32 The Role of The Beatles in Popularizing Indian Music and Culture in the West Rodrigo Guerrero Faculty Advisors: Dr. Charles Brewer, Dr. Sarah Eyerly, and Dr. Douglass Seaton College of Music Abstract: The Beatles were responsible for several long-lasting innovations that shaped the history of pop music and Western culture in general. As a British rock band that dominated the popular music scene during the 1960s, they made one of their most significant, yet sometimes overlooked, contributions through the incorporation of elements from Indian culture in their music and lyrics. This essay discusses the role that the Beatles played in introducing and popularizing certain features of Indian culture, and specifically Indian music, in the Western hemisphere. I first describe their relationship with Indian culture. In this section, I bring forth questions, such as why they became interested in this culture, why they decided to go on a spiritual retreat to India, and how the trip influenced their thoughts about foreign culture. After that, this essay analyzes the influence of Indian culture and Indian music on the Beatles’ lyrics and music, respectively. Finally, I will illuminate the lasting effect that this cross- fertilization had in subsequent years. he 1960s was a decade of experimentation in popular music. The Beatles, the British rock band that dominated the popular music scene Tduring this decade, was responsible for long-lasting innovations that would shape the history and style of pop music and Western culture. One of their most significant, yet overlooked, contributions to Western culture was the incorporation of Indian musical elements into their songs.

A Discussion around an exhibition showcasing photographic prints of The Beatles’ time in India with photographer Paul Saltzman, which highlights the role of photography in representing subcultures For Immediate Release In 1968, The Beatles visited Rishikesh, India to study transcendental meditation at the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Ashram on the banks of the Ganga. It was here that they crossed paths with Canadian filmmaker Paul Saltzman, who was on a journey of his own, working as a sound-engineer for the National Film Board of Canada. Saltzman was also visiting the Ashram to mend a broken heart through meditation. He went on to spend 11 days meditating with John, Paul, George and Ringo and managed to capture some of the most intimate photographs ever taken of the iconic band. This collection of 25 photographic prints has been featured in his new book – The Beatles in India and will exhibited in Mumbai for the first time at ICIA Gallery, Kala Ghoda. Tim B. Wride, Curator of Photography at The Norton Museum of Art says of Paul’s work, “Saltzman’s images are irresistible- the more one looks into them, the more they relinquish their secrets. Tiny details and unnoticed associations coalesce around the unplanned and the unexpected.” In 2000 Viking Penguin released Paul’s first book, “The Beatles in Rishikesh”. In early 2006, Paul created a deluxe Limited Edition Box- Set, “The Beatles in India”. In 2018, Insight Editions released a hardcover edition of “The Beatles in India” a curated selection of which will be displayed in this forthcoming exhibition. Avid Learning, Consulate General of Canada in Mumbai and ICIA Gallery present Beatlemania: Capturing Subcultures through the Lens a conversation between filmmaker and photographer Paul Saltzman and art critic and curator Girish Shahane.

The hotel features exclusive Beatles artwork by world-renowned artists with close association to the band, including Shannon, Paul Ygartua, Julia Baird, and Klaus Voorman. Previously unseen archived photographs of the band, including those taken by Fleet Street photographer Bill Zygmant and Paul Saltzman, adorn the walls of the hotel along with items of Beatles memorabilia placed throughout the public areas. WHY THE GAP? Paul De Silva Doctor of Philosophy Communication and Culture Ryerson University Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 2018 Prime-time narrative is the most watched and influential genre of television. It creates a sense of belonging and contributes to identity formation. It also receives the largest amount of publicly mandated funding in the form of investment, subsidies, and tax incentives in Canada. Anecdotal and empirical evidence suggests that despite legislation requiring equitable representation in all aspects of screen media, and over thirty years of many “special initiatives” and training and mentorship programs, little progress has been made in the area of equitable representation in narrative programming.

  • Cinema As Witness to Modern History
Cinema as a Witness to History and a Product of History High school students today are often habitual and uncritical consumers of a vast array of media productions. For many young people, film and television are important sources of historical knowledge and form the basis of their understanding of the past and of contemporary social issues. The audio-visual media have in many ways become the new storytellers, constructing historical narratives that seek to engage the hearts, the minds, and the aesthetic sensibilities of viewers. Since the beginnings of cinema in the late 19th century, history has been represented and interpreted in a great variety of film genres. History is not only the explicit subject of archival primary sources, but it also plays an important role in Canadian and foreign documentary film, as well as in many Hollywood and international feature films. History is implicitly present in most of the repertoire of cinema, including drama, satire, biography, animation, independent films, propaganda films, and animation. Whether or not a cinematic message is overtly historical, films need to be critically analyzed and understood, not only for their explicit treatment of historical content, but also as historical archives in themselves. Films represent and express the values, understandings, culture, world view, and technological expertise of the time and place of their production. In this sense, cinema provides a rich instructional resource to support the development of media literacy, critical thinking, and historical consciousness. This course uses cinema as a teaching tool to help students go beyond the experience of film as entertainment or even as a source of information.
