Biographical Note

Descendants of Irish immigrants to North America, members of the Sullivan family became prominent in San Antonio, Texas business, professional, and military circles, beginning in the late 1800s. One of the first of these immigrants, Daniel Sullivan, was born in 1844 in Meenygorman, in County , Ireland, to Timothy and Ellen Sullivan. With his younger sister Anne, Daniel Sullivan came to the Alexandria, Louisiana in 1850, to live with his uncle, also named Daniel Sullivan (1805-1871). The children accompanied their uncle when he moved to Indianola, Texas in 1857, to establish a general merchandise and grocery business. After serving in the Confederate army during the Civil War, young Daniel Sullivan returned to Indianola to work in his uncle's business, taking over its operation upon the latter's death.

In 1868, Daniel Sullivan married his first cousin, Anne (1842-1904), who also came from Ireland to Louisiana as a child, to the household of her uncle, the elder Daniel Sullivan. Daniel and Anne Cotter Sullivan and their seven children, moved from Indianola to San Antonio in 1882, where Sullivan established a banking business, under the name O'Connor and Sullivan. He later became the sole owner, and the name of the business was changed to D. Sullivan and Co., growing into one of the city's prominent banking businesses, and remaining in operation into the 1940s. Daniel Sullivan remained active in his business until his death on November 30, 1931.

The children of Daniel and Anne Cotter Sullivan were:

1. William Cusack Sullivan (1868-1930), attended St Mary's College in San Antonio, and the University of Pennsylvania's Peirce School of business; worked in the family business, and pursued a number of outside business interests.

2. Eleanor Alice Sullivan (1870-1931), who married James Robert Collins.

3. Annie Marie Sullivan (1872-1956), who was educated at Notre Dame College in Baltimore and the Sacred Heart Convent in Paris; returned to live in San Antonio.

4. Daniel Joseph Sullivan (1874-1948), attended St. Mary's College and Rock Hill College in Maryland; also worked in his father's business.

5. John Cotter Sullivan (1875-1966), attended St. Mary's College, Rock Hill College, and Harvard Law School; practiced law in San Antonio; married Florence Fletcher in 1909.

6. Mary Elizabeth Sullivan (1878-1967), attended Notre Dame College and Sacred Heart Convent; married Gen. John Lincoln Clem (1851-1937).

7. Walter Sullivan (1881-1905), attended St. Mary's College, Harvard, and Yale University.
