IN THIS ISSUE A WORD FROM THE HEADMASTER

BELVEDERE BEAT (1-9) I hope you enjoy the Newsletter. I want to thank the editorial team of Anne Bacon, Maressa O’Brien-Raleigh and all who contributed for their hard work and commitment. I also want to thank Trevor Dunne, for designing the Newsletter, Christmas card and ecard. Thanks also to Michael Marangos who filmed the Carol Service, to the Choir led by Ruaidhrí Ó Dálaigh and Frances Stoker Phelan, Choir Directors, and to Louise Curtin, Daniel FEATURES (10-16) Dunne and Emily White who accompanied the students in the Carol Service.

It has been an incredibly busy term and I want to thank all staff, students and parents for their generosity of spirit in “It was then we discovered that those on ensuring that there is such depth to the the ‘other’ side were not the savage educational experience we offer as a barbarians we'd been told,” Alfred Anderson, Jesuit school. Many Irish volunteers were among those that took part in the truce that has since become the subject of film and literature.

The world has changed and there are significant improvements and yet new horrors. Generations in one hundred years will look back on our society and wonder why we tolerated injustice. Did we not learn the lesson that Alfred Anderson PARENTS ASSOCIATION (20) learned, that prejudice and discrimination are the consequence of fear and ignorance? The pages that follow will hopefully bear witness to an education that challenges injustice and nurtures in our students a passion to bring about a more just society.

MY LOURDES MIRACLE 4

It is with a nostalgic feeling that I have succumbed to writing this article, looking back on what was the most defining week of my life in terms of how I want to live it. However, this is a fantastic platform for me to express my utter gratitude to all involved for making that week so memorable, most notable of which are the Belvedere group I was so privileged to have travelled with, Alex, Andrew, Thomas, Ed, Conor M., Conor D., Cormac, Jack, Geoff, Mr Eoghan Keogh, Terry McMullan and Bro. Eamon Davis. I shall also give an insight into what I proclaim to be my own ‘Lourdes miracle’.

In addition to the Commodores’ Cup and trophy for best individual boat, the 3 boat team also won the award for best in the inshore series as well as the Edward Heath Cup for a European team.

English classes flying around Austria in the family plane! Ciaran Heelan, Syntax Kenney The Careers’ Office has been a bustling hive of activity since the start of the year. Rhetoric students have been busy making decisions for next year while Poetry students are starting to seriously consider their options for life after the Leaving Cert. Syntax students have been taking their first tenatative steps into the world of work through their first Work Experience module and Junior Cycle students have been brushing up on their Study Skills in preparation for their Christmas exams. Parents have been busy as well with a great turn-out for our CAO Information Evening and the Annual Belvedere Careers’ Evening. We offer the following as a brief summary to help busy parents and students to keep track of what’s on offer.

Rhetoric students kick-started their decision-making process for next year with a trip to the annual Irish Times Higher Options event in the RDS. Here they met with representatives from a wide range of Universities and Third Level Institutions from around the country and abroad.

The Careers’ Office runs a series of Lunch- time Talks most Mondays and Fridays from 12.30-13.00. All 5th & 6th years are invited to attend this working lunch in the Lecture Theatre. This year’s Lunchtime Talks Series has been extremely successful with a great turn- out from students. This year we have welcomed a wide range of guest speakers who informed us of the whereabouts of opportunities including, at UCD Sutherland School of Law, UCD School of Business, Confucius Institute at UCD, DCU, Trinity College, Maynooth University, St. Patricks’ Pontifical University, UCAS, and further study in the USA, The Netherlands, and on the Australian GAP programme.

The Transition Year Work Experience Programme began this term with a Work Experience Preparation workshop given by Ms. O’Donohoe and guest speaker, Mr. Mark Young. Quite a number of Syntax students ventured out into the world of work just before their mid-term break. This was followed by a reflection session ontheir return to school where students
