Working to improve the quality of life for disabled children, young people and their families in City and Southern

O March 2020

Umbrella are absolutely delighted to have achieved both the DerbySeptember City and Derbyshire 2018 Dignity Campaign Bulletin Award This very special award recognises how Umbrella’s work promotes dignity and respect. As a champion for dignity in care we ensure that people who access our services have a great experience for all aspects of their support needs.

Umbrella would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of the activity support workers, office staff and managers for all of their dedication, hard work and input to ensure we achieved the award...which we are so very proud of!

There were lots of different categories of care covered in the award, but one area Umbrella excelled in was promoting choice and independence. Umbrella ensures the young adults we support are involved in planning their daily activities, offering a personalised service that develops individual skills and independence. We are delighted to share some pictures below which show a snippet of the support we deliver to the fantastic young adults accessing our services….

TEAM

This month, our young adults have been working hard on their fitness, exercise and well-being with the help of their support workers, some new equipment and visits to our regular accessible groups. As you can see, the Friday group have really enjoyed the introduction of our new gym balls and have been starting the day with a short exercise session before their weekly visits to Deda. Beth has also been working hard at the gym each week with her 1:1 support worker. A healthy body helps a healthy mind and we are going to continue to work with the young adults to promote their health and fitness.

INDE Last month, the INDE group celebrated all things red in honour of St. Valentine. They painted their own plant pots using different shades of red before potting a beautiful plant into it. For lunch, the group cooked a very tasty Spaghetti Bolognese followed by a fabulous strawberry cheesecake. After all their hard work, they relaxed with an afternoon of bingo.

What’s happening in Children's Activities

Here at Umbrella we are overwhelmed with the support that we keep receiving with the Global’s Make Some Noise Project!

We had a fantastic February half term, where the older group enjoyed a session at Clip ‘n’ Climb as well as a Woodwork Workshop! The younger group enjoyed a session with Jumping Clay and made some glitter jars!

We are now busy planning the Easter Holiday Trips. Please keep an eye out for the upcoming dates.

If you are interested in this service, please call our Single Point of Access on 01332 785658 and ask for a referral to Becky Morrison.

The service is tailored towards children with mild/moderate disabilities. An, All About Me Form is required to be completed, to identify if the support is suitable for the child or young person and whether we can meet the individuals identified needs.

Please note, we cannot offer transport for this service.

In other news…..

We are sadly losing our Global’s Make Some Noise Co-Ordinator, Becky Owen at the beginning of March. We have appointed a new Co-ordinator, Becky Morrison who will take over the role. Becky has worked with Umbrella before as Children’s Co-ordinator and re-joined us again recently as an Activity Support Worker. She will continue to support some of our young people alongside this role. If you have any queries about Global during the transition period in March, please call Ann on 01332 521229 .

Other information

The Centre for Research in Autism and Education and Ambitious about Autism would like you to take part in an online survey about the post-16 educational experiences of young people on the autism spectrum. In 2011, Ambitious about Autism published a report calling for a legal right to educational support for young disabled people until they are 25. This was achieved through the Children and Families Act in 2014, but we don't know the impact this had on young autistic people or their families. This research team wants to hear about as many people's experiences as possible to learn what has been working well and what needs to improve. Who can take part? Young autistic people (between the ages of 16 and 25) and Parents/carers of young autistic people (between the ages of 16 and 25) To take part, click the button below. The survey takes between 30 to 60 minutes. https://uclioe.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6KjRIdDu4MDS08B

Umbrella are excited to be invited along to the Service User Involvement Group at Derby University which will support learning disability nursing students. The event is on 29th April from 1.30pm—3.00pm at the Kedleston Road campus, DE22 1GB.

Young adults over the age of 18 can get involved in many different volunteering opportunities alongside the lecturers and students. Umbrella are hoping to work with the university by exploring their volunteering opportunities and supporting young adults who would like to take apart in this fantastic opportunity. It’s a great chance to develop skills and if you would be interested in attending but want more information, please drop Joanne Skellern a message [email protected] . Rhian from Umbrella will be going along to the event. If you currently access Umbrella Adults Services and would like to go along with Rhian to get more information, please contact her on 01332 521229 or [email protected]
