International scholarly conference THE PEREDVIZHNIKI ASSOCIATION OF ART EXHIBITIONS. ON THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDATION ABSTRACTS 19th May, Wednesday, morning session Tatyana YUDENKOVA State Tretyakov Gallery; Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts, Moscow Peredvizhniki: Between Creative Freedom and Commercial Benefit The fate of Russian art in the second half of the 19th century was inevitably associated with an outstanding artistic phenomenon that went down in the history of Russian culture under the name of Peredvizhniki movement. As the movement took shape and matured, the Peredvizhniki became undisputed leaders in the development of art. They quickly gained the public’s affection and took an important place in Russia’s cultural life. Russian art is deeply indebted to the Peredvizhniki for discovering new themes and subjects, developing critical genre painting, and for their achievements in psychological portrait painting. The Peredvizhniki changed people’s attitude to Russian national landscape, and made them take a fresh look at the course of Russian history. Their critical insight in contemporary events acquired a completely new quality. Touching on painful and challenging top-of-the agenda issues, they did not forget about eternal values, guessing the existential meaning behind everyday details, and seeing archetypal importance in current-day matters. Their best paintings made up the national art school and in many ways contributed to shaping the national identity. The Peredvizhniki

  • Soviet Museology During the Cultural Revolution: an Educational Turn, 1928-1933
Soviet Museology During the Cultural Revolution: An Educational Turn, 1928-1933 Masha Chlenova The author Masha Chlenova (PhD, Columbia University) is a New York based art historian and curator specializing in modern art with a focus on Russian modernism. Her writing has appeared in the journal October and in exhibition catalogs published by The Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern, Royal Academy of Art and Art Institute of Chicago. She recently contributed a chapter to a monograph on the Polish abstract artist of the 1920s-30s Waclaw Szpakowski and curated the first extensive exhibition of his work in the United States. She currently works as freelance Curator at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and teaches art history at New School University. Abstract The article examines a radical reform of Soviet art museums during the late 1920s and early 1930s both on their own distinct ideological terms, as institutions that would illustrate Marxist dialectical view of historical development, and in the context of a broader international drive to modernize art museums and turn them into primarily educational institutions accessible and attractive to the broader population. A case study of a radically innovative exhibition entitled Art on Soviet and Revolutionary Themes, organized by the young Marxist art historian and curator Aleksei Fedorov-Davydov at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow in June 1930, reveals the degree to which the Soviet art historian’s innovative and polemical curatorial approach finds parallels with the educational strategies of one of the most iconic examples of modern displays in western museums, Cubism and Abstract Art, organized by Alfred Barr, Jr.

Foreword from the head of Moscow Metro 3 Events of the year 4 Performance indicators 20 Metro staff 30 Development and technical upgrade 44 Safety and security 50 International activity 56 Future development 62 1 The year 2012 can certainly be described as a year of great accomplishments, including the opening of new stations, reconstruction of existing facilities and metro technical systems. This year we have introduced a new section “Novogireevo” – “Novokosino” on the Kalininskaya line”, that allows now quick, convenient and reliable mode of transport to be provided to almost 200,000 inhabitants of the district. Besides, the metro map shows the long-awaited station ”Alma-Atinskaya” on the Zamoskvoretskaya line and the station “Pyatnitskoye shosse” in the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Foreword from the head line. The future of Moscow transport system is unthinkable without development of the metro, which plays a key role in the city’s public transport of Moscow Metro system. The Moscow Metro management carries out all the changes planned and appointed by the Moscow Government by paying as much attention to the demand of Muscovites and guests of the capital as possible. By 2020, 67 new stations are planned to be constructed. At present, we prioritize the construction of the Exterior interchange circuit line with the phased commissioning of line sections, the extension of the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya line from station “Maryina roshcha” to the northern areas of the city by 2015. Also the construction of the new Kozhukhovskaya line from the station “Aviamotornaya” to the station “Nekrasovka.
