Moving Beyond Prejudice: A 2‐Day Symposium on Race & Film

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH ::7PM – SCREENING “Prom Night in ” (FREE ADMISSION) Saint Mary’s University – 903 Robie Street – Scotiabank Conference Theatre – Room 201

::9PM – WORKSHOP on Prejudice & Diversity (FREE ADMISSION) with “Prom Night in Mississippi” Director Paul Saltzman Workshop will be followed with a reception sponsored by the office of the Dean of Arts, Saint Mary’s University Saint Mary’s University – 903 Robie Street – Scotiabank Conference Theatre – Room 201 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10TH ::10AM – MASTER CLASS on Documentary Filmmaking with “Prom Night in Mississippi” Director Paul Saltzman FREE ADMISSION – Space is limited – pre‐registration required at the bottom of this page NSCAD Film School – 1649 Brunswick Street

This two‐day symposium is presented by the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative in partnership with Saint Mary’s University and NSCAD University, and with the participation of DOC Atlantic: The Documentary Organization of Canada, the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts, and The Coast: Halifax’s Weekly.

As a part of African Heritage Month, we will hold two days of events focusing on prejudice, diversity, and filmmaking. We will bring documentary director Paul Saltzman to Halifax to screen his acclaimed documentary “Prom Night in Mississippi”. The documentary, which is narrated by , follows a group of 2008 high school seniors in Charleston, Mississippi as they prepare for their senior prom – the first racially integrated prom in Charleston’s history.

This special presentation of “Prom Night in Mississippi” will be immediately followed by a question and answer period with the director in which audience members can engage the filmmaker in a dialogue about the work.

Saltzman will then moderate a workshop called Moving Beyond Prejudice, which has been presented to more than 15,000 people around the world but never in Atlantic Canada. The workshop will invite participants to see a critically important part of our society—prejudice and diversity—with new eyes. The filmmaker believes that promoting equity begins with addressing the attitudes, beliefs, and prejudices we harbour within ourselves, which leads to greater tolerance of our differences and fairer treatment of others. This workshop will deliver both the inspiration and the necessary tools for this to occur using the understandings gained from the filmmaker’s experiences.

The following day, Saltzman will bring his extensive film production experience to a one‐day master class for filmmakers. Issues to be covered include the practical, conceptual, and narrative process of making “Prom Night in Mississippi” and his new film “Return to Mississippi”. Clips of both works will be screened. The director will draw on his extensive body of work to discuss documentary and social issues such as race, diversity, and prejudice, storytelling, documentary filmmaking, developing subject matter, and approaching complex interview and social subjects. The format will be interactive, with excerpts of other works screened throughout the day and the direction guided by the needs of the audience.
