D. scholars are being provided with Institute Research Fellowships. The high Level of Research conducted at BIT Mesra has led to grants from National / International agencies like UGC, CSIR, DST, DAE, BRNS, ISRO, DRDO, ARDB, DBT, AICTE, NAMPET, C-DAC, ICAR, Govt. Of Jharkhand, BMBF through sponsored projects and consultancies. This has resulted in an improvement in the number of citations of our publications. These include 21 national and 1 International Conferences/ Seminars/ Symposia/ Workshops which were organized in BIT, Mesra, 3 Entrepreneurship Awareness camp organized by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and 10 National and 4 International Conferences/ Seminars/ Symposia/ Workshops organized by BIT, Jaipur. Delegates from BIT, Mesra were invited in more than 80 national and 12 international level Conferences/ Seminars/ Symposia/ Workshops. Some of them are: The Department of Space Engineering and Rocketry organized the 32nd National Convention of Aerospace Engineers jointly with the Jharkhand State Centre of the Institution of Engineers, India during October 27-28, 2018 Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering organized a workshop on Mine Slope Stability and Mine Environment Safety on March 21-22, 2018 Department of Chemical Engg. Organized Workshops on ―Industrial Process Simulation‖ on 16-20 May 2018 Department of Physics organized Science Academies‘ Refresher Course on ―Experimental Physics‖ on 14-29 June 2018 TEQIP has supported to organize, International Conference on Computational Intelligence (ICCI 2018) on 10.12.18 to 11.12.18, Workshop on Outcome-based Education on 18 -19 March 18, Workshop on Industrial Process Simulation on 16-20 May 18, Workshop on Lab safety: Pitfall & Remedies‖ by ICT Mumbai on 17 December 2018, Entrepreneurship Development Cell. Program Flagship Fest E-Summit 19 on 19.01.19 to 20.01.19, Workshop sessions on ―Grab Your Opportunity‖ by Mr. Waghmare under Twinning program with ICT Mumbai on 28.01.19 to 01.02.19, Mock document verification for NBA visit by ICT Mumbai on 05.11.18 to 06.11.18, Lecture series on ―Particle Physics‖ and ―Ceramics‖ by MR. Paresh Salame& Mr. Mohan Narayan under Twinning program with ICT Mumbai on 28.01.19 to 28.01.19 Summer school on Wireless Communication using Network Simulation tool was organized at BIT, Jaipur campus, Jaipur from 14 - 18 May 2018 Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp was organized at BIT, Jaipur campus, Jaipur funded by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India on 3 - 5 October 2018 One day Seminar on Documentary Film Making and Screening of International Animation Films Was organized at BIT, Jaipur campus, Jaipur funded by Jaipur International Film Festival (JIFF) on 21Jan, 2019. Internationally acclaimed personality, HarikrishnaAnandan, from Switzerland, Hussain Nuri, from Iran, ArzuQaderi, from U.K., Amr Gamal, from Yemen, shared their knowledge.
