Editor: Wendy Griggs c/- PO BOX 644 REDCLIFFE Q 4020 3284 0049 Our President, Helen Yench, welcomed everyone to an afternoon of catching [email protected] up with shipmates and a lunch that was as lovely to look at as it was to eat. Our guest speaker was LCDR Anne Mena, XO at HMAS Moreton, who enter- tained us with tales of her Navy career. The camaraderie which is one of the four pillars of our parent organisation, the Naval Association, was on display in a big way. Tatteralls Club was the venue for our luncheon this year and it was voted a great success by all attendees and as a result, we have booked it again for our lunch in 2020 which will be on 7 November.

Helen Yench, who is also State Secretary of the Naval Association, presented Long Service Certificates to those of the following who were in attendance at the luncheon. Those not in attendance will received them by mail. Lunch With Our Ladies At Hervey Bay Once again our Judy Hunter has organised a gathering of Navy ladies — and their partners — in Hervey Bay.

A pay-as-you-go lunch will be enjoyed at the Beach House Hotel on Wednesday 27 of November. At 1130 hrs.

Past Hervey Bay gatherings have been enjoyed in a casual environment by around 15-20 ladies. Judy wel- comes everyone and would love to include any ladies who live in the area and is expecting approximately 40 people this year.

Our Treasurer and Assistant Secretary will be travelling up the coast to join the locals, as will five other of our ladies from the south east corner. Two of these ladies will take their partners along for the outing.

Whilst it is not necessary to get your name on the list, it would be helpful to Judy when making reservations if she has a rough of idea of how many to expect. You can contact Judy by email : [email protected] or by phone on 4125 1915/0427 675 953.

4 REPORTS FROM OUR EVENTS CALENDAR

On 30 October, thanks to a Veterans Health Week grant from DVA for Veterans’ Health Week and to a lot of Movie Outing hard work by Margie Gadd, our Welfare Officer, 20 or so of our ladies went to the mov- ies. Event Cinemas at Chermside Shopping Centre provided the movie and morning tea. The morning tea was enjoyed by all. Some were ambivalent about the movie : After The Wedding, but a lot of good conversation was held dis- cussing its merits or other- wise. Hopefully, same time next year we will do it again.

Reserve Forces Day Wondai

On the weekend of 5-7 July Wendy Griggs and Diana Burns met up with local member, Heather Selway, in Wondai to attend the festivi- ties and commemorations encompassing Reserve Forces Day. Wondai is a nice town out near Kingaroy. The program consisted of inter-service lawn bowls, a meet and greet followed by dinner at the RSL, then on the Sunday morning a wreath laying and march leading to a short remembrance service. We arrived too late to join the lawns bowls – fortunately — but watched as the all-army contingent was divided into Army Navy and Air Force to compete for the trophy. We are not sure who won, but lots of laughs were had by the rink. The meet and greet and the dinner at the RSL were very enjoyable and new friends were made. We were made very welcome as the only fe- males and the only non-army veterans to participate. The organisers of the occasion were delighted that Navy Women had sent representatives to what is now one of the few last remaining com- memorations of Reserve Forces Day in Queensland. Our secretary is hoping that we can field a bigger group to attend next year for what was a very enjoyable weekend.

5 WRAN Margaret Hall Memorial 26 July was the 75th anniversary of the death of WRAN Margaret Hall. WRAN Hall was the only women listed on the Honour Board for WWII at HMAS Moreton and the anniversary of her death was commemorated on the date by the planting of a tree in the CMDR Lachlan King Memorial Garden at HMAS Moreton. The tree was planted by Fay Royle who served with Margaret at HMAS Moreton. Fay recalls having to learn the slow march to be in the Honour Guard at the funeral. This was
