In 1992, Johnson was a college student attend- ing Clark Atlanta University. On a trip to New York with her cousin, she met an older man at the Apollo Theater and the two began dating. The man was a drug dealer and Johnson said she was introduced into that life of flash and cash. “I got a BMW when I was 21 for a birthday gift. I went to Hawaii at 20,” she recalled. “He was in that life. He lived that lifestyle. It was travel and money and all of that.” She met other women who also were dating drug dealers and when her friend asked if she would be interested in taking a trip to the Bahamas and tak- ing the woman’s boyfriend’s cash to be deposited in a bank there, Johnson did it. She took the trip to the Bahamas twice, and that’s all it took. “They (federal agents) were watching and wire- tapping,” Johnson recalled. She was arrested and indicted on money laun- dering charges and sentenced to 51 months in fed- eral prison. While serving her time in a Lexington, Kentucky, prison, Johnson was taught by another inmate to do manicures and she loved it. “I started going to the rooms with her and that’s how I started.
