e BelvedereSummer Edition 2018 | AMDG NEWS A WORD FROM THE HEADMASTER

hey say the secret of getting ahead is getting started and while some may think summer is a time when students and Tschool stops, that is a misconception. The summer is one of the busiest times and presents us with an opportunity to develop and grow in so many different ways. Summer is upon us and the fine weather is welcomed by all, except those sitting the Junior and Leaving Certificate! Hopefully all will have achieved their best results to date in these exams. Those students going into Sixth and Third year need to reflect on their summer results and do some study over the coming weeks. Developing the self-discipline to learn independently is an essential part of maturing as a student. Poetry Mock Interviews

Poetry students aced their Mock Interviews this year. On the run up to the interview evening, students spent time researching a college course of interest, preparing their CVs and cover letters and brushing up on their interview technique. The feedback from our Maynooth Award interviewers was overwhelmingly positive. Some wanted to start recruiting straight away - well done lads! The Business Studies Department was delighted to receive an Excellence in Junior Certificate Business Studies award from Maynooth University recently. The award was given to recognise the school’s contribution to teaching and promotion of excellence in the discipline, while also acknowledging all students who achieved an ‘A’ grade in their 2017 Higher Level Business Studies Junior Certificate exam.

Chinese Cookery by Ben Whyte (Rhetoric Loyola)

Cooking with Miss Lu and the class was an unforgettable experience! I, along with two others, made Chinese dishes the native way. Rice paste stuck everywhere as we made delightful dumplings in the school’s Home Ec. Food Lab. Miss Lyons watched with fascination as we learned how to shape and stuff dumplings in various shapes. To complement our savoury snacks we made black bean paste dumplings, a sweet treat I couldn’t get enough of! Our guest chef was eager to show us the culinary side to China. It was a cultural experience as much as it was culinary and we learnt some nifty phrases too. It was a wonderful experience on the whole and one which I hope will be one of many cultural experiences between Belvedere and the Confucius Institute. Xièxie lăoshī Lu!

RUGBY

Well done to our JCT and SCT teams on their hard-fought campaigns this year. It wasn’t meant to be this year but both squads showed a huge amount of dedication, commitment and sportsmanship throughout. This was reflected both in their preparation (going so far as to sweep the snow off the pitch so they could train) to their conduct on the pitch. As SCT Captain David Hawkshaw put it “to have the good days you have to suffer the bad days as well”.

A Letter from a First Year reflecting on his first year in choir Junior Choir sing By Matthew Nolan EX for Sir Anthony O’Reilly

The Junior Choir performed at Old Belvedere RFC on Saturday 21st April for a naming ceremony where Sir Anthony O’Reilly (OB 1954) was honoured. It was a most glorious day, clear blue skies and sun beating down. The boys sang their hearts out, behaved impeccably and did themselves and Belvedere proud!

ack in September of 2017, Fran called all the new Elements B students to the Lecture Theatre for a “trial run” at choir. She had us singing about bananas, kiwis and lots of other weird things, but it had us all laughing. From then, I knew I wanted to be in the choir. The first day was a bit strange, because no one knew anyone at all, and no one knew any of the songs. As the weeks went on people started to leave, but a group of about 37 of us stayed on and became great friends. My highlights of the year were definitely singing in the RDS and placing 2nd in the Feis Ceoil Junior Choir competition, singing for Sir Anthony O’Reilly, performing in the Musical Evening, and definitely all the treats that Fran made us during the year! If I had to choose one low point, it would have to be the time that Fran brought us all in cookies, and took them home again because we were being too noisy! Another big highlight was the last day of choir, when Ruaidhrí and Fran brought us bowling in Blanchardstown. It was such a fun way to end the year! Throughout the year, I have made so many friends and have made lots of memories through the choir, and I will definitely keep it up next year!

12 Spotlight From Belvedere Vice-Captain to Students’ Union President By Niall Behan, OB 2013

It goes without saying that I already owe so much to Belvedere College SJ. Within the bricks and mortar on Great Denmark Street lies a constantly evolving bedrock which acts so tirelessly to shape and educate the youth within. The staff align so strongly to the mission and purpose of the College and without them I know I’d now have different outlooks, prospects and key strengths and abilities. Last year I was delighted to be elected President of the DCU Students’ Union after a hard fought campaign against four other pupils and staff who live to the mantra “Men journey was the lighting of a fire against candidates. 16 Development Development News Dear All, As I write, our students are sitting the state exams in facilities provided by the generosity of parents and past pupils. The builders are working late into the evening to ensure that an excellent dining facility will be ready for our students in September. Cabra is benefitting from a complete refurbishment and the construction of new dressing rooms. None of this would be possible without your support. We recently passed the €6,000,000 mark in our fundraising campaign. This is an incredible achievement, made possible by your generosity, sacrifice and support. As many of you are aware, we are in the early stages of launching our new Masterplan for the College. It is exciting and challenging and the end result will be of great benefit to students. I cannot thank our supporters enough for the faith that you continue to show in the College. As I have written previously, without your financial support, the opportunities that are available to our students – and the opportunities that will be available to Belvedere students in the future – simply would not be possible. Similarly, without your support in other ways – by participating in our student-mentoring programme, by giving career talks to our classes, and by supporting our co-curricular programme, many of our students would miss out on wonderful opportunities to develop as students and as young men. I would also like to share with you the various opportunities that we have had to meet and engage with so many of our supporters, past pupils and friends over the last twelve months. Gathering together reminds us of our shared values and vision of education, and improves communication between the College and the wider Belvedere Community. Our past pupil reunions in Boston and New York were hugely successful, as were the many that were hosted at the College; in November, we hosted 400 OBs in the O’Reilly Theatre for An Evening €6,125,000 With Joe Schmidt; we were privileged to join in the celebrations of Total Pledged To Date the Belvedere Union Business Lunch and Annual Dinner; we also had (2013-Present) the pleasure of being guests at the very impressively attended annual Ladies Lunch (which generously yielded €15,500 for the Social Diversity 11 Programme); and, finally, we recently joined almost 40 of our UK Six-Figure Gifts based OBs for a Jesuit Schools Business Lunch in London. It is always a pleasure to learn more about what our former students are doing and achieving, and we look forward to more opportunities to engage with 319 you in the next year. Most years the PA will attempt to use the money kindly donated by parents to purchase something for the boys which will last long beyond the year in question. In previous years the PA has made significant financial contributions towards the cashless payment system, bike racks etc. This year the Committee decided to support the College in its drive to become more environmentally friendly and will purchase all boys in the College in 2018/2019 a re-useable metal water bottle, branded with the College crest. In addition, the PA will fund the installation of several new water fountains around the College and the refurbishment of some existing fountains. As we have all seen in the press recently, the oceans are littered with plastic, so removing single-use water bottles is an important step in the College’s eco journey. We strongly believe that students will understand better how simple changes can have significant impacts with this initiative. This will be a multi-year project as we piggy-back the College refurbishment programme when adding in the new water fountains.
