Anti-Racism Action Plan a Self-Paced Guidebook HOW TO WRITE AN ANTI-RACISM ACTION PLAN A SELF-PACED GUIDEBOOK We are called in the current moment to actively move from Office of Diversity, non-racist thinking to anti- Equity & Inclusion racist actions.     2 White Privilege and Cultural Racism Effects on the Counselling Process Nia Addy Abstract White privilege is an insidious and elusive concept that, when discussed, often generates strong reactions of denial, guilt, shame, discomfort, and defensiveness (Arminio, 2001). This article attempts to provide a précis of what is meant by white privilege and how it manifests in New Zealand society. White privilege and cultural racism are then examined in relation to the counselling process. The necessity is discussed for white counsellors to develop an awareness of their own racial identity in order to better understand and address the impact of race issues on both their sense of self and their work. Most White people, in my experience, tend not to think of themselves in racial terms. They know they are White, of course, but mostly that translates into being not Black.… Whiteness, in and of itself, has little meaning. (Dalton, 2005, p. 15) The “invisible whiteness of being”, as described by D. W. Sue (2006, p. 15), creates a tangled and sticky web of racial dominance and cultural racism. In Western societies, white people are socialised into occupying a position of power and privilege, and by so being, there is little drive or incentive to address issues of white racial identity and the unearned advantages of having light skin (Dyer, 1997; Lago, 2006; Sue, 2006; Tuckwell, 2002, 2006).     Kuyper and Apartheid: A revisiting Patrick Baskwell (Brandon, Florida, USA)1 Research Associate: Department of Dogmatics and Christian Ethics University of Pretoria Abstract Was Abraham Kuyper, scholar, statesman, and university founder, the ideological father of Apartheid in South Africa? Many belief so. But, there are others, amongst them George Harinck of the Free University in Amsterdam, who don’t think so. The article argues that there is an element of truth in both opinions. Kuyper did exhibit the casual racism so characteristic of the Victorian era, with its emphasis on empire building and all that it entailed. Kuyper was also directly responsible, ideologically, for the social structure in the Netherlands known as “verzuiling” or “pillarization” in terms of which members of the Catholic, Protestant, or Socialist segments of society had their own social institutions. This pillarizing, or segmenting, of society was, however, always voluntary. This is not true of the pillarizing or segmenting of South African society known as Apartheid. While there are similarities between Apartheid and “verzuiling”, especially in their vertical partitioning of the individual’s entire life, the South African historical context, the mediation of Kuyper’s ideas through South African scholars, the total government involvement, and therefore, the involuntary nature of Apartheid, point to their inherent dissimilarity. Apartheid was simply not pure Kuyper. Hence, while the effects of Kuyper’s ideas are clearly discernable in Apartheid policy, the article aims at arguing that Kuyper cannot be considered the father of Apartheid in any direct way. 1. It is such an honor to be with you, to be back with “the family,” to still be considered part of the family even though I’m playing with a different franchise these days! I am grateful for my history with three Ignatian communities in particular – Saint Joseph’s University, Boston College, and Fordham University – who have given me tools and perhaps more importantly the courage – to take up the calling of my vocation as a theologian everyday. For about 10 years now, ever since I started making pilgrimages around Philadelphia looking for God in community murals and the people who make them, walking through neighborhoods in North Philadelphia where great-grandparents and grandparents lived and sensing my connection to the transformation of “ghettos of opportunity” into “ghettos of last resort”1 and longing to have even an iota of the creativity and resilience of folks who live in them, I’ve discerned the Spirit calling me wade into the troubled waters of racial injustice. I’ve felt called to understand my family, my church, my vocation, what going on in my neighborhood and in my City through the lens of race. It’s not been pretty. It’s not been easy. The way has not been clear. People of color, used to “whitesplaining”2 where racism is concerned, are understandably suspicious. The research was a qualitative study with a sample of 12 White people who self identified as able to recognize the benefits of their White privilege, accepted their own role in perpetuating racism, were knowledgeable about racial, ethnic, and cultural differences, and are able to talk about race. Through phone interviews, participants were asked to reflect on their lives and offer their narrative of how learning about and accepting their White privilege and racism have changed their consciousness. The findings of the study increase our understanding of how White people’s racial identity is formed, the complex emotions and stages that are part of this formation, and offer important guidance for other White people looking to join in anti-racism work.

    Black Matters: Young Ethiopian Jews and Race in Israel Gabriella Djerrahian Department of Anthropology McGill University, Montreal March 2014 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © Gabriella Djerrahian, March 2014 Elements of the thesis are considered original scholarship and distinct contributions to knowledge. Abstract This dissertation sheds light on the multiple articulations of race and blackness in Israel amongst two age groups of Ethiopian Jews (teenagers and young adults). My analysis of the stigma of Ethiopian Jewish blackness relies on a two-thronged approach. Racially speaking, on the one hand this group copes with lingering doubts as to the authenticity and “purity” in regards to their bloodline and genealogy. On the other hand, blackness as a racial stigma is located on the level of the epidermis and is, somatically speaking, skin deep. Both racial logics clash and contradict one another as Ethiopian Jews struggle to find their place in Jewish Israeli society. I describe in detail the historical period that formed the group that came to be known as Ethiopian Jews and recount the impact encounters with Western Jews had on their formation as black Jews living in Israel. I argue that their identity as Jews racially speaking is the platform on which Ethiopians’ blackness gains traction. As such, however marginalized, their position as “internal Others” cannot be disassociated from the larger legal and structural implications of their racial inclusion into the body of the Jewish meta-family. Race and ethnic relations amongst Jews are also explored as a way to provide the backdrop against which Ethiopian Jewish blackness and claims of racism emerged.
