We explored all of these and more during our 25-day adventure across the country. Highlights were many and included Orange River Francolin, thousands of Cape Gannets, multiple Secretarybirds, stunning Knysna Turaco, Ground Woodpecker, Botha’s Lark, Bush Blackcap, Cape Parrot, Aardvark, Aardwolf, Caracal, Oribi and Giant Bullfrog, along with spectacular scenery, great food and excellent accommodation throughout. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Despite havoc-wreaking weather that delayed flights on the other side of the world, everyone managed to arrive (just!) in South Africa for the start of our keenly-awaited tour. We began our 25-day cross-country exploration with a drive along Zaagkuildrift Road. This unassuming stretch of dirt road is well-known in local birding circles and can offer up a wide range of species thanks to its variety of habitats – which include open grassland, acacia woodland, wetlands and a seasonal floodplain. The Avifauna of Two Woodlands in Southeast Tanzania

Christensen In Tanzania Brachystegia or miombo woodland occupies about two-thirds of the country including the central plateau to the north and the south eastern plateau (Lind & Morrison 1974). Along the coast more luxuriant woodlands are found in what White (1983) terms the Zanzibar-Inhambane regional mosaic floristic region. This highly complex vegetation comprises unique types of forest, thicket, woodland, bushland and grassland, interspersed with areas presently under cultivation and fallow (Hawthorne 1993). The coastal woodlands are usually deciduous or semi-deciduous but contain some evergreen species and often merge with coastal thickets, scrub forest and coastal forest (Hawthorne 1993, Vollesen 1994). The avifauna of miombo woodlands has been described for Zambia (e.g. Benson & Irwin 1966) and Zimbabwe (e.g. Vernon 1968, 1984, 1985), while little has been published on the birds of the coastal woodlands. An exception is Stjernstedt (1970) who reported on the birds in lush and dense Brachystegia microphylla vegetation in a sea of miombo in southeast Tanzania. Here we report our observations of birds in two woodlands in coastal southeast Tanzania, one of which harboured miombo trees. We present information on the number of species encountered during the fieldwork, and compare the avifauna of the two sites. We discuss possible causes for the differences observed and provide new information on habitat preferences for some of the species we recorded at these sites. Johnson School of Biological and Conservation Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg, Private Bag X01, Scottsville 3209, South Africa Received 8 September 2009; received in revised form 16 February 2010; accepted 4 March 2010 Abstract Most of the species in the large African genus Kniphofia have floral traits that conform to the bird pollination syndrome, however there has been very little empirical work to confirm that birds are effective pollinators of Kniphofia species. From selective exclusion experiments, behavioural observations and pollen load analyses, we identified Amethyst Sunbirds (Chalcomitra amethystina) and Malachite Sunbirds (Nectarinia famosa) as the primary pollinators in two populations of Kniphofia laxiflora, with bees playing a smaller role. Bird visitors obtain moderate volumes (∼9 µl) of relatively concentrated (∼15%) hexose-rich nectar in the flowers. This species is shown to be genetically self- incompatible, and thus reliant on pollinator visits for seed set. Although mountain pride butterflies (Aeropetes tulbaghia) have been identified as important pollinators of this species at two other populations, they did not occur at the two populations we studied. © 2010 SAAB. The Birds of the Dar Es Salaam Area, Tanzania

Howell INTRODUCTION Although the birds of other areas in Tanzania have been studied in detail, those of the coast near Dar es Salaam have received relatively little recent attention. Ruggles-Brise (1927) published a popular account of some species from Dar es Salaam, and Fuggles-Couchman (1939,1951, 1953, 1954, 1962) included the area in a series of papers of a wider scope. More recently there have been a few other stu dies dealing with particular localities (Gardiner and Gardiner 1971), habitats (Stuart and van der Willigen 1979; Howell 1981), or with individual species or groups (Harvey 1971–1975; Howell 1973, 1977). Britton (1978, 1981) has docu mented specimens collected in the area previous to 1967 by Anderson and others. The purpose of this paper is to draw together data from published reports, unpu blished records, museum specimens and our own observations on the frequency, habitat, distribution and breeding of the birds of the Dar es Salaam area, here defi ned as the portion of the mainland within a 64-km radius of Dar es Salaam, inclu ding the small islands just offshore (Fig. 1). It includes Dar es Salaam District and portions of two others, Kisarawe and Bagamoyo. Zanzibar has been omitted because its unusual avifauna has been reviewed (Pakenham 1979). Most of the mainland areas are readily accessible from Dar es Salaam by road and the small islands may be reached by boat. The geography of the area is described in Sutton (1970). -

The functional role of birds as pollinators in southern Cape fynbos. Kellyn J. Whitehead A thesis presented in fulfilment of the academic requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Ecological Sciences At the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa January 2018 1 ABSTRACT Nectarivorous birds, particularly sunbirds, are important pollinators of plants in the Cape Flora of South Africa, being responsible for pollinating approximately 5% of plant species. However, interactions between plants and nectarivorous birds in the eastern part of the Cape Floristic Region have not received much attention. This study focussed on two putatively bird-pollinated plant species found within the Nature’s Valley area, namely Kniphofia uvaria and Chasmanthe aethiopica. The breeding systems were determined for each species and, due to their patchy population distribution, potential Allee effects on plant fecundity were also tested for. Flowering phenology in the area was also examined to test for associations between flowering of bird-pollinated plant species and the temporal presence of nectarivorous birds. Selective exclusion experiments showed that sunbirds were the main pollinators of K. uvaria and C. aethiopica – fruit set and the number of viable seeds were much higher for untreated (open control) individuals where birds could visit flowers freely, compared to caged individuals which only allowed for insect visitation. Very few seeds developed when plants of the two species were bagged to exclude all pollinators, indicating that the species are not capable of autonomous self-fertilization. Fruit and seed set were determined for patches of K. uvaria and C. aethiopica in order to test for potential Allee effects. -

In Gabon, this conflict revolves around crop-raiding by protected wildlife, especially elephants. Elephants’ crop-raiding threaten livelihoods and undermines conservation efforts. Gabon is currently using monetary compensation and electric fences to address this human-elephant conflict. This thesis compares the impacts of the human-elephant conflict in Pongara and Ivindo National Parks based on their idiosyncrasy. Information was gathered through systematic review of available literature and publications, observation, and semi-structured face to face interviews with local residents, park employees, and experts from the National Park Agency. -

12 Stable Isotope Research in Southern African Birds Craig T. Symes School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences University of the Witwatersrand South Africa 1. Introduction The use of stable isotopes in ornithological research has risen exponentially in the past few decades, mainly due to strides in technology that permit the processing of large numbers of samples at lower and lower cost. However, most likely because of the availability of resources in “developed countries”, studies are concentrated in predominantly Palaearctic and Nearctic countries. Africa is largely neglected but offers unique opportunities for both collaborative research on a global scale, and novel studies in unchartered fields. This chapter provides a brief summary of, 1) stable isotopes and some of the applications thereof in ornithology, 2) examples of the type of work currently completed and underway in Africa and how it might be applicable in a global perspective, and, 3) prospects for future studies in the use of stable isotopes for understanding African ornithology. Given the high diversity of birds in southern Africa (at least 950 species), associated with at least seven terrestrial biomes, e.g. fynbos, succulent Karoo, Nama-Karoo, grassland, savanna, forest, and thicket, numerous opportunities exist for addressing research questions of biological interest and conservation concern. 2. Stable isotopes 2.1 What are stable isotopes? The atom of an element is defined by the number of protons within the nucleus which, together with the neutrons it contains, define its mass (Hoefs, 2009). For a particular element, additional neutrons within the nucleus will add mass to an atom but will not change its chemistry (Hoefs, 2009). -

Namibia & Botswana: From the NAMIB to the OKAVANGO A Tropical Birding Set Departure September 5–20, 2015 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos taken by Ken Behrens during this trip TOUR SUMMARY Our Namibia and northern Botswana tour has long been one of our most popular, and for good reason. The Namib escarpment and desert hold a suite of endemic birds that is shared only with adjacent Angola. These include the handsome Hartlaub’s Francolin, taxonomic oddity Rockrunner, boldly pied White-tailed Shrike, and cryptic Dune Lark. Farther north and east, the Okavango system holds a great wealth of birds, including two of the continent’s most wanted species: White-backed Night-Heron and Pel’s Fishing-Owl. There is no better spot in Africa for these scarce and shy birds. Although they expect the special birds, birders are often also surprised by this tour’s richness of mammals. Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s great parks, and is at its best during the late dry season timing of this tour. The spectacle of thousands of big mammals crowding together for precious mouthfuls of water while trying to avoid the big predators that await in ambush, ranks among Earth’s great natural spectacles. And Etosha is just one of several sites on this trip that always have lots of mammals. But the real thing that makes tours in Namibia and Botswana special is not the specific birds and mammals that these countries hold, Namibia & Botswana September 5 – 20, 2015 but rather a magical quality to the landscapes of this part of the world. -

TRIP REPORT: The Best of SOUTH AFRICA October 15-31 2018 The Best of SOUTH AFRICA Birding Safari October 15-31, 2018 Tour leaders: Josh Engel and David Nkosi Click here for the trip photo gallery Next trip: October 10-26, 2020 South Africa never fails to amaze. From the spectacular scenery and endemic birds of the Cape to the megafauna-filled wilderness of Kruger National Park, every single day brings something new, surprising, and awe-inspiring. This trip exceeded expectations—over 400 species of birds and an incredible 60 species of mammals, all seen while staying in interesting, varied, and excellent accommodations, eating delicious food, and thoroughly enjoying all aspects of traveling in South Africa. It’s hard to know where to start with bird and animal highlights. There are, of course, the most sought-after birds, like Protea Canary, Cape Rockjumper, Black Harrier, Rudd’s Lark, Black-eared Sparrowlark, Southern Black Korhaan, and Blue Korhaan. There were also the incredible bird experiences—the Shy Albatrosses surrounding our pelagic boat, the Cape Sugarbird singing from atop of king protea flower, the nest-building Knysna Turacos, the Water Thick-knees trying to chase a Water Monitor away from their nest. Mammals take a front seat in South Africa, too. We had incredible sightings of Leopard and Lion in Kruger, numerous White and a single Black Rhinoceros, along with many encounters with Elephant, Giraffes, and other iconic African animals. But we also saw many awesome small mammals, including Meerkat, Large- and Small- spotted Genet, White-tailed Mongoose, and a Cape Clawless Otter munching on a fish. -
Namibia and Botswana
Namibia and Botswana 8 – 23 September 2012 Guide: Steve Braine INTRODUCTION A very successful trip was undertaken before the annual migrants had arrived through Namibia and a portion of Botswana incorporating a section of the Okavango pan handle, (the area which widens out to form the impressive Okavango swamps). The trip entailed driving a total distance of 3503 km starting in the capital of Namibia, Windhoek and ending at this same destination. During the trip a total of 345 species were seen, a further five species were heard and not seen, 42 various mammals and 9 species of reptiles were also recorded. Arlan and Linda arrived at Hosea Kutako airport outside Windhoek at 12h00 on the 8 September and we then transferred to our overnight accommodation in Windhoek, the Onganga Guesthouse. The rest of the afternoon we spent around the Avis dam on the outskirts of Windhoek and thereafter we visited the Gammams sewerage works. We recorded a total of 60 species for the first day and around Avis Dam we had good views of Burnt-necked Eremomela, a soaring African White-backed Vulture, perched views of Black-winged (Black-shouldered) Kite, Rock Kestrel, Black-faced (cheeked) Waxbill, Pririt Batis, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Chestnut-vented Tit Babbler (Warbler), and along the shore line African Pipit, Black-winged Stilt, Blacksmith’s Plover (Lapwing), Little Egret and Three-banded and Kittlitz’s Plover. We also had very brief views of a pair of Orange-river Francolins and African Quail Finch; the former flushed from near the pathway by ourselves the latter flushed by some folks walking their dogs! When reaching our parked vehicle after our walk we had our first pair of Monteiro’s Hornbills fly by. -
