One hundred and fifty printed Derbyshire Parish Registers. Edited by W. P. W. PHILLIMORE, M.A., B.C.L. AND R. JOWETT BURTON, M.A. (Rector of Hughley, Salop.) VOL. I. /I M^i/^ ILon&on: Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., 124, Chancery Lane. 1906. PREFACE. This Volume, forming the first, it may be hoped, of a series containing the whole of all extant Derbyshire Registers down to the year 1812, includes the Marriage Registers of thirteen parishes. The need there is to preserve the contents of our ancient Registers from the risks of fire, theft, forgery, and natural decay is well illustrated by this volume. The Registers should commence in 1538, the date when they were established at the instance of Thomas Cromwell, yet it will be seen three only commence earlier than the seventeenth century. i37^9089 The Editors propose to continue this series of Derbyshire Registers in volumes similar to this. They will be very glad to receive offers of assistance, since it is only by volunteer help that it is possible to print our ancient parish registers. Genealogists, not only in Derbyshire but throughout the English world, will appreciate this systematic attempt to .render available the information contained in parish registers, which to most students are at present almost sealed books. These printed copies will preserve the information they contain, even though the originals be lost by carelessness, theft or fire. Moreover, registers in the past have been sometimes tampered with for wrongful purposes, as was done in the Shipway pedigree case, in which forged entries* both early and late, were inserted in several Gloucestershire parish registers. In several instances where registers have been printed, as a consequence, volumes which had been supposed to be lost have been discovered and subsequently printed, thus shewing how desirable it is to make public by means of the printing press these ancient records. The first seven marriage registers were abstracted by Mr. Burton. The remaining registers were undertaken by the — Rev. W. Lilley, the Rev. F. Brodhurst, the Rev. A. M. Auden and the Hon. Frederick Strutt. To these and to Mr. Hugh Browne the Editors desire to express their thanks for their help given in this work. The names of the clergy by whose kind permission these records are printed are mentioned under their respective parishes. Every care has been exercised in the transcription of the copy, and in many cases the proofs have been collated with the original registers. Still errors may have crept in, from the difficulty of distinguishing certain letters, such as c and t, u, m, n, and i, K and R, O and C, etc. It must also be borne in mind that the existing early registers are them- selves but transcripts from the original paper registers made under the order of 1597. The entries, have been reduced to a common form, and the following abbreviations adopted : w. ^widower or widow. p.=of the parish of. s.=^pinster, single woman or son of. dioc.=in the diocese of. b.^bachelor or single man. co.=in the county of. d.=daughtei- of. /ic.=mariiage licence. It must be remembered that these printed abstracts of marriage registers are not "evidence" in the technical sense. Certified copies must still be obtained when evidence of a marriage is needed for proving a pedigree in a court of law, or when registering it at Heralds' College. For such certifi- cates application must be made to the clergy in charge of the original registers. Ultimately, no doubt, the baptisms and burials will find their way into print, but it seems expedient to issue the weddings first, as it is done in the present series. No index is issued with the volume, as the Editors believe that it is better to print as many registers as possible, and for the present to defer index- making until the registers still in manuscript are placed beyond the risk of loss. Note.—The oldest volume of the Registers of Dale Abbey is now in a very dilapidated state from damp and ill-usage. It is of paper and has no cover, and the pages are much frayed at the edges. The entries seem to begin in several different places, probably owing to the book having been re-sewn at a later date. There are 24 leaves, and the first two have been eaten through the centre by mice. The measurements are 15 inches by 6 inches. The Marriage entries are chiefly made separate from the others—the greater part at the beginning of the book, a few pages at the end, and some are amongst the Baptisms and Burials. Vol. II. is of parchment and in a state of good preservation. The cover, which is also parchment, is somewhat dilapidated. The measurements are 12 ins. by 7I ins., and there are 16 leaves. The Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials were entered promiscuously. Vol. III. is a thick /)fl/>(jr volume bound in parchment. Measurements 16 ins. by 6J ins. At one end thirty leaves have been used for register- ing Baptisms and Burials, and at the other end thirty for Marriages, one for the entries of the births of members of one family. One baptismal entry ( if not more ) has been cut out of the book. These entries have been extracted by the Rev. R. J. Burton, late Curate of Stanton-by-Dale. They are printed by permission of the Rev.W. Fox, Rector of Stanton-by-Dale, and Chaplain of Dale Abbey.
