  • Biological Diversity Status of Fish Genetic Resources at Tanguar Haor Wetland in Bangladesh
BMJ Vol 5 Issue 1 ISSN 2519-5972 193 Biological Diversity Status of Fish Genetic Resources at Tanguar Haor Wetland in Bangladesh Md. Gulam Hussain* Abstract Tanguar haor has been declared as an Ecologically Critical Area and a Ramsar site - wetland of international importance by the Government of Bangladesh due to recent gradual alteration of haor ecosystem habitat and over exploitation of natural resources including fish genetic resources. Present winter season study was conducted to assess the effect of dry season on the overall fisheries resources and biological diversity of existing fish species in the wetland ecosystem of the haor. In this study, Focused Group Discussion (FGD) and questionnaire surveys of different stakeholders such as Key Informant Interview (KII); Personal Interview (PI); Household Survey (HS) and spot visit to fish landing centers/ local fish markets were carried out within Tanguar haor area covering two Upazilas viz. Tahirpur and Dharmapasha of Sunamganj district, Sylhet. The existing fisheries resources and status of fish biological diversity of the wetland based on such consultations, discussion and intervention have been assessed. From this study, it has been revealed that there are only 58 fish species were captured among 141 species (as reported earlier) by the local fishermen during that winter season, among those numbers 16 fish (28%) were identified as Commonly Available Species (CAS), 18 fish (31.08%) were as Moderately Available Species (MAS), 12 fish (20.68%) were as Less Available Species (LAS) and 12 fish (20.68%) were as Rarely Available Species (RAS). Both LAS and RAS can be categorized as vulnerable species; those are on the line to be endangered within a few years of time.

  • Inventory of LGED Road Network, March 2005, Bangladesh
The Chief Engineer Local Government Engineering Department PREFACE It is a matter of satisfaction that LGED Road Database has been published through compilation of data that represent all relevant information of rural road network of the country in a structured manner. The Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Management Unit of LGED (former Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Cell) took up the initiative to create a road inventory database in mid nineties to register all of its road assets country-wide with the help of customized software called, Road and Structure Database Management System. The said database was designed to accommodate all relevant information on the road network sequentially and the system was upgraded from time to time to cater the growing needs. In general, the purpose of this database is to use it in planning and management of LGED's rural road network by providing detailed information on roads and structures. In particular, from maintenance point of view this helps to draw up comprehensive maintenance program including rational allocation of fund based on various parameters and physical condition of the road network. According to recent road re-classification, LGED is responsible for construction, development and maintenance of three classes of roads, which has been named as Upazila Road, Union Road and Village Road (category A & B) in association with Local Government Institution. The basic information about these roads like, road name, road type, length, surface type, condition, structure number with span, existing gaps with length, etc. has been made available in the road inventory. Side by side, corresponding spatial data are also provided in the road map comprising this document.

  • Groundwater Resources in the Hard to Reach Areas of Bangladesh: Constraints for Drinking Water Supply and Strategies for Sustainable Use
European Water 50: 43-57, 2015. © 2015 E.W. Publications Groundwater resources in the hard to reach areas of Bangladesh: Constraints for drinking water supply and strategies for sustainable use M. Shahjahan Mondal Institute of Water and Flood Management, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: An assessment is made on the current groundwater use and further development potential in the hard to reach (HtR) areas of Bangladesh following a combination of secondary literature review and synthesis of primary information gathered from the fields. Also, primary analyses of groundwater quality, levels, recharge and use were done using secondary data. The findings reveal that the hydrogeology of the HtR areas is generally complex and highly variable except for the char areas of the Jamuna River. Groundwater mining is evident in both the high barind and hilly areas. There are also groundwater quality problems in both these areas. In contrast, recharge is not a constraint and there is no firm evidence of groundwater mining in the HtR areas of coasts, haors and chars. However, groundwater quality, particularly arsenic and salinity, appears to be a major concern. In addition, lateral intrusion of saline surface water due to sea level rise, and vertical infiltration from storm surge flooding pose a great risk to existing freshwater sources in the coasts and offshore islands. A number of drinking water supply options are currently in practice. The use and sustenance of the options are context specific and linked to technical, economic and social aspects. Multiple options are expected to continue at least in the near future in most of the HtR areas.

  • Effects of 2017 Early Flash Flooding on Agriculture in Haor Areas of Sunamganj
    J. Environ. Sci. & Natural Resources, 12(1&2): 117-125, 2019 ISSN 1999-7361 Effects of 2017 Early Flash Flooding on Agriculture in Haor Areas of Sunamganj S. Mondal, L. Akter, H. J. Hiya and M. A. Farukh* Department of Environmental Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh *Corresponding email: [email protected] Abstract The Sunamganj district is covered by major Haor systems in the north-eastern region of Bangladesh. Flash flood is the most commonly occurring water related disaster in the Haor areas. During the flash flood it is very common that people lost their primary agricultural productions which are the only source of their livelihood. The present study focuses on the effects of 2017 early flash flooding on rice and fish production of Sunamganj Haor areas. The flood caused enormous damage to agriculture such as rice especially Boro rice and fish production on which the Haor dwellers rely upon for their livelihood. The total affected land of Boro rice cultivation in Haors of Sunamganj was 149,224 hectare and the total amount of damaged rice was 393,855 metric ton (MT). The total number of affected farmers was 315,084. The early flash flood also affects the quality of Haor water which caused the death of fishes. The total amount of damaged fish was 49.75 MT and the loss was 158.70 lakh taka. The total number of affected fishermen was 44,445. This findings could be very useful for the environmental scientists to predict the probable future effects on agricultural production due to early flash flood events in Sunamganj Haors areas.
