  • One Desire Too Many
one desire too many Abstract: I defend the widely-held view that morally worthy action need not be motivated by a desire to promote rightness as such. Some have recently come to reject this view, arguing that desires for rightness as such are necessary for avoiding a certain kind of luck thought incompatible with morally worthy action. I show that those who defend desires for rightness as such on the basis of this argument misunderstand the relationship between moral worth and the kind of luck that their argument employs. Consequently, the argument provides no reason to doubt the popular view that a desire for rightness as such is no part of virtue. I conclude by sketching a way forward that maintains the best insights of both proponents and opponents of motivation by rightness as such. 1 one desire too many Words: 8053 Preprint version --- please cite version forthcoming in Philosophy & Phenomenological Research 1. Introduction It is commonly alleged that desiring an act’s moral rightness as such is defective in an important way. Acting on such desires is allegedly inconsistent with moral worth, the positive moral state a morally right act enjoys when its rightness is creditable to its agent. These desires are inconsistent with moral worth because they are thought to alienate the agent from moral ends that merit non-instrumental concern such as justice, equality, and welfare.1 For example, when donating to Oxfam is right because it alleviates famine, one ought not to donate simply out of a desire to promote the donation’s rightness as such.

  • The New Culture Industry Tracing Democratization, Cultural Pluralism, and a New ‘Stillness’ in Modern Music
Savoy 1 The New Culture Industry Tracing democratization, cultural pluralism, and a new ‘stillness’ in modern music Augie Savoy Professor Jennifer Friedlander 9/28/20 Savoy 2 PREFACE In this country, it’s very hard for creative thought to escape capitalism. —Juan Atkins I have the impression that many of the elements that are supposed to provide access to music actually impoverish our relationship with it. —Michel Foucault As a listener, my earliest memory of music is hearing Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall on a portable CD player when I went to pre-school in Norway. Because my family had recently moved there, I had no experience speaking Norwegian and, until I figured it out, my parents thought I could listen to music to pass the time. For better or worse, it did far more than that. It started my love affair with music. On the surface, Off the Wall was straight to the point, ener- getic, and loud. As I replayed it, I realized that I could stick my head into the production and hear all the small details. The drums were rigid and robotic. The bass was relaxed and fluid. Michael Jackson’s voice was elastic, traveling across an entire emotional spectrum from tender to harsh. The production felt like a spectrum of different faces and characters. It was the storytelling and humanness of the record that made it compelling. It turned an uneventful day in pre-school, sur- rounded by kids I couldn’t understand, into a cinematic piece of art. Like Michael Jackson’s legacy, however, my relationship to music has become more complicated as I’ve gotten older.

  • MAKING SENSE of the TERMINATION RIGHT: How the System Fails Artists and How to Fix It
MAKING SENSE OF THE TERMINATION RIGHT: How the System Fails Artists and How to Fix It PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE DYLAN GILBERT 2019 | DEC. MEREDITH ROSE ALISA VALENTIN Acknowledgements The authors wish to thank those who provided thoughtful feedback during the drafting of this paper, including Lita Rosario, Esq. at WYZ Girl Entertainment Consulting, Professor Lateef Mtima at Howard University School of Law, and Jodie Griffin, Deputy Division Chief at the Federal Communications Commission, who provided analysis feedback in her personal capacity as an attorney and musician. The authors also thank Adonne Washington, third year student at the Howard University School of Law, for her helpful research assistance. Executive Summary Hidden inside Title 17 of the United States Code of Laws sits an unassuming but powerful right that Congress gave to artists and creators: the termination right. Unlike many statutory rights, this right is inalienable – it cannot be given away, not even through contract. Many artists enter into deals with companies that help fund, develop, resource, promote, and distribute their creative output. Typically, such deals involve artists granting or licensing the copyright in their work to these business partners for lengthy periods of time; sometimes these transfers are legally binding in perpetuity. The termination right allows authors of creative works to cut short, or terminate, existing grants or licenses of their work after at least 35 years have passed, regardless of their contract terms. Congress justified the creation of the termination right on both economic and moral grounds. The right – codified at Sections 203 and 304 of the Copyright Act – was enacted to protect authors and their heirs against agreements that were unprofitable or inequitable by giving them an opportunity to share in the later economic success of their works.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Abstract How might songs, like John Lennon's Imagine or Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the wind, offer ways to explore alternative ways of being in the world, to challenge the status quo? How might these songs become springboards for original pieces that capture students' ideas about world issues? In this article, I observe what happens when selected strategies from an on-going curricular writing project utilizing a social justice framework are presented to a class of New York City fifth graders. I draw from student-created songs, instrumental compositions, written and video-taped narratives to document ways in which these elementary school students embrace ideals of social responsibility through music-making. • Happiness: New Album Reviews
Love & Happiness: New Album Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world This week I will be highlighting some albums which may just make your hearts go aflutter and your feet do little leaps of joy. With Winter preparing to nestle down for a good long rest there is a string of new records coming out which will put a spring in anybody’s step. We have some lush house sounds from Strictly Rhythm and John Tejada, the disco-tinged indie of Franz Ferdinand, the lovelorn acoustics from Robert Earl Thomas, and lots more. By JOHN BITTLES So, cast your hot water bottles and cardies aside, and let us begin… For those who grew up in a cave raised by overprotective beavers let me explain that Strictly Rhythm is a legendary record label adored by anyone with a love of all things house. Since its formation back in 1989 the New York based imprint has brought us some of the greatest records to grace a dance floor. This month sees the release of a three disc retrospective collecting some of the tracks which won our hearts many moons ago. Strictly Rhythm Underground 90-97 is available from the 23rd of February and is full of gospel vocals, funky beats and raw acid jams. There are so many bona fide anthems here that you almost don’t know where to begin. There is the jazz-heavy groove of Luv Dancin‘ (In Deep Mix) by The Underground Solution, Can You Feel It (In House Dub) by CLS, Hardrive’s seminal Deep Inside, and Reach by Lil‘ Mo‘ Yin Yang to name but a few.
