V Prahe dňa 15.08.2020 Bc. Dominika Šalamonová Abstrakt Práca sa zaoberá premenami ženského zasväteného života vo vrcholnom stredoveku s ohľadom na kľúčové aspekty dobovej religiozity. Zasvätené ženy sú skúmané v ich spojitosti a interakcii s mužským svetom autorít a duchovných sprievodcov. Diachrónnym prístupom sú skúmané so zameraním na ideály a spiritualitu troch odlišných druhov skupín zasvätených žien; a to tradičné mníšske skupiny žijúce podľa Benediktovej reguly, menovite benediktínky a cisterciánky, ďalej mendikantské skupiny, ktoré zahŕňajú klarisky, dominikánky a terciárky oboch rádov, a napokon skupiny nonkonformných zasvätených žien, ku ktorým patria beguínky, anachorétky a reklúzy. Práca predstavuje sondu do proklamovaných ideálov týchto skupín v pohľade mužských autorít, a poukazuje na tendencie v spiritualite konkrétnych zasvätených žien. Základnou metódou je analýza viacerých typov prameňov, pričom kategóriou analýzy sú tri kľúčové aspekty náboženského života spoločnosti vrcholného stredoveku a to vzťah k askéze, vzťah ku Kristovi a eucharistii, a mariánska úcta. Úvodná kapitola predstavuje predpoklady konštruovania roly a pozície ženského pohlavia v stredovekej spoločnosti a následne rozvíja vznik a vývoj ženského zasväteného života v širšom kontexte. Ostatné kapitoly venujúce sa jednotlivým skupinám obsahujú ich charakteristiku so zameraním na vzťah k ženám, ďalej analýzu základných rádových dokumentov, na ktorých je ilustrovaný očakávaný ideál a v závere analýzu životopisov a ego dokumentov jednotlivých žien, ktoré odrážajú isté prvky spirituality. Následne sú tieto skupiny vzájomne komparované s ohľadom na skúmané kategórie analýzy. Kľúčové slová žena, vrcholný stredovek, mníšsky ideál, spiritualita, benediktínky, cisterciánky, klarisky, dominikánky, terciárky, beguínky, anachorétky, reklúzy Abstract This thesis examines the intricacies of women's vowed life in the High Middle Ages with regard to key aspects of contemporary religiosity. Vowed women are studied in their connection and interaction with the male world of authorities and spiritual guides. The diachronic approach is employed with a focus on the ideals and spirituality of three different types of vowed women's groups; traditional monastic groups living according to the Benedictine rule, namely Benedictines and Cistercians, Mendicant groups, which include Poor Clares, Dominicans and tertiaries of both orders, and finally groups of non-conformist vowed women, including beguines, anchoresses and recluses. This thesis serves as a probe into the proclaimed ideals of these groups in the view of male authorities, and points out the tendencies in the spirituality of specific vowed women. The principal method is the analysis of several types of sources with the categories of analysis being three key aspects of the religious life of the society of the High Middle Ages, namely the relationship to asceticism, the relationship to Christ and the Eucharist, and the Marian devotion. The introductory chapter presents the preconditions for constructing the role and position of the female gender in medieval society and subsequently discusses the origin and development of women's vowed life in a broader context. Other chapters devoted to individual religious groups contain their characteristics with a focus on the relationship with women, analysis of essential documents such as rules, which illustrate the expected ideal, and finally the analysis of biographies and ego documents of individual women, which reflect certain elements of spirituality. Subsequently, these groups are compared with respect to the examined categories of analysis. Úvod V súvislosti so stredovekom existuje medzi širšou spoločnosťou viacero stereotypov, obzvlášť v otázke postavenia a možností žien. Tieto stereotypy hovoria o mizogýnii, podradenosti žien a ich odsunutiu do úzadia, na druhoradú pozíciu. Aj najpoužívanejšie delenie stredovekej spoločnosti o trojakom ľude modliacich sa, bojujúcich a pracujúcich, ktoré je súčasťou základného stredoškolského učiva o stredoveku, nepočíta so ženami; tradiční zástupcovia týchto kategórii sú mních, rytier a poddaný.

The focus of the study is the pursuit of holiness as well as the perception of holiness. Both, pursuit and perception, serve as the point of departure for a discussion of the mentalities and the social realities which the women’s sainthood reflects.

STRATEGIES OF AUTHORSHIP AND READERSHIP AMONG MYSTIC WOMEN IN THE LATER MIDDLE AGES Madeleine Jeay and Kathleen Garay He read to her many a good book of high contemplation, and other books, such as the Bible with doctors’ commentaries on it, St Bride’s book, Hilton’s book, Bonaventura’s Stimulus Amoris, Incendium Amoris and other similar [. .] Afterwards he read of a woman called Mary of Oignies, and of her manner of life, of the wonderful sweetness that she had in hearing the word of God. [. .]1 Referring to herself in her autobiography in the third person, the fi f- teenth-century mystic Margery Kempe (ca.1373–ca.1478) explains how she obtained inspiration and reassurance in her own spiritual journey through the examples of other women who had undergone similar mystical crises and had recorded their experiences. Margery was an almost illiterate married woman, the mother of fourteen children, who discovered a vocation for spirituality and acquired a signifi cant knowledge of theology thanks to the sermons she attended and her sometimes confrontational conversations with the clerics and prelates she consulted for spiritual guidance.2 Among the books which were read to her by a priest over a period of seven or eight years, two in the quotation above refer to works by or about mystic women. Foreword In our pluralistic age we recognize many traditions have special gifts to make to a rich, well-balanced spirituality for our time. My own life has shown me the spiritual tradition stemming from St. Dominic, like that from his contemporary St. Francis, provides ever fresh insights. No tradition, however, can be understood merely by looking at its origins. We must see it unfold historically in those who have been formed by that tradition in many times and situations and have furthered its development. To know its essential strength, we need to see it tested, undergoing deformations yet recovering and growing. Therefore, I have tried to survey its eight centuries to give some sense of its chronology and its individual personalities, and of the inclusive Dominican Family. I have aimed only to provide a sketch to encourage readers to use the bibliography to explore further, but with regret I have omitted all documentation except to indicate the source of quotations. Tudesko Religious women in thirteenth and fourteenth-century Western Europe developed forms of pious practice that were unique in their extreme devotions to the blood \and body of Christ and unique in their use of their own physical bodies to practice these devotions. Thirteenth-century sources including works authored by Mechthild of Magdeburg, Gertrude the Great, and Angela of Foligno, as well as the late medieval biographies written by Thomas de Cantimpr& and Jacques de Vitry demonstrate a form of female piety that included physical starvation, cutting, flagellation, and the prayerful welcoming of debilitating illnesses. Considered incapable of the intellectual devotions of male mystics, women sought to grow closer to God through the physical imitation of Christ's human suffering in the Crucifixion.

I consider a number of texts dating from approximately 1080-1200 written specifically for women that I refer to as religious advice literature, or prescriptive literature. By advice literature, I refer to a variety of genres including letters, sermons, saints’ lives, and visionary texts. Religious men such as Peter Abelard, Osbert of Clare, Goscelin of St. Bertin, and Conrad of Hirsau designed these prescriptive texts to address what they perceived as the issues that directly affected the lives of women. These issues included the preservation of sexual purity and the practice of monastic meditation. I argue that they described traditional metaphors for monastic activity in gendered language. This technique served to make their texts relevant to the lives of religious women. I also consider the potential reactions of female readers. To this end, I consider the writings of female authors such as the Heloise, abbess of the Paraclete in France and Hildegard von Bingen, German abbess and renowned visionary. I also examine the writings of men that were influenced by religious women such as the Life of Christina of Markyate and the Second Life of Robert of Arbrissal.

    The Medieval Blood Sanction and the Divine Beneficence of Pain: 1100 - 1450 Trisha Olson* Here the worldling now all bound in fetters lies starts to fear his God, his tears flow from his eyes Justice comes along, with gallows, wheel and sword: God tells the pious man to enter Heaven’s door.1 Across medieval western Europe those who committed serious wrongs, such as homicide, arson, treason, and rape were subject to a wide range of capital punishments that were seemingly brutal, frequently bloody, and at times spectacular. Grisly images of an executioner dismembering a condemned’s limbs from his torso, smashing his chest cavity, gouging his eyes, or piercing his body with hot pokers are the common subject of scaffold art in the high middle ages.2 Such images attest to the critical role of pain in medieval capital punishment. Whereas in our day all attempts are made to render penal death painless, in the high and late middle ages the tie between pain and death is not only tolerated but purposefully exacerbated. Other forms of punishment did exist. In the midst of urbanisation and rejuvenating apostolic zeal, the vitae emerged from a milieu in which groups of women who were unable or unwilling to pursue a traditional religious vocation chose to live a vita mixta, a combination of the contemplative and active life, while remaining in the world.

Riley It is a timeless truism that women are expected to perform simultaneously on many levels; ,in the Middle Ages, performance was often requisite not only for appropriating authority, but often for having any kind of a voice at all. The roles in which women could function during this period were finite and few, and also socially -- outwardly -- defined: wife/mother, widow/ virgin, or nun/recluse. A certain group of women who lived in the mid-twelfth to early thirteenth centuries exploded these roles, but they did so in ways which ostensibly fit into already tried and socially acceptable prescriptions -- namely, female mystics. These women, each in her own way, performed the spectacle of divine intervention, preaching the words that God imparted to them, and especially using their bodies to demonstrate their status as "chosen," validating the authenticity of their experiences, and the permissibility of their alternate lifestyles.

However, second parties, primarily male hagiographers, recorded most of the written works about these women’s lives and spiritual experiences. Thus the question of authorship and influence arises in discerning what arose from the women themselves as opposed to their writers. In this paper I analyze the women’s vitae of one writer, Thomas of Cantimpré, from the 13 th century to find what a comparison of the texts reveal about the subjects and the author’s motivations in telling their lives.
