It is my goal to offer a new approach to the dynamics of political and cultural nationalism through the Andalusian case, and to contribute to the academic debate on nationalism, both in the Spanish case and in a global context. My research demonstrates how the Andalusian case, which does not completely fit into any theoretical model of nationalism, serves to put into question the problematic national identity of Spain after Franco’s dictatorship and into the present, as well as the cultural mechanisms and devices used to preserve, manipulate, or question the construction of “Spanishness” in the twenty-first century. The dissertation is divided into four chapters that deal with Spanish national and cultural identities in the twenty-first century as portrayed in cultural productions published in the past twenty years.

Acknowledgements I would like to thank all of you who have made this career switch to French teaching possible, in particular my professors at UT - Dr. Blyth, Dr. Horwitz, Dr. Sardegna, Dr. Pulido, Dr. Schallert, and Dr. Tissières - and all my friends in Foreign Language Education. I also wish to thank my husband Roland and my two sons Théo and Marius for their help and support during the past two years. v Abstract Using Multimedia to Teach French Language and Culture Florence Marie Lemoine, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2012 Supervisor: Carl Blyth In order for the study of French to survive in American higher education, it will be necessary to adopt a pedagogy that motivates learners as well as teaches them both language and culture. I argue that the judicious use of visual materials (film, video and graphic novels) is ideal for this undertaking. I further assert—based upon numerous sources from fields such as Second Language Acquisition, cognitive psychology, anthropology and sociolinguistics--that language and culture are inseparable, and that visual materials provide the necessary context to facilitate the teaching of both.

A Towering Task: The Story of the Peace Corps A film by Alana DeJoseph 107 minutes, color, 2019, Documentary FIRST RUN FEATURES 630 Ninth Ave. #1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600 / Fax (212) 989-7649 Website: www.firstrunfeatures.com Email: [email protected] Synopsis Narrated by Annette Benning, A Towering Task tells the remarkable story of the Peace Corps and takes viewers on a journey of how to experience the world. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy gave young Americans the opportunity to become "global citizens" by creating the Peace Corps as an independent volunteer program in countries around the world. Since then, more than 200,000 Americans have traveled to more than 140 countries to carry out the organization’s mission of international cooperation. Today, Americans—young and old alike—still want to serve their country; current volunteers work at the forefront of some of the most pressing issues facing the global community. Among the notable people who have either served as volunteers or worked as staff for the Peace Corps are: journalists Bill Moyers, Marco Werman, Maureen Orth, Peter Hessler and George Packer and Chris Matthews, Senators Jay Rockefeller and Chris Dodd, Congresswoman Donna Shalala and Congressmen Joe Kennedy and Christopher Shays, State Senator Jason Carter and his grandmother Lillian Carter, Ambassadors Vicki Huddleston and J. Christopher Stevens, Net- flix founder Reed Hastings, novelist Paul Theroux, home improvement specialist Bob Vila, Hol- lywood director Taylor Hackford, and many more. Directed by Alana DeJoseph, the documentary features indelible interviews of current and Re- turned Peace Corps Volunteers, current and former staff, scholars and journalists, community members and leaders around the world (including Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf).
