  • NATIONAL FILM BOARD of CANADA FEATURED at Moma
The Museum off Modern Art 50th Anniversary NO. 16 ID FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 3, 1981 DOCUMENTARY FILMS FROM THE NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA FEATURED AT MoMA NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA: A RETROSPECTIVE is a three-part tribute presented by The Museum of Modern Art in recog nition of NFBC's 41 years Of exceptional filmmaking. PART TWO: DOCUMENTARY FILMS, running from March 26 through May 12 in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Auditorium, will trace the develop ment of the documentary form at NFBC, and will be highlighted by a selection of some of the finest films directed by Donald Brittain, whose work has won wide acclaim and numerous awards. PART TWO: DOCUMENTARY will get off to an auspicious start with twelve of Donald Brittain's powerful and unconventional portraits of exceptional individuals. Best known in this country for "Volcano: An Inquiry Into The Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry" (1976), Brittain brings his personal stamp of creative interpretation to such subjects as America's love affair with the automobile in "Henry Ford's America" (1976) ; the flamboyant Lord Thompson of Fleet Street (the newspaper baron who just sold the cornerstone of his empire, The London Times) in "Never A Backward Step" (1966); Norman Bethune, the Canadian poet/ doctor/revolutionary who became a great hero in China when he marched with Mao ("Bethune" 1964); and the phenomenal media hysteria sur rounding the famous quintuplets in "The Diorme Years" (1979) . "Memo randum" (1965) accompanies a Jewish glazier from Tcronto when he takes his son back to the concentration camp where he was interned, an emotion al and historical pilgrimage of strong impact and sensitivity.

Janine M: Hello, my name is Janine Marchessault. I'm a professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts at York University. Today is March 17, 2018. We are at the SCMS Conference in Toronto at the beautiful Sheraton. I have the great honor today of interviewing one of the Founders of Canadian Film studies, Seth Feldman. Seth is my colleague at York University. I have taken courses with Seth Feldman. I am involved in an ongoing research project to excavate the lost films of Expo 67, a project which Seth helped to initiate. Janine M: He is an author, a broadcaster, a film programmer and a professor, as I said, at York University. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in History. Before going on to study at SUNY Buffalo and help to manage the legendary Center for Media Studies, which was founded by the great Jerry O'Grady. He wrote the first, or one of the first, doctoral dissertations in English, on the films of Dziga Vertov. While working at the University of Western Ontario, he co-edited with Joyce Nelson, the first book devoted to Canadian cinema, the Canadian Film Reader. He is a founder and a past president of the Film Studies Association of Canada. He's published widely on Canadian Cinema, including Take Two, a second anthology on Canadian film. STAFF REPORT Date: February 13, 2012 To: Honorable Members of the Visual Arts Committee From: Mary Chou Re: Art on Market Street During the August 2011 Visual Arts Committee meeting, Commissioners approved Christina Empedocles’s proposal for an Art on Market Street poster series, but asked the artist to consider movies that spanned a variety of genres and to include more contemporary films. The original list consisted of the following: The Birds (1963), The Maltese Falcon (1941), Harold and Maude (1971), Vertigo (1958), Escape from Alcatraz (1979), Bullitt (1968), and Dirty Harry (1971). Below is a description of the artist’s explanation for her primary list of movies for her poster series, and her secondary list, if she is unable to secure permissions for movies in the primary list. Description of Poster Series With this primary list of films for the Art on Market Street poster series, the goal was to narrow down and select a list of movies from several different decades and a host of different genres, including major motion pictures as well as independent films, each with one thing in common: they'd be the best movies of their respective eras and genres to feature San Francisco itself as a prominent character. The images created from the following six classic motion pictures would include a poster from the film, as well as a collage of key visual elements associated with that film, and should be instantly recognizable to just about any longtime City resident, film buff, or keen-eyed observer. These visual elements would be extensions of the components of the posters, comprised of key props, characters (dependent on permission), and possibly quotes, bits of map, or small shots of various locations.

32 The Role of The Beatles in Popularizing Indian Music and Culture in the West Rodrigo Guerrero Faculty Advisors: Dr. Charles Brewer, Dr. Sarah Eyerly, and Dr. Douglass Seaton College of Music Abstract: The Beatles were responsible for several long-lasting innovations that shaped the history of pop music and Western culture in general. As a British rock band that dominated the popular music scene during the 1960s, they made one of their most significant, yet sometimes overlooked, contributions through the incorporation of elements from Indian culture in their music and lyrics. This essay discusses the role that the Beatles played in introducing and popularizing certain features of Indian culture, and specifically Indian music, in the Western hemisphere. I first describe their relationship with Indian culture. In this section, I bring forth questions, such as why they became interested in this culture, why they decided to go on a spiritual retreat to India, and how the trip influenced their thoughts about foreign culture. After that, this essay analyzes the influence of Indian culture and Indian music on the Beatles’ lyrics and music, respectively. Finally, I will illuminate the lasting effect that this cross- fertilization had in subsequent years. he 1960s was a decade of experimentation in popular music. The Beatles, the British rock band that dominated the popular music scene Tduring this decade, was responsible for long-lasting innovations that would shape the history and style of pop music and Western culture. One of their most significant, yet overlooked, contributions to Western culture was the incorporation of Indian musical elements into their songs.

CHAPTER THREE The Papalagi Contributors: Malama Meleisea Penelope Schoeffel Meleisea Isalei Va 'ai Gatoloai Peseta S. Sio Sofara Aveau Salale Salale I'iga Suafole Tanuvasa Tavale Explorers from Europe in the Eighteenth Century There are hundreds of legends and genealogies which record contact and intermarriage between Samoans, Tongans and Fijians. These are supported by historical records from the eighteenth century, before Samoans had established regular contacts with Europeans. For example, Sanalala, an ancestor of Salamasina, was a son of the then Tui Tonga's daughter. There were many other important, chiefly descend-ants of Tui Tonga; the mother of Salamasina was Vaetoifaga, who married the Tui Tonga. This Tui Tonga also married Taupoimasina, the daughter of Muli'agatele Lefono of Amoa. Another legend tells of Leutogitupa'itea, the daughter of Lafailapaitagato from Pouliafata in the village of Vaisala, who married Tui Tonga Niutamatou. Their son, known as To'osega or Fa'asega, brought the ao title, Tonumaipe'a, to Samoa. To this day there is a place called Neiafu in Western Savai'i and a place of the same name on the island ofVava'u in Tonga. Another descendant of Tui Tonga in Samoa was Le'aumoana, whose mother Maupenei was the daughter of La'ulunofovaleane. She married Tui Tonga Puipuifatu, the son of Tui Tonga Vakafuhu, whose wives, Popoai and Taufaito'o, were from the family of Leali'ifanovalevale of Samoa. Malietoa 41 Taufapapa was another Samoan chief descended from Tui Tonga. His mother, Silepea, was descended from Mata'afa of Faleata and Malietoa Sagagaimuli. She married Tui Tonga Takalaua.
