I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.” — Philemon 1:4-7 Saint Paul’s Outreach New Jersey has much to be thankful for these days; God has indeed given the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6)! In particular, we are deeply grateful for your partnership with us. Whether you are a long time supporter of SPO or are just getting to know us, we deeply appreciate your presence here with us tonight. As you may know, SPO New Jersey is commemorating our fifth anniversary of ministry and missionary outreach to college students in New Jersey. In 2014, with your help, we were able to: • Reach more than 1700 students with a first experience of faith through friendships, social events, and meaningful on-campus conversations • Call more than 150 students with a regular experience of faith connected to our Households, on-campus small groups, and retreats • Form 50 students with a year-long experience of faith through SPO’s Formation Program • Send those 50 students out as Missionaries to their peers, along with other volunteers and staff, into the mission field of college campuses, impacting the university culture for Christ and His Church Your investment in SPO, combined with the missionary efforts of our dedicated young people, has helped impact nearly 2000 young people in just one year of mission work. We invite you to continue to grow with us. This important work would not be possible without your generous support. We look forward to a continued partnership with you as we strive to make Catholic Faith Alive on Campus through the grace of God, who is “able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine by the power at work within us” (Ephesians 3:19). As a young teenager his faith came alive through his participation in the Neocatechumenate, a post-baptismal itinerary of Catholic formation. He studied Chemistry and Science at the University of Malta, eventually becoming a technical manager for a Canada Dry bottling plant. Bishop Peter credits his participation at World Youth Day in Santiago de Compostela, led by St. John Paul II, as a pivotal moment in his vocational journey. Not only did he feel a calling to priesthood, he felt a call to mission. “I [was willing] to serve the Church anywhere,” he says. “I fell in love with the missionary aspect of the Church. It was like falling in love. And the Lord took it from there. Everything else was easy.” After careful discernment, he offered himself as a missionary seminarian at the service of the Archdiocese of Newark. He studied at Seton Hall University’s Immaculate Conception School of Theology while residing at Redemptoris Mater Seminary, a missionary house of formation located in Kearny, New Jersey. He obtained a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark in 1996. Upon ordination, he was assigned as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood, NJ, where he served for three years. In 1999, he was made Pastor of Our Lady of Divine Providence and Chancellor of Newark’s mission to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. It was there that he learned Creole and served the community of Haitians, native islanders, ex-patriots and tourists. Under his pastorship the mission on the islands flourished, new houses of worship were built, and a thriving school was established for the children of the islands. In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI named him a Chaplain to His Holiness, with the honorary title of Reverend Monsignor. He was named Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Miami and Titular Bishop of Vatarba by Pope Francis on February 20, 2014. He chose as his episcopal motto “Ubi Dominus, ibidem laetitia” (Where God is, there is joy). Bishop Peter speaks five languages: English, Maltese, Italian, Spanish and Creole. Servant Leader Award Honoree Our Lady of Mount Carmel Ridgewood, NJ Established in 1889, the community of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a vibrant parish living its baptismal call to holiness in stewardship and service within the Archdiocese of Newark and abroad. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is filled with diverse and varied expressions of faith and ministry. With over fifty ministries and groups, the parish seeks to engage not only its own parishioners in their personal faith journeys, but those who have left the Church or do not have anyone to minister to them. Since 1998, Our Lady of Mount Carmel has played a pivotal role in the Archdiocese of Newark’s Missio Sui Iuris in the Turks and Caicos Islands through personnel, support, and service. Thanks to their “yes” to God’s call, the parish community continues to assist the Archdiocese of Newark to be authentically missionary in its outreach, bringing the Good News to distant lands. Through their contribution of time, talent, and treasure, the parish has contributed to the flourishing of the Church in New Jersey and beyond. As a parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel is not only the supporter of the missions, but a community which has also sent missionaries from its own ranks, both lay and religious, to dioceses around the country and the world. We honor the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for its lasting commitment to the New Evangelization in the Archdiocese of Newark, the United States and the Universal Church. Emcees Joe Buganski Joe hails from Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, where he is the middle child in a family of seven children. A recent graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a degree in civil engineering, Joe was blessed to become involved with Saint Paul’s Outreach New Jersey his freshman year, and promptly moved into Household his sophomore year. A huge Philadelphia Eagles fan, Joe loves playing sports - especially basketball - and can also be found playing guitar, hiking, camping, working with his hands, and talking to anyone and everyone about anything and everything. He is excited to be on campus and spreading the Gospel, and feels specifically charged with raising up young men to be leaders and live passionately. Becca Shrake You could say missionary work runs in Becca’s blood. When she was 7 years old, she moved to Panama with her family for two years while her parents were in the missions. However, it wasn’t until Becca’s senior year of college that she felt the Lord calling her to become a missionary herself and serve the spiritually poor students on college campuses.
