Likewise, there are also an overwhelming number of different forms, sources and ways to deliver these omega-3 fatty acids; which unfortunately, has led to confusion in product selection for both clinician and patient alike. We will walk through the most common issues discussed in selecting the appropriate omega-3 fatty acid product, with the goal to bring clarity to the decision-making process. For the most part, the marine omega-3 fatty acid category is dominated by products that can be best described as “fish oil.” That is, while there are products available that deliver omega-3 fatty acids from other marine sources, nearly all the available research has been done with fish oil derived fatty acids. This fish oil data has become the benchmark for efficacy and safety, and is the standard to which we compare throughout this paper. -

Tilgangurinn með vöktuninni er að meta ástand íslenskra sjávarafurða með tilliti til magns aðskotaefna. Gögnin sem safnað er í vöktunarverkefninu verða einnig notuð í áhættumati og til að hafa áhrif á setningu hámarksgilda óæskilegra efna t.d í Evrópu. Umfjöllun um aðskotaefni í sjávarafurðum, bæði í almennum fjölmiðlum og í vísindaritum, hefur margoft krafist viðbragða íslenskra stjórnvalda. Nauðsynlegt er að hafa til taks vísindaniðurstöður sem sýna fram á raunverulegt ástand íslenskra sjávarafurða til þess að koma í veg fyrir tjón sem af slíkri umfjöllun getur hlotist. Ennfremur eru mörk aðskotaefna í sífelldri endurskoðun og er mikilvægt fyrir Íslendinga að taka þátt í slíkri endurskoðun og styðja mál sitt með vísindagögnum. Þetta sýnir mikilvægi þess að regluleg vöktun fari fram og að á Íslandi séu stundaðar sjálfstæðar rannsóknir á eins mikilvægum málaflokki og mengun sjávarafurða er. Þessi skýrsla er samantekt niðurstaðna vöktunarinnar árið 2006. Það er langtímamarkmið að meta ástand íslenskra sjávarafurða m.t.t. magns óæskilegra efna. Þessu markmiði verður einungis náð með sívirkri vöktun í langan tíma. -

module 5 PACIFIC FISHERIES 80 MODULE 5 PACIFIC FISHERIES 5.0 FISHERIES IN THE PACIFIC Fish and fishing are culturally and economically critical for most PICTs and are a mainstay of food security in the region. The importance of the fisheries sector to the region’s economy and food security is reflected by its reference in key regional strategies including The Pacific Plan and the Vava’u Declaration on Pacific Fisheries Resources. (See TOOLS 51 & 52.) In the Pacific, a great variety of marine organisms are consumed. In Fiji, for example, over 100 species of finfish and 50 species of invertebrates are officially included in the fish market statistics, and many more species are believed to contribute to the diets of people in rural and urban areas of the Pacific. Fish5 contributes substantially to subsistence and market-based economies and, for some of the smaller PICTs, fishing is their most important renewable resource. Despite growing reliance on imported food products, subsistence fishing still provides the majority of dietary animal protein in the region, and annual per capita consumption of fish ranges from an estimated 13 kg in Papua New Guinea to more than 110 kg in Tuvalu (Table 5.1). According to forecasts of the fish that will be required in 2030 to meet recommended per capita fish consumption in PICTs (34-37 kg/year), or to maintain current consumption levels, coastal fisheries will be able to meet 2030 demand in only 6 of 22 PICTs. Supply is likely to be either marginal or insufficient in the remaining 16 countries, which include the region’s most populous nations of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Vanuatu, as shown in Table 5.1. -

NICOL The Plymouth Laboratory (Plate I and Text-figs. 1-19) Luminescence is very common among marine animals, and many species possess highly developed photophores or light-emitting organs. It is probable, therefore, that luminescence plays an important part in the economy of their lives. A few determinations of the spectral composition and intensity of light emitted by marine animals are available (Coblentz & Hughes, 1926; Eymers & van Schouwenburg, 1937; Clarke & Backus, 1956; Kampa & Boden, 1957; Nicol, 1957b, c, 1958a, b). More data of this kind are desirable in order to estimate the visual efficiency of luminescence, distances at which luminescence can be perceived, the contribution it makes to general back• ground illumination, etc. With such information it should be possible to discuss. more profitably such biological problems as the role of luminescence in intraspecific signalling, sex recognition, swarming, and attraction or re• pulsion between species. As a contribution to this field I have measured the intensities of light emitted by some pelagic species of animals. Most of the work to be described in this paper was carried out during cruises of R. V. 'Sarsia' and RRS. 'Discovery II' (Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom and National Institute of Oceanography, respectively). Collections were made at various stations in the East Atlantic between 30° N. and 48° N. The apparatus for measuring light intensities was calibrated ashore at the Plymouth Laboratory; measurements of animal light were made at sea. -

They may be a little hard to swallow, but Senator Stevens and the North Pacific Council will be sure to offer last minute riders, father and son sweetheart deals, record-breaking quotas, industry-led research, conflicts of interest and anti-trust violations. Meanwhile, fur seals, sea lions and sea otters are going hungry and disappearing fast. Surprise! Pacific Rockfish: See No Fish, Eat No Fish Cowcod, Canary Rockfish and Bocaccio are just three examples of rockfish managed by the Pacific Council that are overfished. As for the exact number of West Coast groundfish that are overfished, who knows? Without surveys to tell them what’s going on, what are they managing exactly? Striped Bass: Thin Is In! This popular Atlantic rockfish is available in abundance. Unfortunately, many appear to be undernourished and suffering from lesions – a condition that may point to Omega Protein’s industrial fishery of menhaden, the striper’s favorite prey species. Actually, you may want to hold off on this one until ASMFC starts regulating menhaden. Can you believe there are still no catch limits? Red Snapper Bycatch Platter While we are unable to provide full-size red snapper, we offer this plate of twenty juvenile red snapper discarded as bycatch from a Gulf of Mexico shrimp trawler for your dining pleasure. Shrimpers take and throw away about half of all young red snappers along the Texas coast, so we’ll keep these little guys coming straight from the back of the boat to the back of your throat! Caribbean Reef Fish Grab Bag What’s for dinner from the Caribbean? Who knows? With coral reefs in their jurisdiction, you would expect the Caribbean Council to be pioneering the ecosystem-based management approach and implementing the precautionary principle approach. -

Black Sea Bass
SEDAR25-RD16 Last Revised: December 2006 Black Sea Bass by Gary Shepherd Distribution, Biology and Management Black sea bass, Centropristis striata, are distributed in the Northwest Atlantic from Maine to Florida (Figure 16.1), with Cape Hatteras, NC serving as a geographic boundary between northern and southern stocks (Musick and Mercer 1977, Shepherd 1991). Sea bass are members of the family Serranidae, which includes groupers commonly found in tropical and sub-tropical waters. Structures such as reefs, wrecks or oyster beds are preferred habitats. Black sea bass may attain sizes up to 60 cm (23.5 in) and 3.6 kg (8 lbs) with maximum age of 10-12 years. Sexual maturity is attained between ages 2 to 4 for females. Black sea bass are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning that they change sex from female to male. Born as females, most fish will change sex to males between ages 2 to 5 (Musick and Mercer 1977). The factors that lead to the sex change have not been proven although it has been speculated that the relative scarcity of males in a spawning group may be the stimulus for a female to switch sex. Spawning in the northern stock generally occurs from April to June after fish have migrated into coastal habitats (Collette and Klein-MacPhee 2002). Males develop a pronounced blue hump on their heads during spawning season and aggressively defend territory, although actual spawning behavior is not well documented. Larvae and juveniles develop and grow in inshore habitats, and juveniles attain lengths of 10-14 cm by fall. Sea bass remain in coastal habitats until water temperatures decrease in fall into early winter, and then migrate to deeper offshore water along the edge of the continental shelf. -

Collins and Bruce W Stender ABSTRACT Surface and subsurface ichthyoplankton collections were made from 9 m to beyond the continental shelf(deepest station 3,940 m) in all seasons from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina to Cape Canaveral, Florida. King mackerel spawn from April to at least September, primarily at depths >40 m. Spring spawning activity takes place further offshore than does summer spawning. An apparent concentration of larvae between 32° and 33°N suggests that the area of upwelling associated with the Charleston bump is an important spawning and/or nursery area. Spanish mackerel spawn from May to September in depths <40 m. Larvae were less abundant than those of king mackerel, and no areas of concentration were found. Vertical migration to the surface at night is indicated for both king and Spanish mackerels. Bluefish spawn bimodally from March through at least November in depths >40 m, with the primary spawning peak in spring and the secondary peak in late summer. In spring, larvae were caught most often between 32° and 33°N, but in summer-fall were taken more often at locations further south. Neither vertical migration or visually-cued net avoidance is indicated, but bluefish >4 mm are strongly associated with the surface. Spanish (Scomberomorus maculatus) and king (S. cavalla) mackerels and blue- fish (Pomatomus saltatrix) support large recreational and commercial fisheries along the east coast of the United States.
