  • DAP Moves to Ease Fears Over Islamic State Malaysiakini.Com January 21, 2011
DAP moves to ease fears over Islamic state Malaysiakini.com January 21, 2011 Following attempts by Umno and MCA to intimidate Chinese voters in Tenang with PAS' Islamic state agenda, DAP is moving to allay such fears, stressing that PAS is now a party that fights for all ethnic groups. "MCA is sleeping, thinking that it is still 1999 when people were afraid of an Islamic state. In fact, PAS is now talking about a welfare state and its battles for the benefit of all races," Johor DAP chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau said at a DAP dinner in Labis last night. "Umno is the one still talking racial politics. We don't call our home minister Hishammuddin (Hussein), we call him Kerismuddin because he always brandishes the keris." Besides Boo, other DAP leaders expressed their support for PAS at the RM50 a head fund-raising dinner attended by some 800 passionate Chinese supporters, where DAP also raised another RM4,555 in on-the-spot donations. DAP Rasah MP Anthony Loke rebutted MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek's statement earlier that Chinese who voted for PAS would be sending the Malay community the message that they were willing to accept the country as an Islamic state. "We will vote for PAS on Jan 30 for a fair and corruption-free government, not for an Islamic state. We vote to change the government, not merely for PAS, nor an Islamic state," Loke (right) said. The party youth chief then turned aggressive: "If we vote for Umno, it means that we accept Umno's continued oppression of us and allow the party to continue its extreme racial statements and behaviour." Islamic state is not Pakatan common policy His statement was echoed by DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, who pointed out that Penang, Selangor and Perak, which are ruled by Pakatan Rakyat, have not turned into Islamic states.

KEMANUSIAAN Vol. 25, No. 1, (2018), 19–41 The Implication of Conjunctive Element Shifts in the Translation of Argumentative Texts SIEW HUI SHENG SOH BEE KWEE *LOOI WAI LING Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Languages and Liguistics, University of Malaya, 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia *Corresponding author: [email protected] Published online: 20 April 2018 To cite this article: Siew, H.S., Soh, B.K. and Looi, W.L. 2018. The implication of conjunctive element shifts in the translation of argumentative texts. KEMANUSIAAN the Asian Journal of Humanities 25(1): 19–41, https://doi.org/10.21315/kajh2018.25.1.2 To link to this article: https://doi.org/10.21315/kajh2018.25.1.2 Abstract. This study attempts to identify the implication of conjunctive element shifts in the Chinese translation of argumentative column articles by an established columnist. More specifically, this study focuses on the implication of a cohesive shift, which includes explicitations, implicitations, shifts and wrong translations of conjunctive elements in the translated text. The texts in this study are argumentative in nature, and the use of conjunctive elements is pivotal in guiding the reader on the flow of the argument at hand. Through in- depth analysis and observation, it is found that changes in conjunctive elements can affect a translation in six possible ways: altering the intensity of the message, shifting the focus of the message, altering the tone and manner of the texts, causing repetitious and intrusive translations, changing the interpretation of the text, and altering the conversational-like element in the source text.

  • DAP Exco Man Freed After Night in Lock-Up Malaysiakini.Com Sept 1, 2014
DAP exco man freed after night in lock-up MalaysiaKini.com Sept 1, 2014 Penang exco member Phee Boon Poh was released by police this evening after having spent a night in a police lock-up for his role as the head of state-funded Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS). A total of 134 more PPS members will be released by midnight, lawyer Gobind Singh Deo said this afternoon. Gobind said the documentation was being done to secure the release of the members. He was accompanied by 21 lawyers from DAP, PKR and the Bar Council’s Legal Aid Centre and they managed to get into a sessions court set up for the matter at the Northeast District police headquarters on Jalan Patani about 12.30pm today. "The police applied to remand them for four days, but since they needed to prepare the documentation, the detainees will be released, temporarily, on police bail today. "The sessions court judge heard the application by the detainees to seek their release," Gobind said. However, the lawyers were not informed about the actual reason for the remand. Sessions judge Mohamad Izwan presided over the matter, while police officer ASP Karuna applied for the remand. The lawyers came out about 3pm and were greeted by supporters who clapped happily upon hearing about the pending release of the detainees. Exact charge yet to be specified According to Gobind, the detainees are being investigated under Section 43 of the 1966 Societies Act, but the exact charge is yet to be specified. Earlier, 21 PPS members - seven women and 14 senior citizens over the age 60 - were released on police bail, after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng negotiated with the police for their release last night.
