Dear Friends,

In 2019 we served 10,383 girls in Western and Southern . Our Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a one-of-a-kind leadership development program for girls, with proven results. It is based on time-tested methods and research-backed programming that help girls take the lead — in their own lives and in the world. Jackie ford We help every girl discover who she can be and what she can do, wherever she chooses to put her energy. The journey begins with the Girl Scout environment itself. To discover who she can be, she needs access to caring and wise adults who both inspire her and respect her. Our 5,000 volunteers do this every day!

As we moved into our 2020 membership year, we noted that our volunteers and girls are returning to Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana in record numbers. We ranked 14th in the country for retention of our girl members and our first-year retention was the highest it has been in 10 years. In addition, our fund development efforts surpassed all their goals and we increased volunteer participation on committees, task groups and think tanks.

In closing, thank you to everyone for your support, whether through a financial donation or through a donation of time as a troop leader, camp volunteer or committee member. It is this support that helps our girls’ dreams come true. And, with your help and support, girls will develop leadership skills that will last a lifetime!

Sincerely,

Jackie Ford Chief Executive Officer Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana

1 2019 ANNUAL REPORT LETTER

Dear Friends,

In our 2018 annual report back to the community published last March, we reported that in 2018 we completed our Strategic Alignment plan with the help from the community, girls, volunteers, parents, and board members. Through this process we identified our strategic priorities. On the next two pages, it is my pleasure to provide you an update on our work and progress achieved in these areas during 2019. You will see many accomplishments listed for our council, Sharon Handy as 2019 was very successful in many ways, from camp improvements, increased cookie sales and participation, to fundraising goals exceeded and many successful programs throughout our 64 county footprint. That said, we still have work to do to reach as many girls as possible so they can experience the benefits Girl Scouting offers. Nevertheless, we have much to celebrate thanks to our volunteers, staff and everyone who provides their time, talent and treasure to make our work possible.

At the end of the day, we all volunteer, work extra hours, and go the extra mile in order to make our council the best it can be for our 10,000 girl members. They are the reason we come together in the spirit of Girl Scouts. We are fortunate to see first-hand how when we invest in girls, we change the world. Please know that your support and dedication to our mission does not go unnoticed. We simply cannot do our work without you.

In closing, I would like to thank our retiring Chief Executive Officer, Jackie Ford, for her work during the past five years on behalf of our council. Jackie’s knowledge of Girl Scouts has brought a sense of stability and direction to our work and we appreciate all that she has done to improve the Kentuckiana Council.

Again, thank you for your investment in our girls. Please know that as board chair, I welcome your feedback and always have an open door for you to reach out to me with your comments and suggestions. You can reach me at [email protected] or [email protected].

Sincerely, Sharon Handy Sharon Handy Chair, Board of Directors Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana

5 HIGHEST AWARDS

Gold Awards Olivia Botner Troop 8 - Metro Louisville Project Title: Sketchings and Actions Preventing Allergic Reactions • Troop Leader: Susan Botner Project Advisor: Dr. John Riehm, Family Allergy & Asthma • Root Cause: Lack of food allergy education Summary: My project brought awareness to food allergies. I saw a lack of education in my community when it comes to this topic. I made an activity-coloring book that covers the physical, mental, and social challenges people with food allergies face every day. It also covers what food allergies are, their dangers, and how to be a friend to someone with a food allergy. I also hosted talks at schools, libraries, business places, and day-care centers to further educate people. I distributed the book, as well as a pamphlet I designed for adults. Both the book and pamphlet contain links where additional information can be obtained. Kavya Koneru Juliette - Metro Louisville Project Title: A Consumer Friendly Guide to All Louisville Farmers’ Markets • Project Advisor: Chaitanya Vukkum, Rainbow Learning Center • Root Cause: Local food movement sustainability Summary: Food deserts are extremely prevalent in Louisville as well as the . One of the main ways to combat these deserts is by introducing fresh foods through farmers markets, however, in many cities, people have a hard time getting information about farmers markets around them. In order to help more people become informed about farmers markets in Louisville, as well as other cities around the United States, I created a user friendly e-book and website guide to all markets in the area. The guides have a comprehensive description of how to get involved in the local food movement in their community. Michaela Newberry Troop 665 - Heartland Project Title: GirlPossible • Troop Leader: Elisa Di Giovanni Project Advisor: Linsey Roberts, Hardin County Schools • Root Cause: Lack of Self Esteem Summary: My project addresses a huge problem in today’s society: low self-esteem in young girls. During this transitional time, low self-esteem is evidenced by drops in grades at school, when girls stop communicating with their parents, depression, and even a rise in bullying and other negative behavior. I want to be able to show these girls that they are courageous and they can be confident in their character. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow, so let’s teach these girls that they are capable of anything they put their minds to. Emily Brucker Troop 2447 - Metro Louisville Project Title: Paint for a Change • Troop Leader: Tracy Plummer Project Advisor: Laurel Lammers, Jefferson County Public Schools • Root Cause: Low self-esteem and bullying Summary: Every seven minutes, a child somewhere in the world is bullied, and 85% of the time there’s no type of intervention, according to The National Voices for Equality Education and Enlightenment. The lack of intervention, in the form of affirmations, when it comes to bullying is extremely harmful, causing low self- esteem and depression within children. This is why, for my project, I painted positive affirmations on bathroom stalls for kids and created a website that spews out positive affirmations, tools, and outlets to children struggling with bullying and its effects. Emily Gillis Troop 365 - Metro Louisville Project Title: Wanna Build a Garden? • Troop Leader: Debbie Stephens Project Advisor: Debbie Stephens, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana • Root Cause: Food Literacy Summary: My goal is to encourage kids to go outside more and learn about how to garden. There is so much that can be discovered outside and I want the kids to know that there are things that they can learn without an electronic device. After school, I would head over to the garden and ask any kids if they were interested in joining me in the garden. At the beginning of my project, I knew that the kids would be interested in the doing part, but soon they started to grow interest in what I was actually saying. They would ask questions and I would answer them to the best of my ability. I knew that my goal was met with some of the kids 6 when they started to get excited to head over to the garden. Cheryl McDaniel Troop 4639 Union County, Kentucky Tell us about yourself: I’ve been a Girl Scout Leader for five years and Service Unit Manager for a year and a half. I am also a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteer for Union and Henderson County. I have worked on several committees through the Girl Scout organization such as, Marketing Warriors, Strategic Alignment, and Annual Meeting.

Why do you volunteer for Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana? To make a difference in a girl’s life. Knowing that I played a small piece in assisting a girl accomplish her goals makes me continue to volunteer. Also, to stand up for the girls when no one else will.

What are you most proud of? First, I am most proud of that my daughter has stayed in Girl Scouts while in high school. Second, I am proud of the girls that come in shy and clinging to mom or dad and, when you see them again, they have accomplished the courage and confidence that Girl Scouts stand for. Third, that I have met my overall goal with the help of my team for the second year in a row. Finally, seeing the Girl Scout program grow in Union County. Joanie Curtis Powell Troop 1630 Grayson County, Kentucky Tell us about yourself: I have been volunteering with Girl Scouts for seven years. I am a troop leader, service unit treasurer, area vice chair and I have been a delegate at the annual meeting three years now. I have been an insurance agent for 20 years and my husband and I own two agencies, one in Grayson County and the other in Edmonson County. I am an ambassador for the Grayson County Chamber of Commerce. I also love community theatre. I have been with the Pine Knob Outdoor Theatre for the past 30 years and have also performed with the Ohio County Courthouse Players.

Why do you volunteer for Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana? I was a Brownie when I was younger. The experiences I had stuck with me, and I knew when I had my daughter, I wanted the same for her. We went to sign her up and there were no troops with openings. They ask me to be a leader. I was so busy working full time and taking care of my family, I did not think I could do it, or even wanted to do it. However, after encouragement from Mona Fulkerson, I called up one of my closest friends Rachel and ask if she would be interested in helping me with a troop. She was a Girl Scout all through school. Rachel agreed and here we are, seven years later, still great friends and we have the best troop of girls. They are funny, smart and kind.

What are you most proud of? The rewards of being a leader are far greater than I could have imagined. Watching my daughter, Sydney, grow and become strong, independent, confident and kind is what I am most proud of. She is an absolute joy to have. Knowing we have this wonderful tribe of women and girls who lift each other up and encourage and love, it is a gift. I am so thankful I said yes to be a leader and I am looking forward to a lifetime of adventures with my daughter and our tribe.

8 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHTS

Melissa Mausolf Troop 1069 Oldham County, Kentucky Tell us about yourself: I have volunteered with Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana for about five years officially. I am a troop leader, trainer, area delegate, pod leader, and I also participate in council-wide efforts like think tanks and task groups. In addition to my work with GSK, I volunteer at Centerfield Elementary whenever possible. My volunteer opportunities are very much focused around my kids, and since my oldest (Brownie) already wants to earn her Gold Award, I believe I’m in it for the long haul - I am already a lifetime member! When I am not volunteering, I own my own tutoring business. I teach everything from 3rd grade math through Advanced Calculus for homeschoolers, public/private school students, and even adults!

Why do you volunteer for Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana? I started volunteering to offer my girls the opportunity to have their own troop. I knew the benefits of Girl Scouts from when I was a child, and I wanted to give them the chance for the same great experiences. While the program materials have changed drastically, the underlying promise and law still stand strong. My girls find sisterhood through camping, leading, and doing service projects. After attending a couple training weekends, I found the opportunity to apply my teaching experience in the training department. I learned skills, tips, and tricks from great trainers and eventually progressed into independent training. Along the way, I have found an adult sisterhood of amazing women (and men who support women in leadership). I love helping people grow and learn and feel confident, and I hope people see that in every role I take on.

What are you most proud of? I am most proud of the growth I see in my girls and the adults who support them. I am proud of my own accomplishments as well: becoming a waterfront lifeguard, leading various groups of strong women, and developing trainings in various topics; but seeing the shy girls learn to advocate for their ideas, helping adults find the joy in leadership, and generally forming new and lifelong friendships are my proudest moments. Vicki Dahill Troop 472 Clark County, Indiana Tell us about yourself: My other hobby, besides Girl Scouts, is medieval reenacting. I am part of a non-profit organization called the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA). We are a living history group, meaning our goal is to create, learn, educate and experience life as someone from a pre-17th century culture. I have been part of this group for 15 years. I met my husband while attending an SCA event.

Why do you volunteer for Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana? Girl Scouts has been part of my life since I was eight years old. I joined Girl Scouts when I was in the second grade. I enjoyed my time with Girl Scouts so much I continued through high school graduation. As an older girl, I was able to travel to Mississippi to learn art and history through what was then called a WiderOp (Wider Opportunity). It was one of the best and most life changing experiences I have had. My troop, as a graduation present, paid for my lifetime membership. A gift that I knew I would use and always appreciate. I helped with a few Girl Scout activities while in college, however, I have mostly sat out until now. My daughter is in kindergarten and she wanted to be a Girl Scout like mommy. I am the co-leader for her troop. Now I get to help girls have and enjoy the same experiences I had as a Girl Scout.

What are you most proud of? I have two children, Kahlan (who is in Kindergarten and a Girl Scout) and Sebastian (who is two). I am married to my wonderful husband Kevin. We have been married for 12 years.

13 MAN ENOUGH TO BE A GIRL SCOUT

In 2019, the Man Enough to be a Girl Scout Award was transformed into a Man Enough competition. The goal of the competition was to create a fun way to raise funds for GSK and showcase the support of so many men in our communities. This group of Man Enough candidates raised over $24,000!

The Man Enough award is presented to a community leader who not only believes in the power of every girl to change the world, but publicly champions opportunities to make that idea a reality. The Man Enough nominees were judged on their community service, amount of money raised and their creativity with social media and videos. We also had a competition within the competition as the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and Louisville Fire Department (LFD) created their own challenge to see who could raise the most money for the Girl Scouts. Two awards were presented - the Man Enough Award and the winner of the LMPD and LFD competition. There were nine candidates for the Man Enough to be a Girl Scout Award: Captain Jeremy Todd Bass, Lt. Colonel Joshua Judah, Matthew Kidd, Bob Meadows, John Richie, Reverend Daniel Corrie Shull, Zach Spicer, Joe Steier, and Mark Vogt.

A fundraising road block was organized during the Man Enough competition by LMPD and LFD in Louisville on Main Street in front of the KFC YUM! Center. Last year, Girl Scouts USA launched the Uniform to Uniform campaign. Through the Uniform to Uniform campaign, we invited local police officers and firefighters throughout our 64 county footprint to visit Girl Scouts at their cookie booths so that girls can learn about the work these amazing women and men do every day in our communities and thank them for their service. We had a great response to the campaign with photos submitted from all areas of the Kentuckiana Council.
