Relative to recognizing Senora Doris Katherine Carriaga Charfauros for her dedication in promoting the Chamorro language and culture through her active membership in the Chamorro Nation; and to further commending Senora Charfauros for playing an instrumental role in the renaming of "Latte Stone Park" to the "Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park." 1 BE IT RESOLVED BY I MINA'TRENTAI TRES NA LIHESLATURAN 2 GUAHAN: 3 WHEREAS, Doris Katherine Charfauros was born on March 20, 1952; and is 4 married to Johnny Cruz Charfauros. Her parents are Estella Aguon Quintanilla and Juan 5 Perez Carriaga; and she is the mother of six (6) children: Annabelle Charfauros 6 Vanlancker, Delilah Darlene Charfauros, Evangeline Estella Charfauros Ada, Zaraniell 1 1 Princess Charfauros, Johnny Angel Carriaga Charfauros and Keikilani Faith 2 Charfauros; and 3 WHEREAS, Mrs. Charfauros became a member of the Chamorro Nation in 4 1991, and she worked closely with Chamorro rights activist, former Senator Angel 5 LG. Santos, where she joined the movement that held mass protests at Adelup for the 6 implementation of the Chamorro Land Trust Act which provides land for landless 7 Chamorros to lease property and build homes for their family; and 8 WHEREAS, Mrs. Charfauros stood alongside her mentor, former Senator 9 Angel L.G. Santos, as the Chamorro Nation also protested for the return of ancestral 10 lands that were confiscated by the United States government. Furthermore, the group 11 also advocated for the United States to compensate the man'amko who were victims 12 of the war during World War II; and 13 WHEREAS, in 1997, Mrs. Charfauros, along with Angel L.G. Santos and the 14 Chamorro Nation, walked the streets of Guam to feed the homeless and to visit with 15 the sickly and elderly in their homes, providing help and friendship; and 16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Charfauros fondly remembers former Senator Angel LG. 17 Santos for his ideals and principles, and she continues to reflect on his teachings 18 which she has passed on to her children and younger family members, that of carrying 19 the torch of the Chamorro people for generations by protecting the culture, language 20 and heritage; to never give up on something worth fighting for; and recognizing that 21 although Guam must change with the times, the lifeblood of Guam is in her people, the Chamorros, who must never forget their heritage and who have a responsibility to 23 pass down the traditions to their children for the benefit of future generations; and 24 WHEREAS, Mrs. Charfauros was instrumental in the renaming of the "Latte 25 Stone Park" to the "Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park," 26 having thought up the idea because she strongly believed that Senator Angel L.G. 2 1 Santos should be recognized as a leader who stood up for the Chamorro people. Spurred 2 by her love and memory of the late Honorable Angel Santos, former Senator, Mrs. 3 Charfauros approached Senator Tina Muna Barnes, who in tum, introduced the bill, and 4 a public hearing was held. Mrs. Charfauros and others provided testimony at the 5 hearing. The bill became Public Law 27-44 on November 14, 2003. Since then, 6 thousands of visitors have enjoyed the "Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte 7 Stone Memorial Park," which memorializes his leadership and devotion to the people 8 of Guam; now therefore, be it 9 RESOLVED, that I Jv!ina'Trentai Tres Na Liheslaturan Guahan does hereby, on 10 behalf of the people of Guam, recognize Senora Doris Katherine Carriaga Charfauros 11 for her dedication in promoting the Chamorro language and culture through her active 12 membership in the Chamorro Nation; and does further commend Senora Charfauros for 13 playing an instrumental role in the renaming of "Latte Stone Park" to the "Senator 14 Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park"; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, that the Speaker certify, and the Legislative Secretary attest to, the 16 adoption hereof, and that copies of the same be thereafter transmitted to Senora Doris 17 Katherine Carriaga Charfauros and her children Annabelle Charfauros Vanlancker, 18 Delilah Darlene Charfauros, Evangeline Estella Charfauros Ada, Zaraniell Princess 19 Charfauros, Johnny Angel Carriaga Charfauroand Keikilani Faith Charfauros; and to 20 the Honorable Edward J.B.
