OFFA is proud to present the World Festival Premiere of Sex, Fame, and Murder, which chronicles the quest for fame of alleged killer Luka Rocco Magnotta. On the evening of May 24, 2012, a gruesome murder took place. Video of this terrible act was intentionally filmed and posted on the internet, and body parts belonging to the victim were mailed to Government addresses and schools all over the country. When the crime was discovered, an international manhunt was underway for a man named Luka Rocco Magnotta. Luka's background, which includes porn film appearances, auditions for reality television shows, and the creation of a highly-visible online presence, would be the talk of the media for months to come. The documentary was filmed in Canada, the United States, London, Paris and Berlin and has exclusive never before seen access to the people and places that were key parts of this unfolding story. OFFA Festival Premiere 1:30 p.m. A Dress Rehearsal for an Execution Director: Bahman Tavoosi Country: Canada Production Company: Hades Films / Peacock Films Duration: 1 hour Cast: Inka Malovic, Stevan Jobert, Marie-Christine Labelle. Director and producer Bahman Tavoosi will introduce the film and lead a discussion following the film. The importance of image, and its indelible imprint on our cultural, social, and political psyches, is the basis for this exceptional film. A Dress Rehearsal for an Execution reveals both accurate depictions of history, and also the darkest moments of war and revolution. A Pulitzer- prize winning photograph of executions during The Iran Revolution of 1979 provides the setting for the flashbacks in this intense meta-documentary. The blend of narrative and documentary make us feel as though we are distanced from the realities of war. After the revolution was broken up, a group of revolutionaries were executed at a remote site. A photographer managed to photograph the execution, and was forced to remain anonymous for 26 years, living in fear for his life. The artist has revealed himself finally, and Director Tavoosi has chosen to recreate the photo through casting and location scouting. The casting appears to be for a play, and this is offset by the explicit, often disturbing genuine footage and photos from the Iranian Revolution, the Iraq War and other wartime images. In an interesting twist, we learn that the first two targets of the Revolution were a radio and a television station. It makes us appreciate and admire the story of a lone anonymous photographer even more. Canadian Festival Premiere 3:30 p.m. I’ll Follow You Down Director Richie Mehta Country: Canada Production Company: Resolute Films and Entertainment Duration: 93 minutes. Cast: Academy Award nominated actor Haley Joel Osment, Gillian Anderson, Victor Garber. A discussion about the film will follow the screening. Gabriel and Marika appear to have everything. He is an Ivy League educated physicist and professor, she a contemporary artist. Together they have found what everyone is looking for- true love. After years of marriage, they are still happy and adore their 9-year old son, Erol. Until the day Gabriel flies to Princeton for a conference and mysteriously disappears, without any explanation, and without leaving any clues as to where he has gone. In the years that follow, Marika is devastated by his disappearance, and Erol, now 21, follows in his father’s footsteps and studies physics with his grandfather, Sal. One day Sal discovers Gabriel’s old project files, tracing their contents back to his place of disappearance. Erol initially wants to leave the past behind him, but another tragedy propels him to follow Gabriel’s research to its staggering conclusion, even though it may mean saying goodbye to everything he has come to cherish. Filmed in Toronto and Hamilton. Gala - Canadian Festival Premiere 8:30 p.m. The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. Director: Felix Herngren Country: Sweden Production Company: Nice FLX Pictures Duration: 114mins, Swedish/German with English subtitles. Cast: Robert Gustafsson, Iwar Wiklander, David Wiberg. Following the film will be a discussion and Q&A. Based on the international bestseller by Jonas Jonasson, The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared focuses on the hilarious escapades of retired dynamite expert Allan Karlsson, played by renowned Swedish actor and comedian Robert Gustafsson. On his 100th birthday, he escapes his nursing home to resume his exciting past life. Allan ends up with a suitcase of stolen drug money and we experience his adventures eluding police and the drug runners who handed him the money to hold. Allan is no ordinary centenarian. He has led an adventurous life that we see in flashbacks that take him to exotic locations such as the Himalayas, and encounters with such famous people as Harry S. Truman and Winston Churchill. He becomes the saviour of the Manhatten Project , and he saves General Francisco Franco’s life in the Spanish revolution, setting the political future of Spain for the next generation. The film teaches us that ageism is an outdated concept, where old men are heroes and young men are fools. Definitely the Forrest Gump of Swedish films.
