Beata Kornatowska Wspomnienia głosem pisane : o autobiografiach śpiewaków Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Litteraria Polonica 16, 140-154 2012 140 | FOLIA LITTERARIA POLONICA 2 (16) 2012 Beata Kornatowska Wspomnienia głosem pisane. Dalsze powtarzalne elementy tych wspomnień to: odkrycie predyspozycji wokalnych i woli podję- cia zawodu śpiewaka, rola nauczycieli śpiewu i mentorów (najczęściej dyrygen- tów), największe sukcesy i zdobywanie kolejnych szczytów — scen kluczowych dla świata muzycznego, pamiętne wpadki, kryzysy wokalne, podszyte rywali- zacją relacje z kolegami, ciągłe podleganie ocenie publiczności, krytyków i dy- rygentów, myśli o konieczności zakończenia kariery, refleksje na temat doboru repertuaru, wykonawstwa i — generalnie — muzyki. Wspomnienia”)3 i Dietricha Fischer-Dies- kaua Zeit eines Lebens.

The fact that he did not can undoubtedly be explained by the circumstances of Irish musical life at the period: in bleak contrast to Britain, not only were good choirs few and far between, but there was little evidence of interest in choral music throughout the country at large.

224 CATALAN REVIEW Finally, l would like to note the exhibition Cmnos (Centre d'Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona) dedicated to Pere Formiguera (Barcelona, 1952). This exhibition focused on photographs taken by him of some thirty diHerent people at different stages during their life showing how they changed du ring a period of ten years (from 1991-2000). Those selected were of two adults and two children who are shown growing older through some 600 photographs. Valencia also oHered exhibitions of great interest. Above all, l would like to highlight the retrospective Ramon Goya, el pintor de las ciutats (IVAM, Valencia), and the avant-garde artist Antonio Ballester (Valencia, 19IO) (IVAM). l should not forget to mention two other exhibicions also at the IVAM: Pierre Alechinsky, the Belgian expressionist and founder member of the group Cobra, and the other, Roy Lichtenstein. In contrast, in Perpignan (Palau de Congressos Georges Pompidou), there was an important retrospective Aristides Maillol, whose sculptures were on show offering examples from all his periods, themes, formats and techniques used by this sculptor. ANNA BUTÍ (Translated by Roland Pearson) MUSIC In the area of symphonic and instrumental concerts, the prestigious Lorin Maazel conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra in mid-July (1999) as part of the summer season of the Festival de Peralada. Moving on to the Fall season, at the end of October the Barcelona and National Catalonian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Franz-Paul Decker with guest violinist Catherine Cho, interpreted a fairly surprising pro gram dedicated to Sir Edward EIgar (the emblematÏc representative of English Romantic Music) in the Auditori.

The higher or smaller instruments were named by the French "haulx-bois" or "hault- bois" which was transcribed by the Italians into oboe which name is now used in English, German and Italian to distinguish the smallest instrument • In a symphony orchestra, it usually gives the pitch to the other instruments • Is it time for you to take note of your insurance needs? • We welcome the opportunity to analyze your present program and offer our professional service to provide you with intelligent, complete protection. • Conversation with Pierre Boulez - Paris
CONVERSATION WITH PIERRE BOULEZ - PARIS. JUNE 12th 2006. We began by reminiscing about the PIERROT LUNAIRE performance we did together at the Roundhouse with members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the seventies. (Near the beginning of our conversation his Secretary interrupted with the news of the death of Gyorgy Ligeti – my last visit to IRCAM had been to record Ligeti’s Aventures/Nouvelles Aventures with PB and the Ensemble Intercontemporain, with the composer present) JM. I’ve recently visited the Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna, where I listened to the recording of your conversation with Theodor Adorno, in 1965, in which you compared Schoenberg’s 1940 recording of PIERROT LUNAIRE with Erika Stiedry- Wagner, with your own ‘recent’ disc with Helga Pilarcyck. I also looked at the transcript of the interview in the publication ‘Musik Concepte: Schoenberg und der Sprechgesang’. P.B. That was long ago! J.M. From today’s perspective: has your view of the work changed since then? What, if any, has been the effect of conducting more opera, Wagner in particular? Did this perhaps give a more Germanic slant to the piece? Has your view of the sprech-stimme changed over the years? Christine Schäfer is very different from Pilarcyck. Do you see the work as Expressionist, or do you prefer a lighter cabaret style? What would be your ideal voice/interpretation? P.B. The Wagner was very interesting – I did it because they asked me to do it. No it did not really alter my view of Pierrot or anything else, but today’s way of doing Pierrot is now different – much less exaggerated and emphatic ( less ‘Expressionist’) There are a number of different ways it can be approached: poetic, dramatic, sarcastic, and humorous.
