Poland – Germany – History Issue: 18 /2020 26’02’21 The Polish-French Alliance of 1921 By Prof. dr hab. Stanisław Żerko Concluded in February 1921, Poland’s alliance treaty with France, which was intended to afford the former an additional level of protection against German aggression, was the centerpiece of Poland’s foreign policy during the Interwar Period. However, from Poland’s viewpoint, the alliance had all along been fraught with significant shortcomings. With the passage of time, it lost some of its significance as Paris increasingly disregarded Warsaw’s interests. This trend was epitomized by the Locarno conference of 1925, which marked the beginning of the Franco-German rapprochement. By 1933-1934, Poland began to revise its foreign policy with an eye to turning the alliance into a partnership. This effort turned out to be unsuccessful. It was not until the diplomatic crisis of 1939 that the treaty was strengthened and complemented with an Anglo-Polish alliance, which nevertheless failed to avert the German attack on Poland. Despite both France and Great Britain having declared war against the Reich on September 3, 1939, neither provided their Polish ally with due assistance. However, French support was the main factor for an outcome that was generally favorable to Poland, which was to redraw its border with Germany during the Paris peace conference in 1919. It seems that the terms imposed on the Reich in the Treaty of Versailles were all that Poland could ever have hoped to achieve given the balance of power at the time. One should bear in mind that France made a significant contribution to organizing and arming the Polish Army, especially when the Republic of Poland came under threat from Soviet Russia in the summer of 1920. -

Attempts for a French-German Rapprochement During the Second
10 Attempts at a Franco-German economic Rapprochement during the Second Half of the 1930s Frédéric Clavert Hitler’s seizure of power in 1933 was not welcomed in France, but Paris believed that it had the means to contain Nazi Germany. The Third Republic was counting on the diplomatic policy developed since 1919. It was based on an “alliance de revers” with Poland and the Little Entente (Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and Rumania). Two great conferences, the economic and financial conference in London and the disarmament conference in Geneva, collapsed in 1933, which was to Berlin’s advantage. It led France to build the Gold Bloc, which soon proved a failure, and encouraged Germany to withdraw from the League of Nations. Furthermore, the French position in Eastern Europe worsened when Poland signed an agreement with Germany in January of 1934. The “alliance de revers” was dying. Paris and Berlin nonetheless tried to come to an agreement on disarmament, but Louis Barthou, the French foreign minister, explained in April 1934 that France would decide alone what was in its national interests. The disarmament talks were over. On an economic level, France wanted Germany to refund the Dawes and Young loans. Hjalmar Schacht, president of the Reichsbank, halted all financial and commercial transfers in foreign currencies. As a result, France and Germany concluded a clearing agreement in July 1934. Paris accepted to buy more German goods, and Berlin would pay 206 its debts in francs instead of blocked marks. However, this treaty malfunctioned in the weeks following its signing.1 On a diplomatic level, Paris, London, and Rome then tried to establish a front against Germany. -

ENG 339 Tragedy T/Th 11:30am-12:50pm Merrill 403 Instructor: Professor Daniel Sack Office: Johnson Chapel, Room 30C Hours: Tuesday 1-3pm (and by appointment) Contact: [email protected] Course Description A survey of some of the many lives and deaths of tragedy as a theatrical form, this course considers representative plays in the genre from its origins in Ancient Greece through to the crisis of the form in the 20th and 21st century. This is not a seminar in Classics; it is an investigation of a genre as a mode of thought and artistic production. However, all tragedy to follow revolves around the initial statements in the Classical period, so we will ground our discussions here. Signal moments in other times and traditions inform subsequent readings, but our primary focus will be upon the way in which modern and contemporary artists in the English language have revised, rehearsed, and rejected the oldest genre of Western theatrical production. One could certainly speak of a broader tragic vision or sensibility extending into other forms of artistic production (novels and films, for eXample) or even into everyday life as in the newscaster’s daily lament about whatever catastrophe or downfall. In this course we are concerned with how tragedy is performed in the theatre and what its location there promises for its audiences. In addition to the plays we read, theory and philosophy on the nature of the tragic will help guide our conversation. Performance thinks differently than literature, differently than philosophy. Play scripts presuppose a staged performance and represent but one facet of a larger artistic whole, so too our readings of plays and theory will always refer to what is possible or expected upon the stage. -

Alors que le régime a été synonyme de honte nationale pendant plusieurs décennies, l’historiographie en a tracé un portrait peu flatteur qui a tardé à évoluer. Cette interprétation négative dure jusqu’aux années 1930-1940, à partir desquelles les historiens remettent en question les idées reçues sur le régime et le perçoivent positivement. En effectuant une critique externe et interne d’ouvrages publiés par des auteurs français sur le Second Empire depuis 1870, le présent mémoire vise à identifier les facteurs qui expliquent la lente transformation de la perception du régime et de l’Empereur. La critique externe démontre que les auteurs, le contexte historique et la discipline historique ont joué un rôle dans cette perception. L’analyse interne de la politique socio-économique, intérieure et extérieure du régime, ainsi que de la personnalité de l’Empereur, démontre que d’autres facteurs, comme l’utilisation de sources et la façon d’aborder le sujet, ont eu un impact sur l’évaluation de Napoléon III et du Second Empire. Jean Racine (1639-1699)
Jean Racine (1639-1699) Biographie ean Racine (22 décembre 1639 à 21 avril 1699) naquit à la Ferté Milon, dans l'Aisne. Issu d'un milieu bourgeois plutôt, il fut orphelin de mère à 2 ans et de père à 4 ans. Il fut alors J (1643) recueilli par ses grands-parents maternels. Les relations avec l'abbaye janséniste de Port-Royal imprégnèrent toute la vie de Racine. Il y subit l'influence profonde des «solitaires» et de leur doctrine exigeante. L'une de ses tantes y fut religieuse ; sa grand-mère s'y retint à la mort de son mari (1649). L'enfant fut alors admis aux Petites Écoles à titre gracieux. Deux séjours dans des collèges complétèrent sa formation : le collège de Beauvais (1653-1654) et le collège d'Harcourt, à Paris, où il fit sa philosophie (1658). À 20 ans, nantis d'une formation solide mais démuni de biens, Racine fut introduit dans le monde par son cousin Nicolas Vitart (1624-1683), intendant du duc de Luynes. Il noua ses premières relations littéraires (La Fontaine) et donna ses premiers essais poétiques. En 1660, son ode la Nymphe de la Seine à la Reine, composée à l'occasion du mariage de Louis XIV, retint l'attention de Charles Perrault. Mais, pour assurer sa subsistance, il entreprit de rechercher un bénéfice ecclésiastique et séjourna à Uzès (1661-1663) auprès de son oncle, le vicaire général Antoine Sconin. Jocasta has always been overshadowed by the tragic destiny of Oedipus since the onset of Sophocles’ works. Although these three plays commonly focus on describing the character of Jocasta, there are some remarkable differences among them in terms of theme, style, and stage directions. -

BLANDINE CHELINI-PONT* According to Robert Bellah, in his article, “Civil Religion in America,” civil religion is a combination of collective rituals that reveal a devotion to the unity of a nation and a national mythology made up of a diffusion of beliefs and representations that consti- tute the dominant mental attitudes of a society.1 Civil religion has its own unique history and its own mythical or providential origins. It allows the population of a country to identify itself as such. It gives a national group the feeling of belonging, attachment, and a common sense of pride.2 From this definition, Bellah considers civil religion a real religion, which he calls a “national faith.”3 The famous French intellectual Regis´ Debray believes that there is something more primitive and invincible beyond this faith, a state of very elaborate feelings of belonging that he calls le sacre´, “the sacred.”4 According to Debray, the sacred “allows a group of * Assistant Professor in Contemporary History, Universite´ Paul Cezanne´ of Aix-en- Provence, France.
