'Bring 'em back alive' Campbell remembers Frank Buck

By George Campbell Illustrated by Ann Winterbotham Almost a half-centuFy ago, when I was 15, Frank Buck gave me my first job. I was his "zoological assistant." That meant that for an 84-hour week (yes, 84 hours --12 hours a day for seven days each week), 1 was allowed to become acquainted with Minnie, the little Asian elephant; Jiggs, the immense orangutan; a pair of 23-foot reticulated pythons; spitting cobras; black leopards; tigers, too; and many more. I learned a lot about animals -- and people. Frank Buck was at the zenith of his career. His name was, in those days, a household word. I find today that young people, when I mention his name, say "Frank Who?" But both of my readers will remember him and his books and films called Bring 'Em Back Alive and Wild Cargo. When I was 151 got into a lot of trouble in Evanston where I lived, just outside Chicago. My "zoo" was infamous in the area and became especially so one day when a snake got loose, crawled into the home of a neighbor and was found resting comfortably in her bed. .
