7th Quinquennial Review of Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) Information Pack (version 2.21) 14 May 2021 1 Version 2.2: Four reptiles and two seals removed from the EPS list (Annex 1); one EPS amphibian and two EPS reptiles that are all Endangered removed from Annex 2 – these species were included in Version 2 and/or 2.1 in error. See Annex 1 and Annex 2 for further information. 1. Introduction Every five years, the country nature conservation bodies (Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and NatureScot), working jointly through the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), review Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (WCA) 1981. The review will provide recommendations to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and to Ministers for the Environment in the Scottish Government and Welsh Government for changes to these schedules2. This is known as the Quinquennial Review (QQR). As part of the QQR, stakeholders are provided with the opportunity to propose changes to the species on the schedules. This Information Pack has been produced for the 7th QQR (QQR 7). It is important to note that this QQR differs from previous ones. The Information Pack explains the new selection criteria, provides a timetable, and explains the process to be used by stakeholders. Contact details of the QQR Inter-agency Group who are managing QQR 7, are listed in Section 5. In addition, the Information Pack provides details of how to complete the online survey through which stakeholders propose new species for inclusion on, or removal of existing species from Schedules 5 and 8, or propose a change to how species are protected on the schedules.

  • Benign Neglect Enhances Urban Habitat Heterogeneity: Responses of Vegetation and Carabid Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to the Cessation of Mowing of Park Lawns
Eur. J. Coleoptera, Carabidae, benign neglect, carabid, ground beetles, lawn, park, granivore, urban, vegetation Abstract. In this study, we investigate the changes in both vascular plant and carabid beetle assemblages in response to reducing the intensity of management of park lawns in the city of Helsinki. Three levels of mowing were applied to patches of previously managed park lawns: (1) intensively mown, (2) mown until the previous season and unmanaged since, and (3) unmanaged for ten years (benign neglect). The lawns were dominated by plants that disperse vegetatively. This treatment gradient had little or no effect on the flight ca- pability, feeding type or body-size of carabid beetles. However, there was an increase in species richness and the numbers of stenotopic species in the benign neglect treatment. We conclude that benign neglect of open grassland vegetation will result in higher levels of biodiversity than in more intensely managed vegetation. However, we consider it likely that the optimal strategy for maintaining urban biodiversity would be to apply a meadow management regime of mowing once or twice per year and leaving some areas of unmanaged grassland to maintain habitat heterogeneity.

The knowledge of which species are 19 filtered and at which scale is important to gain a more mechanistic understanding of urban 20 community assembly and to develop strategies to manage human impact on urban 21 ecosystems. We investigate the ecological mechanisms shaping urban community assembly, 22 taking into account changes across scales, taxa, and urban green space types. 23 Location: City of Zurich, Switzerland 24 Taxon: Carabid beetles and wild bees 1 25 Methods: We use a large species occurrence and trait dataset with a high spatial resolution to 26 assess the filtering effect of a medium-sized city on a regional pool of potential colonists.

In Norfolk, heathland is April 2004 Version 2 much more of a mosaic, with acid grassland and 17 November 2011 Version 3 bracken often being significant elements. Even more distinctive are the heaths of the Brecks which include chalk grassland and little or no heather. In East Anglia, the typical lowland acid grassland community is NVC U1, comprising sheep’s-fescue Festuca ovina, common bent Agrostis capillaris and sheep’s sorrel Rumex acetosella. Other species may include wavy hair-grass Deschampsia flexuosa, heath bedstraw Galium saxatile and tormentil Potentilla erecta. 1., CURRENT STATUS National Status In England, only a sixth of the heathland present in 1800 now remains. The UK has about 95,000 ha of lowland heathland (58,000 ha of which are in England) representing about 20% of the international total of this habitat. As with other lowland semi-natural grassland types, acid grassland underwent substantial declines in the 20th century. Although there are no figures available on the current rate of loss, it is thought to be slowing. The decline is primarily the result of under-management, specifically under-grazing and abandonment.

  • A Synthesis of Feeding Habits and Reproduction Rhythm in Italian Seed-Feeding Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae)
EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ENTOMOLOGYENTOMOLOGY ISSN (online): 1802-8829 Eur. J. Entomol. 113: 325–336, 2016 http://www.eje.cz doi: 10.14411/eje.2016.042 REVIEW A synthesis of feeding habits and reproduction rhythm in Italian seed-feeding ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) FEDERICA TALARICO 1, ANITA GIGLIO 2, ROBERTO PIZZOLOTTO 2 and PIETRO BRANDMAYR 2 1 Natural History Museum and Botanical Garden, University of Calabria, 87036 Calabria, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] 2 Department of Biology, Ecology and Earth Science (DiBEST), University of Calabria, 87036 Calabria Italy; e-mails: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Key words. Coleoptera, Carabidae, food choice, omnivorous, granivorous ground beetles Abstract. Many species of carabid beetles are important pre- and post-dispersal seed feeders of herbaceous plants. Here we summarise data from dissections, fi eld observations, rearing and “cafeteria” experiments on 55 granivorous and 188 omnivorous species that occur in Italy. We tested the hypothesis that seed feeding carabids are restricted to taxa with pronounced morphologi- cal adaptations for manipulating and crushing seeds in both the larval and adult stages. The feeding guilds of carabids were rear- ranged into the following groups: (i) strict predators with long mandibles and predaceous larvae, often depending also on non-prey food; (ii) omnivorous species with stout mandibles and larvae of a seed-eating morphotype; (iii) granivorous species, feeding only on seeds with larvae sometimes of the scarabeoid c-form type. The seed feeding carabids in the Italian fauna belong to the tribe Zabrini (Amara and Zabrus genera) and to all the Harpalinae (sub)tribes, from Anisodactylini to Ditomina.

Notiophilus aquaticus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Amara spreta Dejean, 1831 are new to fauna of Hungary. Introduction The ground beetles had always been one of the best studied beetle families in Hungary. They can be collected many different ways in large quantities as their biology and habitats are relatively well known. Despite of this there are groups whose taxonomic position is still not settled and larval stages of many taxa are unknown. The numbers of species of Carabidae in the National Parks of Hungary are summarized in Table 1. The total number of ground beetle species of Hungary is estimated and the number of Carabid species in the Tisza Valley is given. The numbers of species found in the vicinity of the National Park are also given in parentheses after the ones within the boundaries of the Park. Materials and methods This paper is based on the collection of the Departement of Ecolgy, University of Szeged, also the private collections of the authors and on literature data. We give occurence data only from the present area of Hungary, not the whole Carpathian Basin.
