A date has been chosen, Sunday, October 8, at the Wolk Folk Garden at 4:00 pm. Rather than a full blown pot luck, the plan is for munchies and desserts, with a silent auction, jams by Lynn's Jam and performances by the scholarship winners. This is an event that raises funds for musical instruments, lessons, instrument repair, camp fees, etc. for children who are interested and involved in Folk, Old Time, Bluegrass, etc., music. Spreading the message of music and how it can improve your own and others' lives was important to Sue Beevers. She played fiddle in a band, Scats on the Sly, wrote plays and song lyrics, volunteered for many events that furthered good in the world, including support for the preservation of the Chinese cultural locations in Hanford. A good friend to all she met, her light will continue in this expression of what she loved—children and music. The Wolk Folk Garden is located at 6661 N. Forkner, Fresno. Volunteers are needed to help stage this event. Also, if you have an item(s) that you wish to donate to the silent auction, please contact Sue Wirt at 222-9801 and bring it to the event. (Sue Wirt) Community Dance Changes The tradition of twice monthly Contra Dances which have been held for many years, most recently at the California Dance Academy, have been discontinued due to low attendance. Organizers will take another look at possibly restarting them next year. Send any ideas you have that may bring renewed contra dance success to Evo Bluestein at [email protected]. Until then, keep those hooves a shakin’. In the meantime, the 1st Saturday English Country Dance continues in Auberry and the 4th Saturday Irish dance continues at Cal Arts Academy. There will also be a quarterly North Fork Dance starting June 16. Details at evobluestein.com. or email Evo. Eva Scow : violin & mandolin Andrew Dixon : clarinet/saxophone Mike Taylor : guitar Kevin Hill : upright bass Scow is a mandolinist and violinist who started playing music at the age of 4 and has played in orchestras and bands exploring music from Bluegrass to Brazilian Jazz. Scow has opened for artists including Willie Nelson, Poncho Sanchez, Lee Ritenour, and JJ Cale. Scow is a member of the contemporary jazz quartet Espacio and the progressive funk group The Experience. She teaches string orchestra and jazz education for Central Unified School District and the Milestones Youth Jazz Workshop. This lady is filthy talented. Le Petit Strings is Scow’s newest group that explores the world of Gypsy Jazz. Originating in 1930’s France, Gypsy Jazz, also called gypsy swing or hot club jazz, is a style of jazz made popular by artists such as guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli. Sometimes you just need to sit back, relax, and listen so some jazz. TWILIGHT THURSDAYS BACK IN SEPTEMBER The Clovis Botanical Gardens on Clovis Avenue at Alluvial will host the Twilight Thursdays series again this year. Musical events being celebrated start on Thursday, September 14 with the Uncle Ephus Band, a favorite at Bluegrass in the Park; September 21, the Gilly Girls will be present to regale us with their instruments and harmony; September 28, Two for the Road will return for an encore performance of swing, Celtic, and folk music; and on October 5, J.T. And Sarah will perform a variety of songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s. The parking and performances are free, located at the north end of the park in the Pavillion. Bring your chairs and munchies or dinner. Clovis Botanical Gardens will have cookies for sale (they are really good). Hope you can attend. (Sue Wirt) 3 BLUEGRASS IN THE PARK IN AUGUST Here we are in August and there are only a few performances left on the calendar. August 4th, Sugar Pine will be playing a variety of music. They play for the Sugar Pine Railroad events (some of them are also in Narrow Gauge Ramblers—more train stuff). Dave Novell, Jeff Gu- rule, Chuck Thrapp and Robyn Flory are the band members and always give us a good time. On August 11th, the Morgan Canyon Band will be there. It is a perennial favorite, with musi- cians Dave Kyle, Mike McDonald, John Blanchfield, and Art Farkas who favor us with Blue- grass as well as Parrot Head songs from Jimmy Buffet, and my favorites, songs from the Ea- gles. One of our members sent a cd of their music to a musician friend out of state who then wanted ten more for his friends. The park will be dark for us on August 18th while the law school uses it for their annual back-to-school BBQ. However, on August 25th, Jason and Ida Winfree and Friends will be there, traveling from the Turlock/Modesto area. The friends are Keith Davis and Vaughn Lew. Jason is a founding member of Red Dog Ash, a very popular award-winning Bluegrass band.

What They’re Sayin’About Steel String “Americana”... “Paul Asbell’s ‘Steel String Americana” is a wonderful album! What I keep coming back to is how musical it is... I’ve actually been a fan of Paul’s guitar playing for quite a few years - I think he’s one of the best-kept secrets in American music today!” David Bromberg, acoustic guitar legend “...Steel String Americana is... a sumptuously recorded showcase for the myriad wondrous tones of the solo acoustic guitar- played by one who knows how to extract them all... Definitely one of my favorite guitar CDs of 2002.” Vintage Guitar Magazine, “Check this Action”, Dec. ‘02, written by Dan Forte “...veteran guitarist Paul Asbell fingerpicks his way through a stylistically diverse collection of tunes plucked from the great American musical canon and arranged and played with finesse, imagination, and humor. Asbell’s beautiful instrumental versions of the 1960s pop hit “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and the ven- erable jazz standard “Stardust” seem right at home in a set that also includes... a funky fingerstyle rendition of Jerry Reed’s “Amos Moses” that just might make you reassess the original.” Acoustic Guitar Magazine, in the April ‘03 “Hit List” section “Solo acoustic guitarists tend to specialize in one genre, but Paul Asbell delights in exploring a spectrum of styles. With steady hands and a relaxed sense of swing, he tackles bouncy ragtime fingerpicking, crisp flat- picking, and lush, jazzy chording with equal aplomb... Asbell - who began his career backing Otis Rush and Magic Sam in Chicago blues clubs - knows how to sneak passing chords and moving bass lines into his arrangements without obscuring the melody or cluttering the groove.

  • Like a Wrecking Ball: Gillian Welch and the Modern South
LIKE A WRECKING BALL: GILLIAN WELCH AND THE MODERN SOUTH Jason Kirby A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Dr. Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Dr. Bill Albertini ii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis explores the work of “alternative country” music performer Gillian Welch in the context of modern-day Southeastern American regional identity. Gillian Welch, along with her accompanist and songwriting partner David Rawlings, has been known since the mid-1990s for making spare acoustic music which incorporates elements of early country and string-band music, bluegrass, gospel, rock, punk, and folk music. Her songs’ lyrics obliquely address themes of change and continuity central to the Southern roots music she draws upon. Welch has been celebrated as an innovator in the “alt.country” scene, but her detractors have labeled her as inauthentic, due to her status as a woman raised in privilege in California performing music most commonly associated with Southern working-class people. The authenticity debate surrounding Welch is particularly relevant considering the shifting boundaries of Southern regional identity following latter 20th century industrialization and re-migration to the area. Having first established the social and historical context to the debate, in this thesis I argue that Gillian Welch’s music opens up traditionally limited definitions of what it means to be Southern in modern America. Welch’s work proves that it is possible to use the region’s past as a tool to understand its present situation, without sinking into a sort of white nostalgia.

quick song backed with strummed dulcimers, keyboards, recorder, and xylophone. On Ousflug, several of the instrumentals are standouts, including “Basse Danse La Gatta,” which uses organ, recorders, and percussion to state the theme, then adds guitars, a rhythm section, and wordless vocals for a richer sound. The final Ougenweide CD includes Ja-Markt and Noch Aber ist Abril Corvus Corax [BCD 15974], the band’s seventh and eighth studio albums. These were recorded without the help of the group’s longtime producer Achim Reichel, which may help explain the radical change in the group’s sound. Gone are most of the medieval elements, leaving a more conventional rock band with only a few folk touches. There are moments of beauty on both these albums, including some pretty oboe playing and Tull-style flute on Ja- Markt. They’re well-done early-80s pop albums, much like what its contemporary Malicorne achieved with its final two albums. Like those Malicorne albums, however, these appealed less to the group’s original fans than the earlier mate- rial, and have aged less well since. Thus, this is my least favorite of the Ougenweide reissues. One note on all the Ougenweide material: The two CDs reviewed in # 128 had extensive liner notes in English; these three CDs have all the notes in German only. Staying with reissues for the moment, Giles Farnaby’s Dream Band [Walhalla WH90324 (2004)], the 1973 album by the short-lived band of the same name, must count as one of the classics of early-music/ s we’ve seen in recent However, be warned that the group for the soundtrack of a TV series folk-rock crossover.
