The Ottoman Empire Day 1. After arriving in Istanbul, transfer to hotel. Dinner and overnight in Istanbul Day 2. Today we drive to Edirne, the former Hadrianopolis. We visit the famous Selimiye Mosque. This is the masterpiece of architect Sinan. In the center of the city we feel after all these years the power of the Ottomans. Kervansarai, librarie, hamam and medrese are still standing. Dinner and overnight in Edirne Day 3. After breakfast we drive to Gelibolu. This city was the first European city of the Ottomans. We are on the peninsula-long battle the Gallipoly War in 1915, 250,000 young people have been killed. Turks, Australians and men from New Sealand are buried there . In the afternoon we cross over the Dardanelles to the Asian side of Turkey. Dinner and overnight in Çanakkale Day 4. Today we drive to Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. Ulu Camii (Big Mosque) and the silk bazaar are worth to see. Bursa is the place of kebap and we will not miss it! After lunch we visit the Green Mosque and the Green Tomb. Dinner and overnight in Bursa Day 5. Departure to the last capital of the Ottoman Empire Istanbul. Over the Bosphorus Bridge we come to the European part of this huge city. After a typical turkish lunch we enjoy a wonderful cruise on the Bosphorus. With this trip we sail along the most beautiful examples of Ottoman palaces and villas. After the boat we walk to the Egyptian Bazaar, where you get time to shop. Dinner and overnight in Istanbul Day 6. Today we visit the Sultanahmet Mosque, known as the "Blue Mosque". Indeed, there are 23,000 blue tiles used for the interior. After a litlle walk we will come by the Topkapi Palace. It is an adventure to be there and visit a lot of Ottoman rooms.The most famous room is of course the room of treasury. Overlooking at the Bosphorus we enjoy our meal. We start with the Dolmabahce Palace. The Bosphorus palace is the symbol of the power of the Ottomans. It was build in the 19th century.We drive to the Taksim Square. Walking on the Istiklal street we arrive at the old Galata Tower We will have a beautiful view over Istanbul. We have our lunch with at the Galata Tower and after the lunch we walk to the second oldest subway in Europe. By underground we descend to the Golden Horn. We take a look at the fishermen on the historical Galata Bridge and arrive at the famous jewellery where we learn about the Ottoman art jewellery. Dinner and overnight in Istanbul Day 8. We believe it is both valuable and necessary that these transformation projects, which involve individuals who take part in the academic process and who are concerned with studio education, should also be dealt with in the architectural education process. IMAGES OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE: THE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUMS PRESENTED BY SULTAN ABDULHAMID II MUHAMMAD ISA WALEY ONE of the treasures of the British Library's Turkish collections is the magnificent set of fifty-one ornately bound albums, containing in all over i,8oo photographs (albumen prints), which the Ottoman Sultan Abdlilhamid II presented to the British Museum in 1893 and were received in 1894. (An almost identical set was given to the United States Library of Congress in the same years.) The contents represent a carefully picked selection from the vast photographic collection amassed by the Sultan, whose complete archive of over 33,000 prints is preserved at the Istanbul University Library. The gift was designed to show the Sultan, sovereign of a still considerable territory with a great history, as a reforming and enlightened ruler. Abdlilhamid II was an extraordinary figure and can be seen from many different viewpoints. It is not always easy for the reader to believe that the comprehensive character assassination by Sir Edwin Pears,^ the slightly romantic, perhaps over-protective account by Joan Haslip,^ and the quasi-hagiography by the Turkish writer Necip Fazil Kisakurek^ all really concern the same man. In fact, there is abundant scope and material for further research on the Sultan and the events of his reign, which lasted from 1876 to 1909. His photographs will surely play a part in that process. The volumes of mounted photographs range in size from about 25 x 30 to 30 x 40 cm. They are beautifully bound in very dark green morocco adorned with the insignia of Sultan Abdtilhamid II inlaid in red, green and black edged with gold.
