It is one of Azamara's Rail and Sail programs, which showcases New Zealand’s South Island, with a full-day South Island train journey aboard the TranzAlpine Railway from the Canterbury Plains to Greymouth in the foothills of the Southern Alps. Here, experience glacier heli-flightseeing with a landing on Mt. Cook—New Zealand’s highest peak—which is, no doubt, your journey’s greatest highlight. DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY Day 1 This morning, you’ll be met at the port for a city highlights tour as you make your way to the airport for your flight to Christchurch. Upon arrival, enjoy an orientation tour of the city before arriving and checking in at your hotel. The remainder of the day will be at leisure. Dinner is on your own this evening. Explore FurtherSM Day 2 After breakfast, you’ll be escorted to the train station for the scenic TranzAlpine Rail journey to Greymouth. Considered one of the world’s greatest train journeys, you’ll see epic vistas of the Southern Alps, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, traverse the Canterbury Plains, and see miles of native beach forest as you travel across the 139 miles. Lunch will be served onboard. Once you arrive at Greymouth, you will board your coach for a very scenic drive down the West Coast to Franz Josef you’ll be taken to where your hotel where is and dinner will be served this evening. Day 3 Today, after breakfast, meet your guide for the trip of a lifetime as you take a helicopter over Mount Cook National Park. During your flight you’ll see the park’s vast glaciers and snowfields, and the ancient waters of the Tasman Glacier Lake before flying the length of the Tasman Glacier—New Zealand’s longest glacier. Then, snow-land on New Zealand's highest peak, Aoraki/Mount Cook, and cross to the West Coast for formidable views of the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. Once back, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel. This evening, dinner will also be at a local restaurant. Day 4 After breakfast, you’ll be assisted back to the Hokitika airport for your flight to Christchurch where, upon arrival, you’ll make your connecting onward homeward flight. You will be required to walk up/down inclines and stairs, over paved, cobbled, and unpaved surfaces. We suggest you wear flat, non-slip walking shoes. This Land Journey is recommended to guests who are able to walk for extended periods, at a moderate pace. Guests who utilize a wheelchair may not be able to participate in all activities as described. If booking independently, ensure you have the correct city and arrival date prior to reserving your flights. Azamara is not responsible for any disruption to your Land Journey due to independently-booked air issues. All programs have a limited capacity and are available on a first-come basis. A minimum number of guests is required to operate this Land Journey. Should that minimum not be met, the program will be repriced and guests will have the option to cancel or repurchase at the new selling price. Cancellation penalties begin 120 days prior to sailing and will include any non-refundable air costs.
