QQR 7 Information Pack
7th Quinquennial Review of Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) Information Pack (version 2.21) 14 May 2021 1 Version 2.2: Four reptiles and two seals removed from the EPS list (Annex 1); one EPS amphibian and two EPS reptiles that are all Endangered removed from Annex 2 – these species were included in Version 2 and/or 2.1 in error. See Annex 1 and Annex 2 for further information. 1. Introduction Every five years, the country nature conservation bodies (Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and NatureScot), working jointly through the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), review Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (WCA) 1981. The review will provide recommendations to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and to Ministers for the Environment in the Scottish Government and Welsh Government for changes to these schedules2. This is known as the Quinquennial Review (QQR). As part of the QQR, stakeholders are provided with the opportunity to propose changes to the species on the schedules. This Information Pack has been produced for the 7th QQR (QQR 7). It is important to note that this QQR differs from previous ones. The Information Pack explains the new selection criteria, provides a timetable, and explains the process to be used by stakeholders. Contact details of the QQR Inter-agency Group who are managing QQR 7, are listed in Section 5. In addition, the Information Pack provides details of how to complete the online survey through which stakeholders propose new species for inclusion on, or removal of existing species from Schedules 5 and 8, or propose a change to how species are protected on the schedules. -

As the economic value of these uses declined, considerable areas of heath were lost to agriculture, forestry, housing, roads, mineral working and other uses, and today, much of what is left is adjacent to built up areas, especially in Dorset. These lowland heathland fragments can be found across much of southern England on suitable soils. Much of the research on heathlands over the last twenty years has concentrated on the Dorset heaths, which are now almost all SSSIs and mostly within the Dorset Heathland SPA. While this report reflects the bias in the literature towards work in Dorset, the results have wide applicability to urban heathlands that are accessed by the surrounding urban populations for amenity and recreation whether in Dorset or elsewhere. This urban public access places considerable pressures on the heaths, for example through disturbance, wild fires, trampling, predation by domestic pets, pollution and enrichment. -

To make the checklist useful, it was necessary to update it since its last posting. The map of the Interior Highlands of North America that appears in Redfearn (1983) does not include the very southeast corner of Kansas. However, the Springfield Plateau encompasses some 88 square kilometers of this corner of the state and includes limestone and some sandstone and shale outcrops. The vegetation is typical Ozarkian flora, dominated by oak and hickory. This checklist includes liverworts and hornworts collected from Cherokee County, Kansas. Most of what is known for the area is the result of collections by R. McGregor published in 1955. The majority of his collections are deposited in the herbarium at the New York Botanical Garden (NY). This checklist only includes the region defined as the Interior Highlands of North America. This includes the Springfield Plateau, Salem Plateau, St. Francois Mountains, Boston Mountains, Arkansas Valley, Ouachita Mountains and Ozark Hills. It encompasses much of southern Missouri south of the Missouri River, southwest Illinois; most of Arkansas except the Mississippi Lowlands and the Coastal Plain, the extreme southeastern corner of Kansas, and eastern Oklahoma (Fig. -

The Red Data List of Irish Plants The risks that species face are each very different, however, as a guide to the susceptibility of a given species, an agreed set of categories has been established internationally, and these are used to determine the potential risk that a species could become extinct. These categories are:- CRITICALLY ENDANGERED or CR - Species that are declining at a fast rate, and face imminent risk of extinction. ENDANGERED or E - Species that are declining, or grow in habitats likely to be disturbed, 'developed' or facing an ongoing degradation. VULNERABLE or V - Species that are currently not endangered, but would be extremely vulnerable if their habitats are disturbed in the future. There are seven species of plant that require immediate intervention (CR) if we are to save them from joining the fate of 11 other species that are now known to be extinct in Ireland. A number of these are already extinct in the Republic, and are not therefore legally protected under the 1999 Flora Protection Act. In the list below, 188 species of plant are listed, of which 64 are flowering plants, 4 ferns, 14 mosses, 4 liverworts, 1 lichen and 2 algae. Protected=1999 Flora Protection Order; (protected)= formerly protected by 1987 Order; {protected}= formerly protected by 1980 Order; (NI)= protected in Northern Ireland only. Bulletin of the Transilvania University of Braşov Series II: Forestry • Wood Industry • Agricultural Food Engineering • Vol. 9 (58) No.1 - 2016 IMPACT OF CLEARCUTTING ON GROUND BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE) IN A NORWAY SPRUCE FOREST Jozef MACKO1 Abstract: The research was conducted in Veľká Fatra Mountains, Slovakia. Pitfall traps were installed in the forest and in the glade. Overall, 20 species of beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) were recorded. In the forest, 1532 individuals belonging to 13 species were recorded. Trechus pulpani had the highest abundance in the forest and represents almost half of all individuals. Paradoxically, on the glade, the numbers of species slightly increased, but their abundance was significantly lower. We recorded only 143 individuals belonging to 16 species. Of the forest species, only Carabus violaceus and Pterostichus unctulatus retained a dominant position, but their abundance has decreased by more than 70%. Derby Museum. 1 1) Introduction County Rare Plant Lists – or Red Data Lists – are a valuable tool to identify species of conservation concern at the local level. These are the plants we should be most concerned about protecting when they are still present, or looking out for if they seem to have declined or become extinct in the locality. All the species named in this Red Data List are native vascular plants in the area, and they either: have a national conservation status in the UK, or are rare in Derbyshire, or have exhibited a significant local decline in recent times, or have become locally extinct. The geographic area in the definition of Derbyshire used here includes: the modern administrative county of Derbyshire, the City of Derby the historic botanical recording area known as the “vice-county” of Derbyshire (VC57). -
Lowland Calcareous Grassland (Uk Bap Priority Habitat)
LOWLAND CALCAREOUS GRASSLAND (UK BAP PRIORITY HABITAT) Summary These are unimproved grasslands on base-rich soils in the southern and eastern Scottish lowlands. They consist of mixtures of grasses growing with a rich array of herbs including small base-tolerant herbs. These grasslands typically occur as small patches among mosaics with acid and neutral grasslands (including agriculturally improved grasslands), scrub and rock outcrops, and are most common on southerly aspects. Their total extent in Scotland was estimated in 2004 to be only 46 hectares. They are of high conservation value in being small patches of very concentrated high diversity within larger landscapes dominated by intensively managed farmland. They are home to some uncommon plant species and are an important food source for grazing mammals, invertebrates and birds. They are produced and maintained by grazing, which is needed to keep larger, more vigorous plants in check and thereby maintain high botanical diversity. What is it? Lowland calcareous grasslands are communities of thin, dry, base-rich mineral soils derived from rocks such as limestone, various igneous rocks and some sandstones. They are notable for being generally rich in species, including several small, low-grown herbs. Low shoots or mats of wild thyme Thymus polytrichus are invariably present and serve to distinguish the vegetation from neutral and acid grasslands. Some stands also contain similar low mats of common rockrose Helianthemum nummularium. The main sward is short and made up mainly of the grasses sheep’s fescue Festuca ovina, red fescue F. rubra, crested hair-grass Koeleria cristata, meadow oat-grass Helictotrichon pratense, quaking grass Briza media, spring sedge Carex caryophyllea and glaucous sedge C. -

Purple Milk-Vetch Astragalus Danicus Purple Milk-Vetch Is a Low-Growing Hairy Herb of the Pea Family (Fabaceae)
Species fact sheet Purple Milk-vetch Astragalus danicus Purple milk-vetch is a low-growing hairy herb of the pea family (Fabaceae). The pinnate leaves 3-7 cm in length are typical of the family, with hairy leaflets 5-12 mm in length. Bluish-purple pea-like flowers that are 15 mm long are gathered in short compact racemes that look like a compact flower head with stalks much thicker than the leaf stalk. Swollen seed pods are dark brown with obvious white hairs. Members of the pea family are known to provide a good nectar resource for pollinating insects. © Christian Koppitz under Creative Commons BY licence Lifecycle Purple milk-vetch is a perennial plant flowering mainly in June and July. Very little is known about its seed longevity, but the plant has reappeared on land cleared of coniferous plantation in the Norfolk Brecklands suggesting quite significant seed dormancy capacity. Habitat Its main habitats are species-rich short, dry and infertile calcareous grassland, on both limestone and chalk. The plant is also found on coastal sand-dunes and in the Brecks on inland calcareous sands. It appears to be physically rather than chemically restricted to calcareous soils and will grow on moderately acid sands/gravels as long as competition from other species is kept low, primarily by adequate grazing and maintenance of low soil nutrient status. In Scotland purple milk-vetch is also present on old red sandstone sea cliffs and machair grassland. Distribution Purple milk-vetch has inland populations in southern England in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, the Chilterns and on the Brecklands of Norfolk and Suffolk. -
