Fresh CEC elections will take place as planned, says DAP’s Guan Eng Malaysian Insider Sept 11 , 2013 By EILEEN NG DAP is going ahead with fresh elections for its central executive committee (CEC) despite attempts to stop it by a disgruntled member. Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng (pic) called on delegates to turn up in full force to ensure it can proceed smoothly later this month. "We hope for a good turnout. There are concerns about attempts to sabotage the re-election. "I hope delegates can turn up for the polls to proceed smoothly and to save the party," he said at the party's headquarters today. Lim said they have yet to receive the injunction by a grassroots leader to stop the election. "Let our lawyers deal with it. We'll proceed with the re-election until we get instructions from the court," he said. The lawyers who will be handling this are DAP chairman Karpal Singh and Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo. Yesterday, Ladang Paroi branch deputy chairman A. David Dass claimed to have filed an injunction to stop the re-election on September 29, claiming that it was against the party's constitution. DAP is holding fresh elections for its CEC in order to avoid deregistration following a directive by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) on July 30. The re-election was ordered by RoS after several disgruntled members claimed that the election in December last year was not properly conducted after the party announced that a glitch had resulted in the wrong candidate being elected to the CEC. These disgruntled members also claimed they were not informed of the party polls. Party national organising secretary Anthony Loke had rebutted the allegations that it did not inform 753 delegates of the party polls and produced evidence of members' attendance record, signatures and postal receipts which showed notices were sent out. — September 11, 2013. "MCA is sleeping, thinking that it is still 1999 when people were afraid of an Islamic state. In fact, PAS is now talking about a welfare state and its battles for the benefit of all races," Johor DAP chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau said at a DAP dinner in Labis last night. "Umno is the one still talking racial politics. We don't call our home minister Hishammuddin (Hussein), we call him Kerismuddin because he always brandishes the keris." Besides Boo, other DAP leaders expressed their support for PAS at the RM50 a head fund-raising dinner attended by some 800 passionate Chinese supporters, where DAP also raised another RM4,555 in on-the-spot donations. Malaysia’s Changing Federal-State Relations Kelantan & the PH Government By Najwa Abdullah SYNOPSIS The Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) state government in Kelantan had had difficult relationships with Barisan Nasional (BN) governments in Kuala Lumpur for as long as BN was in power. Will this change under the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) government? COMMENTARY THROUGHOUT THE modern history of Malaysian politics, the state of Kelantan has been unique in many ways, particularly for its distinctive political choice and religious character. Since 1990 when PAS gained control there, Kelantan was continuously portrayed as the ‘disobedient’ state by the federal government during the UMNO-led Barisan Nasional (BN) period. As a result, Kelantan’s relationship with the centre had been fraught with disagreements, particularly over economic development and oil royalty. There had been numerous studies and reports on how the BN government had blocked the allocation of mandatory and discretionary grants and refused to pay the oil royalty to the state government. The BN tactics did not convince the Kelantanese to stop their support for PAS, as reflected by PAS’ victories in Kelantan in the general elections over the years (except in 2004 where Kelantan almost fell to BN).

Malaysia: the 2020 putsch for Malay Islam supremacy James Chin School of Social Sciences, University of Tasmania ABSTRACT Many people were surprised by the sudden fall of Mahathir Mohamad and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government on 21 February 2020, barely two years after winning the historic May 2018 general elections. This article argues that the fall was largely due to the following factors: the ideology of Ketuanan Melayu Islam (Malay Islam Supremacy); the Mahathir-Anwar dispute; Mahathir’s own role in trying to reduce the role of the non-Malays in the government; and the manufactured fear among the Malay polity that the Malays and Islam were under threat. It concludes that the majority of the Malay population, and the Malay establishment, are not ready to share political power with the non- Malays. Introduction Many people were shocked when the Barisan National (BN or National Front) govern- ment lost its majority in the May 2018 general elections. After all, BN had been in power since independence in 1957 and the Federation of Malaysia was generally regarded as a stable, one-party regime. What was even more remarkable was that the person responsible for Malaysia’s ﬁrst regime change, Mahathir Mohammad, was also Malaysia’s erstwhile longest serving prime minister. He had headed the BN from 1981 to 2003 and was widely regarded as Malaysia’s strongman. In 2017, he assumed leader- ship of the then-opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH or Alliance of Hope) coalition and led the coalition to victory on 9 May 2018. He is remarkable as well for the fact that he became, at the age of 93, the world’s oldest elected leader.1 The was great hope that Malaysia would join the global club of democracy but less than two years on, the PH government fell apart on 21 February 2020.

A total of 134 more PPS members will be released by midnight, lawyer Gobind Singh Deo said this afternoon. Gobind said the documentation was being done to secure the release of the members. He was accompanied by 21 lawyers from DAP, PKR and the Bar Council’s Legal Aid Centre and they managed to get into a sessions court set up for the matter at the Northeast District police headquarters on Jalan Patani about 12.30pm today. "The police applied to remand them for four days, but since they needed to prepare the documentation, the detainees will be released, temporarily, on police bail today. "The sessions court judge heard the application by the detainees to seek their release," Gobind said. However, the lawyers were not informed about the actual reason for the remand. Sessions judge Mohamad Izwan presided over the matter, while police officer ASP Karuna applied for the remand. The lawyers came out about 3pm and were greeted by supporters who clapped happily upon hearing about the pending release of the detainees. Exact charge yet to be specified According to Gobind, the detainees are being investigated under Section 43 of the 1966 Societies Act, but the exact charge is yet to be specified. Earlier, 21 PPS members - seven women and 14 senior citizens over the age 60 - were released on police bail, after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng negotiated with the police for their release last night.
