STRABANE IN WORLD WAR 1 As reported in The Strabane Chronicle & The Strabane Weekly News July 1914 – November 1919 Thanks are due to all those who contributed to the compilation of material for this research project. The group painstakingly combed the microfilm copies of the Strabane Chronicle and Strabane Weekly news and selected material and these included John Rogan, James Johnston, Joseph O’Kane, Hugh McGarrigle, Kathleen Patton, Chris McDermott, Pat McGuigan, William Allen, Ronnie Johnston, Michael Kennedy and John Dooher. Thanks are also due to Ms Geraldine Casey for her assistance. The group is grateful to the staff of Strabane Library for their unfailing help and to Libraries N.I. for making the resources available. The increase in the cost of living and the increased prices which the farmers was getting for his produce had been mainly instrumental in bringing about increased wages. The wages however are still very low. The usual daily wage current in 1913 were for men 2s to 3s 6d, for women 1s 6d to 3s. RESERVES CALLED UP IMMEDIATELY At the start of WW1 58,000 Irishmen were already enlisted in the British Regular Army or Navy – 21,000 serving regular soldiers, 18,000 reservists, 12,000 in the Special Reserve, 5,000 Naval ratings and 2,000 officers.

  • A House Divided: the Murrays of the Border and the Rise and Decline of a Small Irish House John Murray Left More Formal Records
A house divided: the Murrays of the border and the rise and decline of a small Irish house John Murray left more formal records than did many of his family. Born in 1870, his death at home in 1953 was attributed to the senility in old age for which, he is still just about remembered.1 He was married twice, first to Catherine Seery, in 1895, in the County Fermanagh hamlet of Teemore.2 Almost twenty-three years later, he stood at the same alter, and married Margaret Fee.3 He was widowed twice as well. Tuberculosis (phthisis pulmonalis) took Catherine in the summer of 1910.4 She had been certified with the illness just five months earlier, weeks before the birth of their fifth and final child – her third son, John Joseph.5 Catherine Murray’s was one of a little over ten thousand Irish deaths attributed to the disease that year.6 Although it could and did afflict all classes, it was and is primarily an illness of the poor and under-resourced. By the time that Margaret Murray died in 1953 her husband’s memory had already gone. As the owner of land, his name appears in valuation books, as it does in both of just two Irish censuses that are extant and currently available – 1901 and 1911. He was listed 1 Death of John Murray, Derrylin, 20 Nov. 1953 (General Register Office Northern Ireland, hereafter GRONI, D/1953/152/1019/15/144). Interview with Patricia Brady, Teemore, 13 Jan. 2017. 2 Marriage of John Murray and Catherine Seery, Derrylin, 25th Feb.

The signing of the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement in 1998, however, promised a peace process that would bring an end to the militancy of previous decades and the establishment of new political arrangements that would see the competing groupings of Irish Nationalism and Ulster Unionism share power in a devolved Northern Ireland assembly. Despite much progress in the 20 years since the Agreement, many problems remain, and often bitter sectarian tensions continue to blight Northern Irish society and block progress toward full implementation of both
