The Holy See
The Holy See APOSTOLIC VISIT OF HIS HOLINESS POPE JOHN PAUL II TO AZERBAIJAN AND BULGARIA EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION HOMILY OF THE HOLY FATHER Baku Sports Palace Thursday, 23 May 2002 1. "Honour to you who believe!" (1 Pt 2:7). Yes, beloved brothers and sisters of the Catholic community of Baku, and all of you who come from the Catholic communities in the neighbouring countries, "honour to you who believe!" I greet the Christians of the Orthodox Church who have joined us for this solemn moment of prayer, with their Bishop, Alexander. To them too I address the words of the Apostle Peter to the first Christians: "Honour to you who believe!". The universal Church pays tribute to all those who succeeded in remaining faithful to their Baptismal commitments. I am thinking in particular of those who live permanently in this country and who experienced the tragedy of Marxist persecution, and bore the consequences of their faithful attachment to Christ. Brothers and sisters, you saw your religion mocked as mere superstition, as an attempt to escape the responsibilities of engagement in history. For this reason you were regarded as second class citizens and were humiliated and marginalized in many ways. 2. "Honour to you who believe!" Honour to your grandfathers and grandmothers, to your fathers and mothers, who nurtured the seed of faith in you, nourished it with prayer, and helped it to grow and bear fruit. I wish to repeat once again, honour also to you, the holy Orthodox Church; you opened your doors to the Catholic faithful, who were without fold or shepherd. -

Catholic Minority in Modern Azerbaijan1
STUDIA ORIENTALNE 2018, nr 2 (14) ISSN 2299-1999 Julia Krajcarz Catholic minority in modern Azerbaijan1 he question of the Catholic Christianity in Azerbaijan recently has been deeply worked out, analyzed and discussed in numerous pub- lications,T both printed and digitally widespread in the Internet, in Azer- baijan and abroad. Among them there are books and papers prepared on the academic level as well as publicistic, informative and also sensational media texts. This focus on the mentioned topic could be caused by many factors, among them the most significant are: stable, constant and good cooperation between the Azerbaijani government or its specialised agen- das and the Holy See, two visits of the pontiff, Bishop of Rome and the leader of Worldwide Catholic Church, John Paul II in 2002 and Francis in 2016, increasing number of parishioners of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Baku, few years-persperctive distance of the history of re- newed Catholic community in Azerbaijan, the phenomenon of governa- mental support for non-Muslim religious communities in the traditionally Muslim country, legal guarantee of the freedom of religious beliefs etc. Methodology, aim The aim of this paper is to broaden some observations and add new ones concerning the subject of the Azerbaijani Catholics, the history of the community, experiences and reflexions of its members. Presented data was gathered and formulated during the fieldwork research undertaking in August 2017 by the paper’s author. The author analyzed several printed and online publications about the Azerbaijani Catholic minority before the conversations with Azerbaijani Catholics attending religious service kept at church and chapel in Baku. -
Challenges to the Churches in Asia Today*
Challenges to the Churches in Asia Today* Georg Evers ABSTRACT Georg Evers, in “Challenges to the Churches in Asia Today,” begins with a brief overview of the situation of the Asian churches before Vatican II. He then discusses the significance of the Council for the Asian churches with special attention to the founding of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. He describes the main characteristics of the Catholic churches in Asia. In the main theme of his talk, “The Challenges to the Asian Churches,” Evers presents prophetic figures who have inspired the churches to radical Christian commitment and invites us to examine contemporary secular and theological challenges. *Talk given at the East Asian Pastoral Institute Alumni Homecoming, 4 October 2005 (Manila, Philippines). Originally published in East Asian Pastoral Review 43, no. 2 (2006): 152–72.. 20 Evers, Challenges to Churches in Asia Today 21 Introduction My personal competence – if I may claim to have any – results from 22 years of having been on the Asia Desk of the Instiutute of Missiology, Missio in Aachem, Germany. In this capacity I observed developments in the Asian churches with a special focus on contextual theologies, the theology of reli- gions and interreligious dialogue within Asian theology for our bibliograph- ical journal Theology in Context. For more than ten years, I took part in the annual meetings of the Theological Advisory Commission, now called Office of Theological Concerns of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), first as an observer and later as a resource person. My extensive trav- eling in Asia brought me into contact – however short the time – with most Asian countries and the local Catholic churches there. -
And They Remained with Us the Perfect Model of a Missionary Is Jesus Christ
...and they remained with us The perfect model of a missionarY is Jesus Christ. Through the incarnation he assumed a human nature, became inserted into a culture, learned a language, and liVed the Values of his Tpeohple. He e pitched his tent in our midst. (Jn 1,14). He did not merelY pass bY, but rather he loVed us to the end. (cf. Jn 13,1). His entire eXistence is in itself missionarY: from the incarnation until his oWn definitiVe embracing of the cross. A missionarY Vocation folloWs the Lord’s model. ParticularlY this Year, We Want to underline the presence of the Salesians of Don Bosco in the midst of the indigenous peoples of America. A presence that has sought to knoW, Value and at times to saVe their culture and identitY. CertainlY a generous missionarY action, in its initial moments, is not eXempt from the VerY limitations of the time, that becomes enriched bY the anthropological sciences and the theologY of Vatican II. A presence among the Mapuche, Fueguinos, Guaranís, Bororos, XaVantes, Shuars, Yanomamis, MiXes, Chiantecos, AYmara Quechuas, Qeqchis, and manY others. With them We share and proclaim the Good NeWs of Jesus, and its consequent realiZation of full humaniZation, through education, technical formation, the deVelopment of agriculture, and reflection at the uniVersitY leVel on the indigenous identitY. From the Salesian mission comes forth fruits of culture and holiness, as We haVe seen in the testimonY of Blessed Zeferino Namuncurá. The missionarY presence is not merelY a tourist or cultural trip, rather, it is like that of the Lord, Who came “to staY With them”. -
