South India Fertility Project: Karnataka T V Sekher and K N M Raju With fertility decline reaching all the continents, human societies in the developing world are passing through an irreversible phase in their demographic history. This decline, which illustrates the second phase of the demographic transition following the inception of mortality decline, is a product of important transformations affecting households and their economic functioning in a society undergoing rapid changes. South India represents one of the regions in the developing world where fertility decline has been the most spectacular, with the average number of children per women approaching the replacement.26 level. Demographic transition in South India has now clearly entered its last phase and the decrease of birth rates, presently steeper than that of death rates, has resulted in an overall decline of natural increase. However, in view of the mediocre level of economic development in this part of the country, the South Indian experience has revived the discussion on the determinants of fertility reduction, notably about the respective roles played by endogenous factors such as cultural and historical features and by exogenous factors such as economic transformations and governmental interventions in family planning. This project is aimed at understanding the channels of fertility decline through the analysis of socio-cultural and spatial differentials. Objectives, Methodology and Scope of the Study The aim of the project is the analysis of the social and economic dimension of demographic change through the study of spatial heterogeneity of fertility in South India, with two central objectives —description and interpretation of fertility transition in South India, in order to contribute to a global synthesis on current population dynamics in developing countries. -

Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies. -

Incredible India’ Campaign
Preface This article investigates the ‘Incredible India’ campaign. From the author’s initial encounter with this particular campaign an indescribable attraction was experienced. Thus, the performer of this study developed firm faith in the process of executing this research. It all commenced with a university course named ‘Strategic Mass Communication’ taught by Dr. Etienne Augé at the Erasmus University which is located in Rotterdam. In addition to Dr. Augé thought provoking teachings, the subject matters that were included in the course curriculum were valued by the author of this master’s thesis as decisive in establishing this academic article. During one of the sessions of this course, the researcher of this study read about the concept of ‘nation branding’. The executer of this research study was completely unfamiliar to the concept, yet a direct interest was aroused. As a consequence of this raise in interest, the author of this master’s thesis commenced with an exploration of the concept. The end result was complete amazement. Never before was the researcher of this study consciously aware of the fact that nations can be branded. Just imagine. In contemporary society, almost everyone associates him or herself with the brand of a particular (commercial or non-commercial) organization. The brand of a country, however, is hardly associated with, by the majority of people globally. Perhaps, that might also not be the purpose of a country’s brand. Yet, many people around the world communicate beliefs and opinions, in other words the reputation, of a country they visited. The result of this form of communication is the creation of a particular image about a particular country. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The megalithic monuments of peninsular India, believed to have been erected in the Iron Age (1500BC – 200AD), can be broadly categorized into sepulchral and non-sepulchral in purpose. Though a lot of work has gone into the study of these monuments since Babington first reported megaliths in India in 1823, not much is understood about the knowledge systems extant in the period when these were built – in science and engineering, and especially in mathematics and astronomy. We take a brief look at the archaeological understanding of megaliths, before making a detailed assessment of a group of megaliths in the south Canara region of Karnataka State in South India that were hitherto assumed to be haphazard clusters of menhirs. Our surveys have indicated that there is a positive correlation of sight-lines with sunrise and sunset points on the horizon for both summer and winter solstices. We identify five such monuments in the region and present the survey results for one of these sites, demonstrating their astronomical implications. We also discuss the possible use of megaliths in the form of stone alignments/ avenues as calendar devices. -

A questionnaire survey was conducted on sample size of 700 respondents from northern and southern states of India. Data was then analyzed using Factor analysis, Multiple regressions, Anova. Originality/Value: Today’s marketer is confronted not only with the challenge of identifying the segments but also has to counter the impact of globalization which has removed all boundaries. India is one of the most culturally diverse nations of the world. The traditional method of using whole country as the culti unit is not applicable in case of India. India can be divided into numerous cultures and traditions. One of the basis of segmentation in India is North India and South India. -

According to The World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism generated ₹16.91 lakh crore (US$240 billion) or 9.2% of India’s GDP in 2018 and supported 42.673 million jobs, 8.1% of its total employment. The sector is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 6.9% to ₹32.05 lakh crore (US$460 billion) by 2028 (9.9% of GDP). The Ministry has been actively working towards the development of quality tourism infrastructure at various tourist destinations and circuits in the States / Union Territories by sanctioning expenditure budgets across schemes like SWADESH DARSHAN and PRASHAD. The Ministry of Tourism has been actively promoting India as a 365 days tourist destination with the introduction of niche tourism products in the country like Cruise, Adventure, Medical, Wellness, Golf, Polo, MICE Tourism, Eco-tourism, Film Tourism, Sustainable Tourism, etc. to overcome ‘seasonality’ challenge in tourism. Microfinance in South India: A Case Study Keywords Microfinance, Poverty, South India, Kerala Disciplines Business Comments Microfinance is a novel economic development tool aimed at alleviating poverty through financial inclusion, socioeconomic empowerment, and self-sufficiency. By virtue of a large and poor population, India is one of the largest microfinance markets in the world, and having recently confronted a fundamental moral question related to the mission of the field, presents an interesting area to study. Most press and research coverage focuses on microfinance in Andhra Pradesh due to a high microfinance penetration rate and recent events, but this paper aims to focus its study on the microfinance sector in the South Indian state of Kerala, distinct from the rest of India due to a unique cultural and regulatory environment relative to microfinance sectors in the rest of the world. This research is primarily structured as a qualitative survey conducted through travelling to rural villages in the state and interviewing officers, administrators, and beneficiaries ot analyze competition in the sector, understand whether it is successful in its mission of poverty alleviation and empowerment, and compile a list of success factors that can be applied elsewhere.
