  • Regionalising the State Infrastructure Strategy
June 2021 Report to Infrastructure WA Regionalising the State Infrastructure Strategy Regional Strengths and Opportunities Assessment Interpreting this report . The regional strengths and opportunities assessment presented in this report has been based on a set of 71 indicators across seven economic and social development categories that help to assess the capacity of a region to host any one of the six opportunities that have been defined by Infrastructure WA in the State Infrastructure Strategy Vision. The suite of indicators provided the basis to profile each of Western Australia’s nine development regions and the Perth Metropolitan area in a consistent and objective way, but was also a critical part of the Multicriteria Assessment (MCA) framework to assess the relative strengths of each region and the capacity of a region to host any one of the six opportunities. The MCA framework applied individual weights to each indicator within each category, reflecting the importance of each indicator in assessing a region’s strength. When each indicator weighting is assessed against the category weightings that are applied to each opportunity, there are some 426 individual weighting that form the MCA framework. The key limitation of this analysis was the data that was available at a regional level, including in relation to the measurement of agricultural land capacity, water availability, industrial and commercial zoned land, numbers of Aboriginal businesses, telecommunications, renewable energy generation capacity, major projects under consideration, and tourism visitation. These data gaps limit the ability to assess specific industry opportunities at a regional level. Notwithstanding the data limitations, ACIL Allen’s assessment provides an objective, transparent and robust assessment of a region’s strengths as they apply to the opportunities identified in the State Infrastructure Strategy Vision.

  • Swan River Belonging: Social and Emotional Interactions with an Urban River in the South West of Western Australia
Swan River Belonging: social and emotional interactions with an urban river in the South West of Western Australia Marie Seeman Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Anthropology, University of Queensland This thesis is presented for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Western Australia. School of Social and Cultural Studies Discipline of Anthropology and Sociology 2008 Marie Seeman 1 ABSTRACT In this thesis I explore concepts of belonging in relation to the Swan River of Perth, Western Australia. The primary focus of my research was on the various ways in which people expressed their social and emotional connections to a waterway often referred to as the 'soul of the city'. The people consulted derived from two main groups: a local inner city catchment group and a collection of artists. Drawing on literature such as Kay Milton's theories of emotion, culture and the environment to explain my ethnographic data, I show how and why people's interactions with the Swan River are motivated and enacted. This thesis demonstrates that human relationships with rivers such as the Swan are complicated by themes that include nostalgia, memory, aesthetics, space, proximity, ecological concerns and development issues. By drawing on a range of methods (participant observation, interviewing) and travel modes (walking, cycling), I found that current day practices were affected by historical decision making for both indigenous and non-indigenous groups. My research conveys the value of doing socio-cultural research on rivers in urban and in other contexts,

Precinct 8 Burswood Island to Maylands Peninsula (Causeway Bridge to Bath Street Reserve) 1 Summary Burswood Island to Maylands Peninsula (Causeway Bridge to Bath Street Reserve) The Swan River takes the form of broad, graceful regular meanders upstream of Heirisson Island to Maylands Peninsula. The wide channel seasonally inundates the remaining flat alluvial sediments, such as Maylands Peninsula. The landform is particularly attractive as it highlights the river meander bends with the flat peninsulas nesting into steeply sloping escarpments of the opposite banks. The escarpment line curves in a parabolic form with the low Burswood Island Resort is a large modern development which points being the peninsulas at either end and the central curve stands out rather than complements the river environment, tapering to a uniform, higher ridge. however the landscaped gardens and highly maintained appearance,, is more attractive than the adjacent railway reserve There is little natural riparian vegetation along the foreshore in land. At present, the northern point of the peninsula is currently this section due to extensive landfill and intensive land use in the being developed as a major transport node to bypass the main area. One of the most attractive vegetation complexes is the city area and consequently is an unattractive construction site. samphire flats and fringing reed communities at the Maylands There is a mixture of high density flats and single residential Peninsula. Remnant flooded gum and paperbark communities blocks along the Rivervale foreshore and the land west of are present along the southern foreshore between Belmont Park Abernethy Road is currently being redeveloped for residential Racecourse and Abernethy Road, however these complexes land use.

  • SUD GARDAN GY-80 HORIZONS in AUSTRALIA by Geoff Goodall
Last updated 14 July 2019 SUD GARDAN GY-80 HORIZONS IN AUSTRALIA By Geoff Goodall The story of three new French Sud Horizons imported in 1967-68. Hopes for a new sales market in Australia were not realised and it was to be over 20 years before several other used Horizons arrived. Our first Horizon VH-KJC still going strong in 2013, based at Caboolture Qld. Photo by Ian McDonell The Gardan GY-80 Horizon was first flown in France in 1960, as a development of the successful Gardan GY-20 Minicab wooden construction homebuilt series designed by Yves Gardan. The new Horizon was an all-metal 4 seater touring aircraft, featuring an all-moving tailplane and tricycle retractable undercarriage. Four Fowler type flaps are connected mechanically to the landing gear mechanism. A crank handle in the cockpit raises and lowers the flaps and tricycle landing gear together. The French heavy aircraft manufacturer Sud Aviation negotiated with Yves Gardan for a licence for commercial production of the Horizon, then licenced SOCATA (Societe de Construction d'Avions de Tourism et d'Affaires - a reorganisation of the old Morane-Saulnier) to carry out the manufacture. Commercial production commenced in 1962 at Nantes and Rochefort, marketed as the Sud Gardan GY-80 Horizon, later SOCATA GY-80 Horizon. They were powered by 160hp or 180hp variants of the well-proven Lycoming O-360 series, as used by Cessna 172, Piper Cherokee and other popular aircraft types. A total of 267 Horizons were built before production switched in 1969 to a more sophisticated development, the SOCATA Diplomate.
