I have always been a fan of diminished considerably since neighbourhood watch started trade associations, which provide a genuine service to their thirty one years ago, campaigning for target hardening and members and at the same time, offer the public the the success of that campaign is in no small part due to reassurance that the products and services that they are improved home security provided by members of the MLA buying are of a high quality and fit for purpose. May I take this opportunity to wish all your members a In my working life as a police officer in London, I was successful year ahead and may our two organisations frequently asked to recommend lock fitting companies to continue to work closely together the victims of burglary, and although I was prevented from naming individual companies, I had no hesitation in saying that whoever it was, they should be a member of the MLA. And now as Chairman of the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Association for England & Wales, I have no James Maddan hesitation in giving the same response when asked. NHWN Chair There is a natural synergy between our two organisations. We both are concerned about the security of residences and businesses within the community and we both want the best for our members. 3 Master Locksmiths Association Handbook 2013 MLA Overview The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) is the leading trade association for the locksmithing industry. A truly not-for-profit organisation promoting the skill and integrity of its approximately 1,400 members, it was established over 50 years ago to set and promote standards of conduct, practice and materials within locksmithing. Recognised as the authoritative body for locksmithing by the police, home office, British Standards Institute (BSI), The Risk Insight, Strategy and Control Authority (RISCAuthority; formally IPCRes, the UK property insurers' technical group) and Building Research Establishment (BRE), the MLA also has a subsidiary company, Sold Secure, which performs certification of security products via manual attack testing. MLA member companies, who undergo strict vetting (including criminal record checks, regular inspections to ensure quality etc), are able to provide advice based on knowledge and experience, recommend products that are fit for purpose as well as provide professional installation and maintenance services. Details on your nearest MLA approved company can be found in the directory section of this handbook or on our website www.locksmiths.co.uk. As a City & Guilds and HABC approved centre, the MLA also provides training from its purpose built training facility based at the company headquarters in Daventry, consisting of a classroom type environment for theory work and fully equipped workshop for the hands-on practical elements (N.B. due to the content of some courses they may only be open to MLA members). Courses currently include general locksmithing; opening; access control, safe engineering and Auto Locksmithing, with others currently under development. The MLA has been fundamental in the project of developing a nationally recognised qualification for the industry and is working with the sector skills body Skills for Security to progress this into the development of a formal apprenticeship framework. Work through a PR and marketing campaign as well as work with third parties such as Trading Standards, was carried out to help combat this and prevent the general public from being taken in by rogue traders. Unfortunately with the current economic climate it’s something that we feel will need to be carried on into 2013 and increases the importance of people checking the MLA website to ensure the company they are using is indeed an MLA licensed locksmith. 2012 also saw the successful launch of a new membership category for practicing locksmiths which has seen great take up by those who meet the criteria. The Associated Locksmith category, aimed at those who’ve been full time locksmiths for at least 3 years and may not have been fully Once again I find myself repeating the same words from last aware of what the MLA is about and what’s required for time - what a 12 months it’s been! entry, has attracted quality locksmiths who have seen it as a stepping stone towards full membership. We also enjoyed Development of the qualification and apprenticeship record retention rates evidentially the significant benefits of framework progressed, with work going in to getting being an MLA member are proving their worth. approved centre status from our chosen awarding body (HABC) and putting the requirements in place to be able to We also developed a new approach to the BLI exam, work alongside Skills for Security, who draw down the introducing an element of coaching to help established and funding from government, to provide the assessor criteria experienced locksmiths to understand what’s involved and for this. It’s a shame that there’s no formal off the job brush up on their skills. There’s an article on this within this training as part of the apprenticeship itself but there’s always handbook and if you’re looking to take a locksmith exam the top rate training courses that the MLA provides anyway. then I’d recommend you read it, as it could be exactly what Whilst it’s due to be officially launched at MLA Expo in you’re looking for. September this year, we’ll be looking to take on learners from around May time which should fit in with the academic timeframe for school leavers. It’ll be great to finally have a formal route to entry for what is finally becoming a recognised profession. Our PR activity continued at pace, whilst there’s an article outlining the PR activities elsewhere in this handbook, I was pleased to see the reach that the activities had, ranging from national newspapers and Radio coverage, through to regional newspapers and TV, along with plenty of coverage in the specialist media (FM, House & Home etc.) we’ve seen awareness of the association and members promoted far and wide. Promotion to the Police and insurers was maintained at a high level with a number of presentations and workshops having been delivered, and relationships with the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network and Which? were developed and have led to significant coverage. The major accomplishment for the year has got to be however the launch of the MLA’s new website.
